Status: offline 		Caffeine has the opposite effect on many children---Ritalin IS a stimulant, yanno!  :)  Sugar, on the other hand, is NOT.  It just hits the bloodstream and is processed more quickly than other foods.  Also, I blame something in the modern kids' chemistry.  I had choccies and candy when I was young, we all did, but we were not shrieking maniacs.

Status: offline 		Jeffy...i have to keep an eye on the LoudOnes sugar intake. He turns into a turbo charged monster. And any time he has had caffeine (ie soda) he has been a real RunAmoker

Yeah that's not the kids' chemistry. That's them parents who are simply throwing their kids into day care, then paying them (at best) half a mind the rest of the time. You know, normal loving caring parents who don't actually have a clue how to discipline...

Whoops, was I going on a rant there?

ETA: This is coming from a hyper Ritalin chugging kid who learned self control just to avoid that foul tasting stuff!! And a steady parent helped too...

Status: offline 		Sugar didn't hype my hyper-hyper one up... coffee slowed two down (A teaspoon on doctor's order's) but preservatives... omg... hold on to the roof because it is going to fly!

Status: offline 		Ya know. . . this is amusing.  We (myself, the other half and Butterhead) just got back from lunch out with a friend.  We were at the restaurant over an hour.  Right before we left, he commented that it was really nice that he was able to sit there and talk to both of us.  I asked him to elaborate. . . apparently it is a rarity that A) a short-person was not sitting there screaming to beat the band and disrupting the coversation or B) that one or the other was not having to take the short-person outside because they were screaming to beat the band.  He stated that she was very well behaved. 

I responded with, "I would have had my lunch boxed and taken her home if she was not behaving."

And, BTW, she does get chocolates and other sweets. So I really doubt that it is something new in the food or the kids' chemistry that causes them to act like a "shrieking maniac."  Not that Butterhead never acts like a maniac.

Status: offline 		I'm not a child not pysically anyway, but coffe makes me sleepy. Unless it's real hard core shit that's been boiled and cooked to death all day I often have a baby bottle of coffe or hot chocolate before I want a nap. It just makes me feel full and sleepy.

Sugar never made me hyper either, as a kid or as an adult, but the manic depression and the ADHD sure will. Stimulate my mania or my ADHD and dear good lord get out of my way I am like a whirl wind.

i buy the sugar free juice..so it is a complex carb as opposed to a refined carb. I should have stated that

Status: offline 		I don't think Shad was picking on you, Holly!   Just the many many many badly behaved hellspawn that are never given anything like a limit or a boundary...

It's sad that so many kids have allergies and such.  I really do believe that more kids have sensitivities, it's not just that there is better diagnosis.  My young cousin Ryan has the peanut allergy BAD---and it was discovered when he was still in a high chair!  His grandparents brought Chinese food over, and the FUMES from the peanut oil set him off!  He's about 9 now, and his parents are working on keeping him aware, instead of fearful & paranoid. 

Additives---when I was in grad school the first time (mid 80's) we saw this video of INSANEhyper kids, the kind where you say, dang, how do they climb vertical walls? and their parents were testing that no red dyes diet.  It worked for lots of them, but I will never forget that little boy tearing a room apart like he was on some kind of reeeeely bad drugs....
