Not knowing where you presently live may make my post here a moot point.
The school district I lived in often times closed school for similar conditions and called it a Snow Day. I, too, thought it was rather dumb but I only lived a mile or so from the building so given those conditions, I could have easily walked. So too could have many other students. However, 56% of the student body lived five to 15 miles from the schools in the district, in places that were sometimes 1000' above the level where I lived. It was their bad weather which ended up being the deciding factor, not the weather over the school buildings themselves. Many times those conditions might have been okay for the school buses to make it through, if only the local highway department could get equipment out early enough to clear it.
There are lots of factors that can cause school closures which aren't readily apparent. I hated walking to the school only to find the doors locked and a hastily scribbled note indicating "Snow Day." Had I known that ahead of time, I could have saved myself from falling on my ass many, many times.

Nothing against america, don't get me wrong...but as I said...your healthcaresystem sounds scary to me after what I read and hear at times
