Mistress asked me to look at this thread as I use them all the time when with her.  To clarify, first I have some questions for you, are you talking about cock rings for the penis only, or for the penis and scrotum?  Are they metal or rubber?  If rubber, do they have beads in them?

Your response to these questions would all determine how I would answer your question.  I wear a stainless steel cock & ball ring all day long and very often all night long as well (nearly 24/7 you might say).  I also use various kinds of o-rings during play and intercourse with Mistress to increase my sensitivity with the added benefit that it keeps my foreskin retracted (I'm uncut) and also the ever popular reason that they do help maintain firmer erections.  At 49-1/2, the equipment doesn't work quite the same as when I was 17, which in some ways really isn't such a bad thing.  

I'll say that with some of the cock rings that restrict the flow of blood, trapping it inside and engorging the penis, I've fallen asleep afterward and woken up the next morning still wearing them with no ill effects at all. LOL!  So in part, if you can wear them without loss of sensation or are able to lose your erection while wearing them (some are far more stretchy while others are much less pliable, being a lot more restrictive), I'd not worry about how long you wear them.  Just listen to what your penis is telling you in general would be my advice.  The ones with hard beads or "pearls" inside them are the ones that are the most restrictive in my experience and are the ones I'd be the most cautious about wearing for extended lengths of time; more than an hour or whenever you feel your penis starts to hurt or lose sensation as a result.  I'd also generally avoid wearing metal cockrings around the base of the penis alone as clearly those won't stretch at all.
