"Women hedge bets by banking their eggs"
  "As more prospective mothers freeze their genes, debate expands"

" As the number of women delaying motherhood continues to rise, many fertility clinics are starting to offer a new service that allows them to freeze some of their eggs to buy more time on their biological clocks.

At least 138 clinics are freezing and banking eggs -- more than double the number three years ago, according to one count. Hundreds of women have frozen their eggs so far, and the numbers are increasing dramatically, experts say.

"I think we're sitting at that tipping point between technology that is quasi-experimental and tipping over into fairly widespread use," said David A. Grainger, president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, which represents fertility clinics. "It's one of the most exciting areas in our field right now."

The popularity of egg-freezing is driven by advances that have boosted the chances of having a baby using thawed eggs and intensifying demand from childless women in their 30s. But the trend has sparked intense debate about whether the technology is ready for wider use and whether society is ready for its impact."

New idea, why not have children when you are boiologically suppose to, like in your 20s and 30s, instead of in your 40s and 50s; it may be the new 'in' thing, but, it causes more problems, ie - birth defects, difficulty in pregnancy and childbirth. IVF, etc should be used with couples that are of child bearing age that have not been able to concieve by natural means, not people who decide at the end of their childbearing [physiological] years, that they want a baby. Thier is a reason that its called a 'biological time clock' its true. When I hit 30, thats it, no more babies, its not safe and its not practcial; I want to enjoy those years with my parnter, not, be going trough IVF because we waited to long.

{I do have a small child, I gave birth just before I turned 20, and do plan on having a few more before I hit 30, so I am not being hypocrytical}

Well, I think having a child in your 30's is okay my mom had me when she was 32, the risk at that age is the same for when you are 20. The risk increases when you hit 35 or older. I know the new 'in' thing is to live your life and have a career then have children but my parents were in thier 30's when I was born and they didn't have the energy to play with me like younger parents can. My husband was raised by his grandparents which means they were 50 ish when he was born. It doesn't make anything better when you are older and having kids it just means your children will be younger when you eventually pass on, and that isn't good. I think all these women freezing thier eggs don't look at the whole picture they just look at I can do what I want now and when I am done doing what I want I can still have children. It doesn't make since to me, that is why even tho I know technically I am not ready for kids I don't use birth control because I am not going to play games with my body or my fertility.

This is a great idea.  Living debt free and independently takes years. If I were a woman I'd love to freeze my best and brightest so I can have healthy, dribbling, giggling babies once my life was not in shambles anymore.  Speaking out of ignorance has landed me in the lion's den before, so I'll just say "Biological clocks are tricky... but isn't it nice to have the option of slowing it down?"
