Are there any books on proper corset training that my Master could read about this? What size do you typically buy for a corset? What is a good first corset to get? What are some good corset makng companies that one could purchase a corset from?

Woo.

Lots of questions.

Ok, what are your goals? Do you have a waist reduction you're shooting for?

There are, but I can't for the life of me think of titles.

It's reasonable to expect a four inch reduction from your first corset. I plan to get a consistant 8 inch reduction, eventually, but I've been corseting for quite a while.

That said, you should order your corset between 4 and 6 inches smaller than your natural waist. I recomed getting a custom made corset because they just plain fit better. Talk to your corsetier about what you're going for. He/she can probably recomend a waist reduction to start with.

again, that depends largely on what you're going for. I REALLY want a corset from Wasp Creations. Good tighlacing corsets designed for waist training. Meschants, I've also heared good things about. Vollers, I've heared about as well, but I've heared some bad thigns, too.

For good corsets that aren't designed for serious waist training Gallery Serpentine has good rep as do several other companies (go to www.livejournal.com/community/corsetry they haev a list of good companies in their community info)

If you can sew, you can also have a go at making your own. There are some really good patterns done by Laughing Moon, and they do sell kits.

I'm currently making myself a corset. I've...shrunk out of my good one. (20lbs lost woohoo!) I used the duct-tape method....wrap yourself in duct tape, cut it off,and reduce it by the waist reduction you want.

See the link above for some good places.

One thing-- DO NOT go to victoria's secret, or freidricks, unless all you want is to look sexy. Plastic boning isn't your friend.

Also, most corsets on ebay are rather wimpy.

Look for something suitable for tightlacing, or that refers spesifically to the boning, or that is a custom peice. Find someone who has a reputaiton for good corsets.

One thing if you're going with off-the-rack (that is, made to a uniform set of measurments 28inches, or 20inches, but not to your custom measurments)--try not to go through a re-seller. Many corsetiers allow others to re-sell their stuff. It will ALWAYS be more expensive than going to the source. Try to find out who made the corset, then see if that place sells dirrect.

Too,e xpect to spend at LEAST $150 for a good peice, you can spent as much as $500 for really really lovely stuff.

That was long. I'm sorry if it was unclear. I really do recomend the livejournal community. Useful, cool people.

That is one of the best and most thorough response i have had on a reply to a thread i have started. i thank you so much for that. What is the basic want for those wanting to do corseting? ideally what size waist do most go for and does this help you to lose weight all over as well?

Thanks :) This is someting I'm very interested in, even though I don't get to corset that often.

On to the questions--
It's totally dependant on the person.

most people seem to be content with about a four inch reduction. I like more, personally, but my body type can carry a larger reduction. (I don't like the disproportionaly small waist look) Figure out what kind of silhoette you want, and see what looks good, to you.

I'd say start with a corset that has the potential to reduce 4 to 6, because if you don't like it too tight, four inches really isn't that bad. I could do that the first time I put on a corset. (My first custom was designed to be a 4 reduction, and I could close it the first day I got it. I'm squishy :) )

Too, take into account your squishyness. I think that people who start out bigger can problably lace down further (I'm not sure about this. Just speculation)

I know some people who get 12-15 inch reductions. THat takes a lot of time and 23/7 wear, though. Not something I am personally allowed to do.

Some people say wearing a corset helps you loose weight, because you can eat only smaller portions. I don't really see it as being that helpful, though. Your best bet for losing weight is changing your diet and excercising, sadly. I've lost more weight in the time I've done that than I have in all my time wearing a corset.

If you're planning on losing weight, don't outlay a lot of money on your first corset. That's the one time when I'd advocate getting a cheaper, off the rackone. I've shrunk out of my first corset and I'm incredibly sad about it.

I bought it before I'd lost weight, and it was already a bit bigger than i wanted, So I ended up with a corset that doesn't really reduce me much. I'm thinking of making some alterations to it, though, but that's risky.

Oh yeah, if you're large chested, I'd recomend and underbust or waist cincher because it is HARD to get an overbust that fits larger chests without giving you shelf-boob. THere was a corsitier that could do it, but she retired about a year ago, sadly :(

Anyway, if you have any other questions, I can do my best to answer, or dirrect you to someone who can :)

Good luck and if it's ok with your owner/partner/master/et al I would LOVE to see corset pictures :) Even if it's just of the corset. I dig them, obviously

Just be careful with what everything angelic said...

Corsets do restrict your breathing and over long periods of time (such as in the victorian days) can actually rearrange your internal organs.

as a costumer, I love corsets and the way they make the body look. It is such a beautiful image. I would recommend starting out slowly and definitely get a cheaper one your first time out.

Also, it's not terribly hard to find someone to custom-make a corset for you. I have sewn quite a lot of corsets in my day and they are not too difficult, once you get used to your corset and once your Master figures out what he likes for you, and certian fabrics or a certain color, you could look for someone to custom-make one. They take a lot of time, but custom-made ones are beautiful, will last, and can incorporate a lot of personal things into one.

Good luck! Start small...

yeah. I shoulda said that bit too. four inches really won't do much, but if you get light headed at ALL loosen the laces. If it keeps going, stop corseting. There are some people on the livejournal who have had to stop because of health problems

As with anything, moderation.

Wow. I'm impressed. Can you share tips with me? I've been sewing for a long time and corsets are HARD for me. My biggest problem is drafting the pattern so that I get the right proportions of reductions. Any tips would REALLY be appreciated.

I'm working on a linen/pleather one right now that just might work, but I'd love something to make it easier.

my Master and i are not serioulsy into corseting more for the way it looks. i do not want to get into tightlacing or heavy corseting, just maybe in the sense that i like the way the look and make the body look, i do not want anything permanent out of it. So what type of corset would be best knowing what i want?

You might want to try bustiers then, they are just as pretty, more flexible and definitely cheaper.

If you're going for the look and not the function, go for the mass commercial ones like Fredericks and Victorias Secret and your local sex shop types. Those are meant to look sexy, not be worn for long and just tighten you up a bit. Ebay is nice too.

i want the fashion of them and the function, i just am not extremely into corseting or tightlacing. i am still a little unsure, i mean what does your body look like when the corset comes off? does it look like it does when the corset is on? The last two questions are in regard to actual corseting training and overtime what happens to your bodies appearance.

I'd second the recomendation for Fredricks, then. They -are- boned, just not very heavily. If you're a fairly skinny person, you'll get the same effect I get in a corset--the nice curves.

Many of the sites I recomended have not-for-tightlacing corsets. Four inch reduction isn't really considered tightlacing, honestly.

I've talked to a lot of people about corseting. I have yet to hear from someone who has had their body seriously changed by them. Most people say that when the corset comes off, they gradually get back to their normal measurments. I know that there are bodily effects but I think they're mostly invisible. I don't know anyone who's appearance has been changed by corseting when non-corseted/

With me, I pretty much go right back to them, but then, I tend to unlace slowly, if I'm corseted more than 4 inches.

Many of the "corsets" shown on ebay have steel boning, but don't do tightlacing. My first one was off there. I spent $30 and it didn't really reduce my waist, it just made me look all curvy. I'd definatly recomend something like that, if you're going for the look.

You should be able to get something that will look good for $50 or under.

if you want information on waist training Romantasy.com has a good section on it. I am attemtping to go from a 26 inch waist to a 22 which is only 4 inches. I do know some that have gone farther as much as 8 inches but to date that is the most I have personal knowledge of.

I purchase most of My corsets from http://www.corsetmaker.com.
She makes all of her corsets custom to your measurements. They are really durable and highly recommended for tight lacing.
