First off you need to look for high quality whips at places besides Tack Shops.

A few resources for both the DIY and for buying a good one when you realize just how much work it is.

Vitcor Tella
Midnight Blues
Mike Murphy
Peter Jack

Take a look at the Australian Plaiters guild (guild may not be the right word)

Archer, do you carry any singletails from these whipmakers?

WarVet, I don't know where in California you live but if you are near San Francisco there will be a singletail whip making class this Friday. You can read more about it

here.

The best place for you to start is by picking up a copy of the Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding by Bruce Grant. This is the bible of leather braiding. If you only get one book on the subject, get this one.

Once you have the basics down, you can move on to whip-specific work. How to Make Whips by Ron Edwards and then Whips and Whipmaking by the Master, David W. Morgan.

No Fire I don't carry any singletails or really any resale items.
But I have seen the work from those people, and have enough faith in their work to recomend them. I've met both Mike Murphy and Victor Tella in person and my take on them both is that they are honest and skilled at what they do.

Bullwhips are only too expensive until you try to make your own, then the prices seem very reasonable, LOL.

I make a lot of toys but I get my personal whips made by Brad Larson in Vancouver. If you want to make a whip for the experience of it the already suggested books are a good start. If you want a nice, good throwing whip, buy one from a well known whip maker, you will make many whips before you master the art.

Peter Jack sells a whip making kit;

He also has videos demonstrating the New Zealand whip cracking styles, which create the loudest sound.

I can tell you where to buy high quality whips.. but you'll probably drop over at the price (think $200 plus.). http://www.snakepitleatherworks.com/ Making your own isn't likely to satisfy you for several years. Leatherworking (especially braiding/plaiting) takes tools and practice to become proficient.

Making a good whip will ultimately take hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of time. Take a look at Coyote Whips. They're good beginner whips; easy to crack and even washable; about half the price of a good 'roo whip with similar handling.
