This is not the first time I have had this discussion (nor you, I assume). Marx believed religion to be 'the opiate of the masses.' Another famous quote (the author of which escapes me) held that 'God is dead.' In times such as these, the latter seems more pertinent. What does religion matter to me? This girl, as a student of history, and one who was raised dogmatically religious but has since shrugged her coat of religiousity, cannot decide. Is religion something humans created as a source of comfort in a world otherwise too complex to even understand? Or was the universe really created by a omnipresent being? I surely cannot say. I do hope that humans are not the ultimate being; the mistakes we make, the things we fight over (land, oil, etc), what we destroy, all seems insignificant. I hope there is someone, something greater than we, or else, what is there to aspire to? I suppose I am agnostic. I believe there is something out there that is greater than we are, is it God, or Allah, Buddha or the Ninja Turtles, I do not know. But it is something. To me, I, of course, will respect and honor my Master's convictions. If my study and conversion to a religion will help me to better understand and serve Him, then let it be so!
