Hi ya'll,

I'm home alone this week and in years past, while Mr. Man is on military duty, I've done creative things such as painted a room in the house, bought a new cat, and other radical things that either were praised or um... not. Don't ask about the cat!

Anyway, I'm more limited in my adventuring on my own now, but I still have these ideas that pop into my mind. One of the things that Mr. has spoken of more than once may seem simple to the rest of you but is a task for me and one that as usual I'm overthinking.

He would like a new bed cover. It can be a quilt or a comforter, not the older style bed spread. His particular rules in this category include the following, "No Pink! NO PINK!!" and also a few other smaller notations. He doesn't care for flowery, female looking rooms. The decor doesn't have to be golf or fishing, hunting or other such specifics that might inspire gender stereotyped reaction screaming "male!". The only other request he has, and mind you requests are very very very close to commands, is that the final choice is darker so it won't show age or stains too quickly and that it is comfortable. When they're crossed, or broken, the option presented better be d*** good for changing from what he requested to some other option.

One of our favorite websites for shopping is Overstock, although I have to be careful that I don't wait too long before Christmas for shopping for gifts there. Since I'm awake early, alone, and surfing a bit till I can rest some more, I started a search for ideas for this request of Himself, to order and hopefully receive before his return home, and of course order the right choice so that he's not grimacing, growling, god forbid lecturing or downright angry!

It seems like this would be an easy task. It doesn't feel easy at the moment. It also seems like it is a little more lighthearted in thought then some of the other categories of comment, so if you're up to it, or just want to poke a note in cmail, I'm all for it. I can't tell if tiny blue floral sprays on an old fashioned quilt would count as flowery. It's really hard to think like a man!

Goodmorning Karynn
I'm sending you a link to the bedding I bought, it is the most scrumptious fabric imaginable.

http://www.thecompanystore.com/parent.asp?product=CQ67x%5F3&dept%5Fid=3400

I bought a variety of the 'solids' , I can layer using any or all of the colors: light blue, pale green, pale lavender, pale yellow. I love the way I can change things out by just removing a coverlet or adding a different colored pillow sham. The fabric really is awesome, it is very heavy in weight but thin in texture. The more it is washed the softer it becomes.
BTW I hope you're doing well on this early Sunday morning!

Karyn:  I too have a man who hates pink, flowers or anything girlie .. so I use texture and color.. currently we are going through a steel grey ( grey is the new black you know ) with blue accents. We have done the contrasting blue on brown and visa versa.. I tend toward stripes with solids.  I always buy sateen cotton sheets because they FEEL like higher thred count . Find a color pallate you like.. red and black when done right can be stunning.. so can a black and white room..  I will admit to being a bit of a linens fetishist.. I love having options.. towels that carry the color into the bathroom, co ordinating drapes.. He sometimes says.. you need a new pair of jeans.. ooooooo I know but sheets where on sale this week..lol.. he just sighes.. and moves on.

For inspiration I look at high end catologs and the like and then take that and go to places I shop at even on line..  So I took a boo at overstock they have some nice stuff.. so find a color pallate you enjoy and work from there.

Thank you Camille,

The note, and warm wishes, touched me, and the link for your preference regarding the OP also is very helpful. I'm awake! That seems to be a good starting point for the day. I hope yours goes well and you're blessed.

Sylverdawn,

Your response also was very welcome. I have a feeling this anti-pink, anti-floral theme would be something many Gorean men would identify with and say something like, "You gotta problem with dat?" I didn't know grey was the new black. I thought PINK was the new black. Hahahaha.

Much obliged...

Greetings Karynn,

My girl wanted you to see this and begged I post it for you http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=207273&CategoryID=22748&LinkType=EverGreen

My girl also said, that if you cannot see the zoomed image very well, they are not florals, but leaves. My girl also said that she hopes that you find it pleasing. As an aside, ameenah is doing much better now that she is on a shorter leash.

Orion

Tal Orion,

I am grateful for the offering she's made as far as service, searching this and asking you to share here. It's a treasured bit of service, more than might seem realistic, as it is something more challenging then it first seems.

K

p,s, I'm glad things are going well with you and ameenah, and I'm thankful for your willingness to interject in this post.

Karyn,

I just ordered off E-bay some more Fiestaware plates, and one of them is pink.  We are having a Gathering here in a couple of weeks, Brule said, I trust you will NOT be giving any of them that "pink" plate will you.   I didn't point out it's not really pink it's rose, thinking he would NOT appreciate the slight difference in color.  I just assured him no man will be served his food on a pink plate.

Somehow the men coming well, honestly can't see any one of them liking it.   I'll stick to the manly colors, I'm even thinking of using Caste colors when I can.

~laughs merrily~

Tartan is always classy and a classic. It shows little wear and tear and um staining  (for the squirters out there).

Liz,

I'm going to be completely female for a moment and oggle with joyful wishings bordering on jealousy! I wish I could attend. I would love to see a layout with Caste colors. I'm not sure Pink is a Caste color for any of the Castes, and surely none of the Men! But to see a table decorated for such a gathering in the way you've described, could you snap a picture and see if you can send it my way? Please?

Karyn,

Not a problem, I'm quite sure there will be a lot pictures taken.  And wish you could be here as well.

Hi Karyn,

Okay this may sound kinda sappy, but is he the type of Man to keep old clothes that he loves because he doesn't want to throw them out? Are you?  Do you have clothes and such that are memories etc you wish to keep, Maybe it would be cool to create a quilt that incorporates all of this.

While this isn't really a help to your immediate issue, You could always get a patchwork quilt and then you can have the maly concept with the feminine one.  This way you can sneak a flower or two pattern in as abstracts  lol and it will be absorbed by the dark bold manly patterns lol.  Just a thought.  One thing you can also think about is going striped or solid and accentuating with pillows of various materials, designs and such, and complementing them perhaps with pictures on the walls and or a small quilt on the wall, this way you will have the cover you can work with and he can enjoy as a Man and still utilize your feminine instinct of making things pretty.

I have to sleep with however a t-shirt comnforter.  They are kind of hard to find now, its a comforter made out of t-shirt material.  But if you can find one they are like sleeping in heaven of your favorite t-shirt.

But what i wanted to tell you and others about mostly is the concept of t-shirt quilts.

These people make quilts out of your favorite t-shirts, old or new, or any type of cloth, you provide them and they create the quilt.    It may be a fun thing to do to sleep with, or for your boys as most boys tend to like to live in t-shirts, or even for yourself for when you are on the couch or such as they also make these as throws and such and they are ultra comfortable..

Very cool idea Angel!

I have no idea how to sew a quilt, but I may have some sentimental pieces IF he would actually give up and let me take some well loved, I mean WELL loved tees that need to be put out of their misery. The big question here is the IF thing. When he was a kid, his mother decided a lot of times that tees he chose, rock bands, tie dyes, etc. didn't fit into her notion of appropriate, so he'd send something thru the wash and never see it again. Because of that, and his personal love for old tees, I'm not allowed to ever retire his clothing, give it to good will, or otherwise. We'll see though. Maybe if I tell him it is for a quilt, he'd think twice about the giant NO!

Hey Karynn,
i went with metalics, I have a great bedspread and matching shams in deep copper, bronze, sort of a bromide color....goldish...I got it at Wally World of all places.  I love the rich colors and it is slightly decadent without being girlie.

nods, yes tell him you want to preserve them forever, because seriously, this quilt will last forever lol.  Or you can go out and buy some t-shirts you know he loves and have one made for him, without the separation anxiety aspect where he would have to choose "stfiles a grin"

This way they will forever be around him especially if they are unwearable.  You could also consider it for like a wall decoration in his office or study or guy area.   It really is a cool idea, my girlfriend's daughter had it done for her boyfriend when they went off to college, she and he use to love going to concerts and so she used those t-shirts they bought atthe concerts, she also put material from these jeans he loved lol but had to be retired etc.  It was really cool.

Greetings Karynn

Here is an idea, how about a duvet.  We moved over to this several years ago.  The perks, well we have a winter feather bed and a summer duvet and you take the cover off to wash when needed.  Also changing the cover is easy so you can have several differnent looks if you want.  I find the duvets alot more durable as they don't get that worn in look in a few cleanings.  You know the filling all moved over and lumpy looking.  This because it is washed separately and the inside only when needed.

I have seen some duvet covers that have been quilted, in fact I am thinking of something like that for myself.  Though at the moment our room is in a classical Greek/Roman inspired theme so a quilt won't work.

Good luck

Jahna

quilting is not difficult, I quilted our little ones quilt without the benefit of a sewing machine( Master still likes to show it off). this link will help you. if you want to try, best adivce is to keep it simple and tied quilts are easier to start with. sewing my little one's quilt by hand only took me a month so it wouldn't be an unreasonable project. I tend to pick star patterns for males.

I hope this is useful

take care
