ORIGINAL: slavekal Maybe I am looking at this the wrong way, but if a lady has a harem of slaves, couldn't they easily support her financially? It depends on how one views the role of the harem. Traditionally harems simply isolate women from the world for the exclusive use of one man. They were an economic drain outside of the fact that most members represented political ties to other nobles around the world. Few members of a harem would be out right slaves, most would be concubines or wives, rank more dependent on the position of her father and family and her number/gender of children than simply the lord's whim. But there is no reason that we as a community couldn't use the term differently -- we do it all the time after all changing terms that denote mental illness or criminal or no longer socially acceptable into erotic ones. So for me, when I personally use "harem" I simply mean having more than one slave at a time who exclusively serves me and no other dominant or top except as casual fun upon my permission or order. In this case, everyone must contribute to the household in some concrete fashion and not merely practicing dance or gossiping with other harem members or plotting ways to undermine another member's position.
