If the two people in question are stupid, I agree it's repugnant. If, however, there is a deeper understanding between the two, if they are mature, and know what they're doing, I see no problem. Blood / cutting terrified me but I met someone who was good at it and didn't do it just for the hell of it (ask privately if you want) and so it went from a taboo to something I understood.
If the punishment leads to destructive behavior, I agree it's repugnant. If, however, it is part of the whole and nothing more, I see no problem.
If the two are weak-minded and the M only does it to "prove" want a manly man he is, and if the s only does it to be accepted, big fat problem.
I think the difficulty in acceptance lies in the blanket OK rubber stamp for behavior that could get out of control, or not be in control in the first place. It's not something to play around with, most certainly, especially not for newbie subs / Doms or those who have or are prone to emotional issues.
As with most hot button topics, the line has to be drawn somewhere because we could "if" and "only when" ourselves to eternity; and in the meantime, someone winds up thinking abuse is ok because they get all their knowledge from the message board.
