onsight9 -> Single tail whip? (6/30/2004 3:47:37 PM)

I know that it sounds stupid, but I have no idea what it looks like. I've looked in online stores, but they don't seem to list them by that name. Could anyone tell me, I believe it looks like a crop without the leather end, just a braid of leather. Please excuse my ignorance and thanks in advance.

It doesn't sound stupid, but you could be naming a few different toys. If it's a singletail whip you're looking for, those are pretty dangerous items! Make sure you're learning from someone experienced and safe. I've heard a rule of thumb that it takes a year of practicing on inanimate objects before you should aim for flesh.

Depending on exactly the kind of item you're looking for, you can try the following search words and look at the pictures. Maybe one of them has what you want. Also try variations of spelling or numbers of words (like "dragontail" vs. "dragon's tail" or "singletail" vs. "single tail").

Words you might search for:

    Whip
    Quirt
    Singletail
    Dragontail
    Dragontongue
    Bullwhip
    Snakewhip
    Signalwhip

I can't recommend any one of the following sites more than another, but I'll list a few off the top of my head to get you started (but don't stop with these!):

I've obviously left out hundreds and hundreds of excellent online resources, and I can't even vouch for those I did include. But before you buy anything, find out from an experienced user what to look for to meet your individual needs, and how much you can expect to pay. For example, my snakewhip cost about $200 and is a very nice quality, but hardly the best out there! You don't want to spend alot of money on poor quality, or the wrong kind of whip (signal whips look alot like snakewhips but there is an important difference, and Australian bullwhips aren't the same as Texas bullwhips ... so do your research, and practice and learn from someone safe and knowledgeable!)

given your descripton (like a crop, but without the folded leather end, just a whip end) it sounds to me like you're describing a buggy whip which has a handle and a long flexible cored shaft (usually a fiberglass) and a single "tail" at the end..those run about 54 inches long or so..

then theres one that people commonly refer to as a whipsicle which is a slightly shorter version about 3034-36 inches or so...

in the area/community I am involved in, the term single tail is generally used to refer to a short (3 or 4 foot) signal whip. I purchased mine from David Morgan (davidmorgan) and can attest that it is a good quality, nicely weighted (better control) product. On the site, choose leather goods, then choose whips, and you can see pictures of signal whips on page 4.

And to echo Lady Womanji, practice, practice, practice before using on another person (did I mention practicing?) - used improperly these whips can cut to the bone.

Apply usual caveats here

When i was a kid my brother had a "bull whip", looked just like those. We learned to snap it pretty well, dam wish we still had it, had no idea back then that it had any use.[;)]

Find a whicracking enthusiasts group in your area, a sport cracking group and DO NOT tell them what you intend to use the whip for. Take lessons, hang a t-shirt about chest height and practice on it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WhipEnthusiasts/ or http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OKCWhipEnthusiasts/ will help you find sport cracking groups in your area. When you can choose one certain leaf on a tree & take that one & no other, you might be ready to work on flesh. A 3-4 foot signal whip is probably the best to begin with.

If you are going to let someone play you using a whip, check into their references, watch them play others, do they belong to a group or run a group to hone their skill, can they make the whip crack inches from their target so that all that is touching the sub is the spent energy of the whip? A whip is NOT a toy, it can do considerable damage in the wrong hands. In the right hands it can make for a delicious scene.

Your right, after researching the subject and learning what a single tail can do, It would be a while before I would use it on my pet. She showed interest in it, but she will have to get over it for a while. Thanks for all the advise.

If you and your girl go to workshops where experts are teaching single tail, go up after & ask questions, ask if the teacher would give your girl a demo

I absolutely love legree whips, but the tip on the ones at midnight blue make it hard to use. My 2 ft legree was a gift from a sub who wanted to be whipped and not marked. I got my 4 ft one in LA from Mr S. They have an online site http://www.mr-s-leather.com/shopping.cgi?edit=&button=Find&words=legree&Find.x=0&Find.y=0 I do not recommend the 4 ft one for general use, but the 2 ft one makes a great first whip. None of the legree whips are crackers, so if you're looking for the fun of breaking the sound barrier with something, try other whips.
