Ya...pretty fugly, but I love symbols, so more power to 'em...

Faramir -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 11:52:36 AM)

blechh

EmeraldSlave2 -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 1:40:45 PM)

LOL when I first saw the topic I thought you meant flagging and was like "I thought the universal code was dependent on left or right..."

As many people say they hate labels, they love "pretty" pictures :)

OddBall -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 1:56:53 PM)

Ummm, I think I prefer this symbol. http://www.castlerealm.com/library/bdsmlogo.shtml Unless there is something wrong with it? It appears to be a more decorative design. Arguably more thought out as well. Might be interesting to see both in a small window sticker style compared side by side.

nella -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 4:38:28 PM)

i like the flag, i like the BDSM symbol better. But i so love symbols i adore both.

Had been interesting to have an actual flag made and put it up high on a flag pole on natinal day. [:D]

greenie -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 7:03:34 PM)

i like it

mistoferin -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 7:05:50 PM)

Well actually the BDSM logo symbol is all encompassing. There are many Master/slave and Dominant/submissive who do not incorporate any bondage & discipline or sadomasochism in their relationships.

nella -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/9/2005 7:26:04 PM)

True. Still a nice flag though.

DomButNotForgotn -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/10/2005 2:02:49 AM)

PLEASE STOP WAVING THAT IN MY FACE!!!

Like I posted before, I favor a BDSM flag that's in the heraldic style (think state flag for Maryland) with condoms, vibrators, whips, chains and two sexy torsos in fetish wear - one male, one female!!

Come on, can SOME talented graphic designer come up with something that will bury that hideous black & red abomination??

(no offense to the designer that come up with it, but it sucks)

DomButNotForgotn -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/10/2005 2:06:43 AM)

check out the flag for Okinawa, Ryukyu kingdom - that looks like the derivation to me, and Except for the bold colors, I like the japanese version better...

In ideogram systems, the vertical line, or stripe, was established to mean power, or dominance. It is commonly used today on electronic items such as your TV, VCR, and computer equipment to mark the power button. In a psychology system, there is a symbol of three horizontal stripes arranged in close proximity that represents passive, or submissive. I have combined these symbols to represent our community's foundation of Dominance and submissiveness.

Its nice to know that the proposed flag has symbolic meaning. But I agree with the others that it isn't as pretty as I might like it to be.

Regarding the BDSM symbol being derivative of an older Okinawan flag, here is a link to look at that older flag: http://atlasgeo.span.ch/fotw/flags/jp-47-dy.html

I was told once or twice that the BDSM symbol owes more to the triskelion, which has both Celtic and also Greek roots.

Master Tallen,

The thought behind your design intrigues me, as do the basic symbols of power and submission you've used. It's a personal preference, of course, but symbols that harken to natural forms resonate more strongly with me than those that are angular and still. I'd be interested to see what would happen if you played with your idea, flexing it with curves, thinking about some of the archtypes of eternity/water, or just seeing where you find yourself as you respond to the comments you've received thus far.

Blessed be -
jocelyn

I'll throw my vote into the "needs a graphic design consultant" corner. It reminds me of... well, Tetris.

Tallen's choice of symbolism is moderately vague to me, and if it requires that much explanation, may not necessarily represent us all as he'd hope. I'm pretty sure the community can't be pigeonholed into just those who practice strict D&S. I'm also curious how he came to the conclusion that three horizontal stripres represents submission (I deal with cellphones a lot in my line of work, and to me, it represents "menu"). There's no sense that the two ideals are in any way related, and the "submissive" symbol takes up a lot more space than the "dominant". Regardless of whether you agree that they should be given equal space, visually speaking, it's a mixed signal at best...

Personally, I like this thingy, it makes sense to me - no, not all relationships incorporate B&D or S&M, but the community on a whole embraces and accepts these values. I don't have a handy ship to raise colors from, but each to their own - if someone wants to put it on a flag, w00t.

EmeraldSlave2 -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/10/2005 6:32:44 PM)

Personally I just identify with the leather pride flag, I think it's simple, elegant and "leather" is a term I get warm and fuzzy over.

Fidelity -> RE: Master/slave, Dom/sub Flag (8/10/2005 8:33:43 PM)

It shows a disturbing lack of style and imagination.

Is not a symbol supposed to reflect those it symbolizes?

Master Tallen is not trying to pigeonhole the entire fetish community. He has created a symbol that will hopefully be embraced by those who DO practice M/s~D/s. Think of it as a state flag. All states fly the USA flag but each state also has a specific symbolic flag.

There are many, many symbolic flags for other 'special interest groups' in our fetish communty:
Leather Girl/Girl Pride: http://www.lifestylesewing.com/images/flaggirlpride.gif
Leather Boy/Boy Pride: http://www.leatherboy.org/
Bears: http://resourcesforbears.com/clipart/pix/flag03.gif

There is flag for Ageplay, drag queens, uniform fetish, leather cowboys, rubber fetish etc etc. Some are here: http://www.thetwilightguard.org/tggallery.html

A new flag for Bootblacks is being unveiled in October at the International Community Bootblack Competition.

Now..back to the M/s~D/s flag. I am not impressed. Reminds me of a ships signal flag

LOL Elegant, that is exactly what I thought when I first saw it. While I am not impressed so much with the design, I do like the thought that is behind it (for those who actually read about it). Anyway, I just posted the link to it because I thought it was interesting and I have heard some commentary on it both ways. Was just wondering what the folks here thought.

Well, yes now that you speak of it, the flag does have that element of stark simplicity.

I liked the flags that you shared with us. The cowboy flag, in particular, has a nice combination of organic curves and geometric shapes.

Reminds me of... hmm... oh, man. Tallen, I love ya, but I have to...
