my poor cockerspaniel was outside for his nighttime pee and I forgot he was out on the porch waiting to come in, I am ashamed to say he waited for about 2 hours it's 35 degree's tonight, I rushed out and quickly plopped him in mommies bed and put a blankie over us, his ears are like ice, how long are they gonna take to warm back up? I also warmed up some oatmeal and fed it to him, maybe the idea of warming up from the inside out? No nastyness about forgetting to bring him in needed please, I am not a bad doggie mommy and I do not neglect him, and I feel horrible enough all by myself.

he's not shivering to much any more, but he is growling at me* he's old and cranky sometimes, but expesially so after momma picked him up and rearranged him in bed lol.

How is your dog today? Animals can lose body heat very quickly and in the past, if one of our pets has needed a bath, to help warm them back up/dry them off more quickly I've made a comfy bed between two heaters and kept rubbing them to get the circulation going properly once again.

Hope your dog is fine this morning.

MissMorrigan he's a lot warmer he's under the blanket behind me. it's 2 am here so he hasn't been out of bed yet after being put in when he got to cold at 1. His ears are warm now, his breathing has eased, he was sounding a bit ragged earlier, right at his coldest. I'm probably gonna make him cranky again by cuddling up and going to sleep with him on my chest again. he gets cranky when moved about lol.

I'm glad he's a lot better now. I don't suppose you have such a thing as a hot water bottle? Always great to have one to use in an emergency, they're wonderful wrapped in a towel so the recipient isn't burned by direct contact.

We don't actually, all though I know they're awsomely handy we looked at walmart last week but they didn't have any. I offered him some water just now, which he was happy to have and he hoped out of bed to go to his own sleeping spot in the livingroom. he has apparently had enough of my coddling lol.

I keep a towel at the door. The first thing I do is wrap mine in a towel when she comes in, dry her off and make sure that her feet are dry especially between her toes. For some reason my dog loves my hair dryer

(adores being vacuumed as well haha) so I use that on its lowest setting held at a distance from her ears. She will shake them when they feel dry, dogs with ears that hang tend to get infections so those need to be fully dry. I think the oatmeal is a great idea as long as it isn't too hot, and cuddles in bed are wonderful according to Mickey who is currently smooshed up against my back. Edit, Walmart should carry hot water bottles in the hygiene section. Look for rubber enema bags.. they are the same thing.

My old dog did too! I used to bathe her once every two weeks and blow dry her immediately afterwards, she loved it and my cats would actually get very jealous of this special attention I gave the dog. It was also amusing to see them hiss at her b/c she smelled differently altho they didn't actually want the 'evil water torture'! The cats also got bathed (not as frequently) and while they suffered the hair dryer, didn't appreciate it as much as the dog did.

Good advice regarding the enema bag, I'd forgotten that they are often sold as those.

Just as a tidbit. You can take a sock, and fill it with dry rice, adn stick it in the microwave, and it makes a wonderful puppy warmer. My chihuahua would bring me his sock every night for me to warm before he went to bed.

Those sorts of things are also what you want to do with new puppies you bring home so they dont have the night whines......they want momma heat.

Use an electric heat pad, and a blanket.Everyone`s got one,so borrow one if you don`t.They cost like ten bucks at CVS.

I love the rice in a sock idea, infact I'm going to designate one for those arthritic parts that don't seem to fit under a normal heating pad. And maybe one for the dog, and one for the cat lol.Sock heaven. Sock puppets warming in the microwave. Sock it to em. Sock on!

I have a sort-hair ,who gets pretty cold outside(and inside too).He loves being out,but is clueless about the cold.

I got him some wool sweaters and coats,that really take the edge off,and allow him to be outside in any weather.Instead of being curled up and cold,he sleeps stretched out and comfortable,inside.They also keep him cleaner.When it`s muddy outside,I have to wash him daily,and the coats help a lot.

Unless they`re heated in some way,dog houses are worth shit for keep dogs warm.Especially north of the Carolinas.But staying dry is job one,so they help.A dog door into the house ,is best.Just don`t get one that`s big enough for a man to crawl through.

however said 35 isn't cold, sparky's about 17 or 18, a younger dog, no problem, My bf's 6 or 7 year old was quite fine outside, sparky was huddled into a ball and shivering, I know it's how they keep warm but I still felt bad for him

He's fine this morning, thanks for not blasting me about forgetting he was on the porch lol.

A genuine animal hypothermia emergency involving a severely lowered core temperature would most likely addressed by heated towels or a hot water bottle. I'm not sure this constituted a hypothermia emergency. Do check the extremities for frostbite.

BTW, general safety tip. Warm towels up in a dryer, NOT an oven.
