Greetings Bountyhunter,

You wrote...
"I don't mind hearing "I did my best" as long as the next sentence
Is i am sorry i failed you and i will do better next time.... "

But then, how can one do better next time if they have
already done their best? Saying "I did my best" is an
admission that the person is just not up to the task.
In other words, it is an admission of failure, as Orion
said, since one can never do better than one's "best,"
and if that best is not good enough, then... there you go.

I wish you well,
Braveheart

Tal to the Free and property,
Greetings  NG,

Your example of wishing to become PM is faulty to the extent that the desired results are out of your control. However there are plenty of examples of men as yourself becoming leaders do to circumstance that makes their leadership skill in demand. If we encounter something beyond our current capabilities do we say Oh well I tried my best. That's conceding failure. Finding a way to succeed should be the optimal outcome. To gain the objective one uses all the tools within their control. Let's say repairing a sink. They may not have the tools or knowledge to do the project so a tool in their arsenal is to bring in a friend or hire a plumber and learn from watching. However the goal was still achieved. They could've said I don't know how so I did my best hence failure. In my opinion failure is finality. If the road is littered with unsuccessful attempts unless they quit there is no finality so  the attempts must've continued until the goal was achieved. You know why 7up was named that? because 3rd 4th 5th and 6th up didn't taste exactly right.

I wish you well,
TM4Y

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but while by definition your argument is true, there is an exception in real-world situations.  For instance, your best drawing now may be a stick figure but still your -best-.  After six months of practice you can finally detail a face, rather than making a ball for a head.  This now -becomes- your best.  Hence, doing better next time even if you already did your best this time is technically possible.

Also, note that it's 3am and my mind is out there so if I didn't make sense just tell me and I'll try to refine my thought.

Greetings,

Master's view on this is that "but i tried my best" is an answer to an unasked question. Either do, or don't do. Anything He requires is to be done. If it is not done i may be asked for an explanation (or not depending on His will). In either case "but i tried..." is not an acceptable answer.

Greetings TM4Y,

In that case, we share common ground. It follows, thus, that the question becomes one of what do you/I/others consider to be acceptable limitations on what is possible. It depends on the nature of the task at hand and the skills/knowledge of the person undertaking the task. It goes without saying that some will grant more tolerance than others.

That may be your perception and your view is always appreciated however I am a Dom that fails on occasions and I hear myself saying"I'll do better next time" hell we weren't placed on this planet perfect and failure is part of the learning process.. While I am not a fan of failure I believe one must learn by their mistakes..As always just the views of this ol' master...

A bit late in this string but here is my two cents.

I teach my girls that to try is to succeed. There is no failure in this Home, only goals not yet accomplished. To fail is to quit trying, and that is unacceptable.
"I tried my best"  applies only in the sense of continuing to improve on their best efforts, nothing less is acceptable.
We have all come up short of a goal at one point or another, this is not failure. We work harder to improve on what we do/know so that we grow closer to that goal.
In my mind we may never achieve the ultimate goal that we set, maybe we sought something that was beyond our abilities, either way in the course of trying, we have learned and grown. So though we may not achieve the goal we set, have we not succeeded in life by building on to and improving beyond what we thought was our best in the beginning?
