Damn!! I can't for the life of me think of a reason, sensible or stupid. In fact I don't think this qualifies as a stupid question at all, it is really rather profound. Or at least it seems so on a sleepless night.

To protect the head and brain during take off and flying so that they can indeed crash where they want. Also, at times they did make a few bombing runs before crashing. Plus, there WERE attempts to shoot them down.
