But there is no Church of Gor--we don't ask for money, and we aren't seeking converts (unlike some vegetarians).

I ate a vegetarian once; oddly enough she tasted like meat...

THAT, made my day.....thanks....::)

Alright then, now that I've regained my composure, I wish to thank you two gentlemen for clearing my stuffy nose and easing the sinus pressure with the hot tea nasal enema you just induced.

A couple of folks here have already given you the very best advice if you want to understand Gor:
1.  Read the books
2.  Read the posts here

However, since I feel like it, I am going to do my best to answer your question directly.

Trevelyan -

I, too, thank you.

Regards-

Greetings blushes and Rough,

I'm hoping that Trevelyan's post answered many of the questions that you and Rough had. The concept of extreme/moderate doesn't fit in the Gorean paradigm. One doesn't put on their Gorean cloak or deal with amounts like how sadistic one can be. Being Gorean is a choice about taking on a set of ideals and living one's life toward achieving those ideals. About thinking about how one lives, actually thinking about how to approach all the things we confront on a daily basis. How to live each day with honor and respect for community, that each time you do a job it's done with your best effort. To choose to live ones life dedicated to philosophies that may have been bunched together in an unusual source but are no less noble in their entirety. Choosing to take this on is not going from moderate to extreme. Choosing to live with honor, accountability and honesty (to name some of the Gorean attributes) is just a way of living. The reason it ties into bdsm is because we also believe in the order of nature as Trevelyan pointed out. Within that context Goreans see the man as the leader and there are differences to be appreciated between the sexes that accept the idea that some women were more fitted to the place of slave and not life as a free companion. One of the things one should understand is that ownership of a slave is not necessary to living life as a Gorean and being true to who you are and learning these philosophies. As Maahsatti said these philosophies were pulled from many different cultures and sources by the author in a way that many people had connected and expanded upon those philosophical basis. If you are sincere in your interest there is much leaning and growing that can happen. Some take only portions and so don't say they are Goreans. Others want more and willing to put in the effort to learn and study to Take that step and say I am Gorean. Now the choice is your on how much you want to change your world as it currently is.

I wish you well,
TM4Y

Actually, the Gor books themselves are interesting simply in the way the author mixed up so many differentconcepts and putthem together into a cohesive culture. The elements are, in no particular order: Neo-Tribalism; city-state sovereignty; Ancient History; pan-spermianism; heroic sagas; BDSM; psychology; defeminization; psychological warfare; espionage; cultural mores; sociology; UFO's; extraterrestrials; and a fair amount else.

What's also fascinating is how phenomenally popular these books became throughout the 1970's, and attracted a fair amount of attention both within and without the SF community.
