You're right; people do too often avoid subjects just because they're unpleasant.

I'm strongly against abortion in most cases; I associate the people with it as monsters, so it's a view that's typically not well received in a BDSM community.  :P    (It's a lot less controversial in the vanilla world.)

I'm against religion in ways.  I think it's an utterly stupid institution, but my main point against it is that it directly and unapologenically targets children with promises that make "I have candy in my van" look honest by contrast.

I'm for having some level of intelligence profenciency before one can take high office, such as for the Presidency.  Not that I'd demand everyone be a genius, but at least a decent IQ of 120+.  (Which I understand is, by definition, a good bit higher than the norm.. but I do not want normal people running something so important.)

I'd love to tax the living hell out of alcohol and tabacco, but I understand there's a backlash to prohibition-like things.  Still, perhaps methanol consumption is a natural way of dealing with drunkards.  Sorta like how people kid about taking the warning labels off of things and letting natural selection take its course.  (I'm not entirely sure if I'm against that idea.)

I'm for getting to class on time, or at least not too late, so I'll have to cut this rant of a post on controversial things short. ;)

I believe people should have to struggle and fight to earn their freedom.
I believe most people do not deserve freedom.
I believe most people will do as little as possible.
I believe that trying to make people all the same, will lead to the end of homo sapiens.
I believe that most Americans have no clue about civics, and are cheerleaders in a political party, and view it all as a game.
I believe the right to bear arms should include any and all weapons the government has.
I believe that violence and conflict are needed to keep our species alive.

There are a few of the moderate ones ;).

By the way, this is a very cool thread - I hope we all manage to remain composed lol.

I agree with MissMorrigan that all physical punishment of chilren should be outlawed (just like it's illegal to strike a person for any reason other than self-defense - I am not going into our kinky BDSM sphere here, of course). Children to be given full constitutional rights everywhere.

Banish child labour.

I believe the death penalty should be made illegal by an international treaty and that those countries that refuse to sign it should pay heavy fines as a way to fund Amnesty International (and I don't care if they're a federal state ).

I believe in the decommissioning of all nuclear weapons. Armies should be trained to act as response forces for emergency situations - and should be employed as such (see: Katrina, weather changes and foreseable consequences) rather than be sent out to the other side of the world causing death, and destruction.

I would like to see interests and lobby groups told to shut the fuck up and democracy returned to the people and their governments: hasn't anyone else had enough of seeing political decisions made in the interests of corporations? Gag!

Man, this is going to be fun. More later  .

I think the U.S. should have compulsory military service.
I think the death penalty should be instituted nationally, with the penalty being an 'eye for an eye' kind of thing.
I think the rabid pro-lifers should be made to adopt and care for the babies theyre intent on saving (and in some cases, killing to ;protect').
I think (as someone else said) that people who want to have children should be made to take classes and pass tests before they are allowed to procreate.
I think that (like someone said) that if you're living on public assistance that you should be penalized for every child you have after being qualified for that assistance.

Whilst I'm very wary of turning this interesting flow of ideas into a debate - I have to say that the above seems contradictory.

If two people have been judged suitable to become parents, then they are suitable. Why should they then be penalised for having too many children? Especially if we are to have a system of licensing which will preclude others from having any children at all - which is unworkable in itself without enforced sterilisation programmes. If a couple have to have their approved but unwanted children adopted, then who is to adopt them? We have already disallowed many couples from having children, and the remainder are up their full quota already.
