Hi Ron,

That’s a very good point, before the pill women worked but mainly in farms or cottage industries once married, or as servants for rich people when single, if they were a servant they were not allowed to have “followers” because the last thing you wanted was your servants having to stop working because they are producing ums. Factory work was fine as long as you were not married, pregnant or breast feeding, again it was single women who often became old maids to earn the very poor wages.

The pill was the biggest aid to freedom for women, as was another very unlikely product, cheap sanitary wear. Once you stop producing the yearly um you start having periods regularly, and without adequate protection it gets messy. In the Victorian times you couldn’t sit down as the protection, a folded piece of material, was that inadequate. Luckily being pregnant all the time prevented it being an issue, plus poor diets can work havoc with them, and if you are malnourished as many were and breast feeding you simply didn’t have enough nutrients to have a period, hence the best way not to get pregnant was to keep breast feeding.

Today anorexic ums are taking the chances their ovaries won’t develop and they will never have any of their own, good diets make a big difference to your body and what it can do.

In some of the poorer countries women can only work 3 weeks out of 4 because they have to go home as its impossible to work while bleeding, that is not a joke either its fact, there is an organisation the name of which I cant remember that provides free sanitary wear for women who are the sole source of income for their families so their children don’t starve when their mother cant work, or is sacked because she cant be there all the time.

There are many things we take for granted.

Cheryl

-fast question-

What the hell is a wanker? I'm assuming it isn't a superlative term for super hero.

Tal Bull,

As others might have pointed out already......wanker is an aussie term for a derogative mark to another person.  ie..He was a bloody wanker to drink and drive, must have been a bloody wanker to try and handle that shark, must have been a wanker to walk along the highway......etc....

Be well.

"A Wanker", Bull, is an English term which of course made its way to Australia and New Zealand I'm sure (probably Canada and S Africa too).

It refers to "one who masturbates" - and hence, someone who is so bereft of skills / smarts that he cannot accomplish anything properly (ie he masturbates because he cant get a woman to have proper sex with).

Thus as FrankAr says, one may describe anyone who does something stupid or is just plain stupid as a wanker, someone who cant do the job theyre meant to do as a wanker etc; but it is a derogatory term which one would rarely say to someone's face - unless of course theyre a friend and its meant semi-seriously, (in England at least), where its fine to call one's brother or male friend a stupid wanker, (as well as a bastard, bugger, shithead, or whatever else).

Yes, but did you miss or just ignore the point of the question?

Neither really.  I could have more clearly stated that you seem to be postulating a society where sufficient technology and machinery exists to allow women to perform the kinds of manual labor tasks that would previously only been performed by men, but at the same time, that level of technology and machinery has not progressed beyond a point where the men also need to use it.

It would be a very narrow historical window where a society could meet those conditions, if it existed at all.

The technology that 'lifted' women out of the hole was the pill. End of joke.

No shit. Yanno, silphium seeds are the shape we usually draw the heart symbol. Hearts aren't.

For those who don't know that tidbit, silphium seeds were contraceptive.

The plant was eventually harvested to extinction.

Hmm, close, but not spot on - the term wanker is indeed British, but it doesn't describe incompetence per se, but rather a lack of brains. Since a excessive wanking dulls the mind, generates apathy, and generally focuses a person more on sex. Or as my father quaintly put it when I was a lad "Your brains go out the eye of your dick".

Bit of a digression, perhaps, but the wanking aspect of the thread seems to have played out.

While it's obviously not the case that your brains go out your dick, there is an interesting point made by (drum roll) peepeegirl, that the preoccupation with orgasm is actually symptomatic of a culture obsessed with closure and finiteness over continuity, something that goes beyond the death cult and even to the point that we seek finite, discrete experiences, rather than continuity.

Just something worth pondering...

Health,
al-Aswad.

my understanding of "panther" is an older woman who chases younger men for sexual satisfaction. not, to use and abuse especially financially.
i did have a "fling" at being a panther and ended up hurting some very nice young men who wanted more than just sex.
i am grateful now for everyday at my master's feet.
