Leonidas -> Off-Track (9/24/2005 8:26:11 PM)

Tal Goreans,

I think that the tone and direction of this section is headed off in a way that I don't think is worth my time. I'd like to hear from the other Goreans here.

If this section turns into a running soapbox for non-Goreans to toss in their two cents about Goreans, and the bulk of the threads end up being discussions about their views about Goreans, I'm going to lose interest PDQ. I for one am not here to defend how I live to anyone, especially those who don't have a clue, but have an opinion anyway. I'm here to discuss our ways with other Goreans. I'm happy to answer questions from those outsiders who can pose a respectful question, but the way that I live needs no defending from anyone here.

My strong suggestion to the Goreans here is that we start treating opinons about us posted by outsiders as off-topic, ignoring them, and continuing on about our business. I don't post in the "Ask a Mistress" section. Nobody there wants to hear my opinion about male subbies. Maybe if some of the opinions being posted here are met with polite silence, the posters will get the message and go back to the sections where their opinions matter to someone.

I wish you well.

Well said. I will follow that lead.

And yet, the "Aristotle Politics" and "Realistic Thoughts of a Gorean Master" threads, that had almost predominantly Gorean participation, regressed into nothing but flames.

I do enjoy your posts Leonidas ... as a matter of fact I enjoy them quite a bit. I think in this instance though, the focus of your frustration, is out-of-focus. [:D]

Posted with respect ... c

Really? Which Goreans were flaming each other? I thought those two threads were pretty good, myself. At least those posts that were on topic, and by Goreans. Maybe you're confusing flaming with arguing. We argue with each other a lot. Goreans arguing with each other wasn't what I posted about here.

Point taken ... but you know there are many forums that exist exclusively for Goreans. This of course is not and never will be, one of them. One should expect differing opinions on this board.

As a generally respectful person that has at least a passing interest in Gor, it is my opinion that the heavy-handed response by Goreans to anything they do not agree with, is in large part the cause of distress on this Gorean forum.

Now, you can certainly respectfully ignore people, when you don't like what they have to say ... and so can I. I tend towards not doing that though, at least not since Middle School. [;)]

It's not really a matter of me liking what they have to say or not. It's really more a question of being able to carry on a conversation about the topic of the section. In the early days of the web, when AOL decided to open up their service to the internet, all of the lifestyle related usenet groups were overrun with born-again types telling us that we were going to hell, or otherwise sharing their well-informed critiques about how we live. Whether I liked what they had to say wasn't really at issue. What was at issue was that it got damn hard in the unmoderated groups to carry on an intelligent conversation about the lifestyle. Every thread turned to defending the lifestyle instead. I'd hate to see that happen here.

As I said in my original post, I'm here to discuss our way of life with other Goreans. If every thread turns into a debate with outsiders about what we do, rather than informed discourse among those who do what we do and so have some experience about it to share, it's just going to get tedious, like the newsgroups did. Maybe the strategy that we used there to some effect (ignoring the agitators) will work here.

Fair enough.

Speaking only for myself, I will do my level best when participating here, to stay on topic. [:D]
