Greetings Master Thomas One very important thing that she learned is that she didn't know how to breathe properly, while it may sound trivial, the inability to consistently take deep breaths kept her in a hyperventilating state which then caused her to not be able to control her own pain. She is learning from biofeedback, relaxation, yoga and meditation that she can do this and it does help. Because pain had been so intense she began holding her breath to make it stop and it became "normal" to breath that way. Am working hard on this. Another thing we are taught is to pace ourselves. Unlike traditional physical therapy we are not forced to do what our PT tells us to. We set our own baselines and proceed from there. She was not told to try the stairs, this was something she challenged herself on, but now that she has, she will need to continue it. Monday she begins desensitization therapy again. This time different then before. While she's been desensitizing several times a week over the years it wasn't enough. Her skin is so sensitive from the nerve damage that any kind of touch is more than painful. Her PT will use his hands on her right side, mostly her foot and calf for 5 minutes. She's also going to learn Tai Chi. She's the only one in her class who has asked to be taught regardless of pain. She really cannot wait. She still cannot run, or walk more than 5 minutes without stopping at one time, but her mobility is increasing. One has to want it, really really want it. She doesn't want to just survive, she's wants to live. Really live. ~smiles Something else she has learned that's quite important. Many if not all people in chronic pain dwell on what they can no longer do, they think about who they used to be, and what they use to do, they think about the "why's and why they don't have answers. For example 2 weeks ago, pre program, when she looked at her foot and leg, seen the swelling, the discoloration, felt the pain, saw the damage, felt the damage etc, she would focus on that which caused her more emotional problems (even though she keeps most of it inside), she would stress, stress causes pain, pain causes stress, it's a vicious cycle, but now... As in as she writes this, she see's all those things.. she's swollen, she's discolored, she hurts... but that is not where her focus is anymore. Instead it's on what she can do, not what she thinks she can't do. She's becoming very in tune with her body. All those meds stopped the natural production of pain relievers inside us we all possess. It was so bad, meds weren't working unless they were increased. A big obstacle still is sleep. She's being trained to reach that 7th hour because 7 hours un interupted is all we need. At the 7th hour our bodies repair. Because it takes her hours to fall asleep and because she only ever reaches 2-3 hours of sleep, she's stuck in stage 2-4 and never reaches body repair. There is so much more to change because it can be changed. Warmest wishes, ~twinkle
