good evening,

I had an interesting experience at work today.  I work in a retail enviroment, and after I thanked her for her purchase, an older woman said to me, "I wish you well".  I was in total work mode, so the comment caught me off guard.

my question is, is this phrase generally only associated with Goreans?  I've never seen/heard it used beyond these boards.  also, in the unlikely event this happens again, is there a proper response?

thank you,
lh

Greetings lighthearted,

I first heard that phrase around gamer conventions and Ren Faires.

Live well,
Orion

No, it's not just a Gorean invention. It's been part of the English language for centuries.

It is a particularly non-committal manner of saying "farewell." Which means "fare well": essentially telling someone to be successful from that time forward.

"I wish you well and so I take my leave, I Pray you know me when we meet again."

--William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616)

It appears  in a poem by Housman, published in 1896:

(excerpt)

"What thoughts at heart have you and I
We cannot stop to tell;
But dead or living, drunk or dry,
Soldier, I wish you well."

It appears in a number of songs, many recent:

Josie and the Pussycats "I Wish You Well"

I wish you well
Couldn't you tell
After all these years
I wish you well
And life in a world
That you're dreaming of
I wish you well."

Tom Cochrane "I Wish You Well"

"And in another year
The pain will disappear
And I will look back on this life
As if it were a scene
And in a little while
I'll see that distant smile returning
Just like back in the days
When we were so naive
In a film somebody made for you and me
I wish you well"

Mariah Carrey "I Wish You Well"

"But the Lord said love your enemy so just...
Take heed to the Word it's time
Check Proverbs 19:29 don't cry
I wish you well
I wish you well
I wish you well."

Joe Wilson "I Wish You Well"

There are pieces of you here
That just won't disappear
At least for another year
So I wish you well my friend
'Cause I know you won't be back again."

A variation of it also appears publicly in a Whitesnake song, "We wish you well":

(excerpt)

"We wish you well, we wish you well,
In times of trouble may your hearts be strong
We wish you well, we wish you well,
Until we meet again,
We wish you well..."

So, no, it's not unique to Gor.

I always personally liked it because it isn't imperative in tone.

If someone tells me "Be Well," especially someone I don't like, I instinctively recoil from it. It reads as a command. I always want to reply "I'll be however the hell I want to be."

"I wish you well" indicates that the speaker hopes good things for the recipient, but isn't telling him to do anything.

That last bit is just my opinion.

I wish you well!

Creedence Clearwater Revival:

Howdy, friend, beggin' your pardon,
Is there somethin' on your mind?
You've gone and sold all your belongings,
Is that something in your eye?

Well, I know you really never
Liked the way it all goes down;
Go on, Hideaway.

What's that you say?
We're all bound for the graveyard;
Oooh, I wish you well.
Think it's gonna rain,
Oh, what's the diff'rence,
Is there some way I can help?

'Cause you know, I'm gonna miss you
When you're gone, oh, Lord,
Wish I Could Hideaway

Hold on, give yourself a chance,
I can hear the leavin' train.

All aboard! Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye!
Oooh, I wish you well.
See you soon, maybe tomorrow.
You never can tell

"Cause you know, I'm gonna miss you
When you're gone, oh,
Wish I could Hideaway

Hideaway, hideaway, hideaway, hideaway.
Hideaway, hideaway,
Hideaway, hideaway.

Its very possible that this woman is from a different country where formal, courteous speech with strangers was expected. In Hungarian a standard greeting or goodbye to a stranger is "Jó napot kivánok" which means "I wish you a good day" or "I wish you well" Many of those who grew up in households speaking two languages - especially because the lady was older - learned exact translations of their native langague.  So "goodbye" is actually I wish you well.  Thats probably more than you wanted to know - thats just me and my closet full of useless information! LOL

I have to say this though.  It saddens me just a little that formal courtesy is so unnatural in this country that when it is used it is a shock to many people.  I wish that there was more of "I wish you well" and less of "get the hell out of my way"

wishing all well with every chance I get
luna

hi Luna,
your explanation makes the most sense of all to me, as she was definitely in the 60ish age range.  strangely enough, part of our job training was how to address customers that weren't teenyboppers...this was directed, of course, at the 20-somethings that work there.  basically what was said was, use your manners, complete sentences, no slang, etc.  so there may be hope yet ;)

and to everyone else,
thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
I wish you all well!
lh

One possible reply is:

"I, too, obtain in a similar modality, to be sure."

it is rather commonly used in the SCA as well... also I have had people at sci-fi and fantasy conventions use it

Just a note to all - "I wish you well" is a phrase used quite often in the United Kingdom.  I have had several people use that phrase to us at restaurants, and by some squaddies at camps.
