Hi Folks,
To paraphrase a famous quote: some people are born frugal and some people have frugality thrust upon them. I find myself in that second category.
With the price of gas going through the roof and the resulting price increases in just about everything, I was thinking it would be kind of fun and perhaps enlightening to share how we are all getting through this tough stretch.  Some people are actively looking to add a slave to their home, so a discussion of additional cost/benefit might be useful here.
In addition, I think Goreans are in general very resourceful people.  This might be a good chance to share some of those resources.
What say ye, fellow Goreans? The only way to defeat inflation is to counteract it with frugality and less consumerism.  How do you do that on a day to day basis?

I wish you well
Ygraine

Tal Yygraine,

Good question, I dunno. Different strokes for different folks, I'd guess. Some people will try to find more economical ways to do the things they do. For example food shopping, buy the largest quanties you can afford of the staples you rely on. I'm told that can really put a dent in the food bill.

Me, I tend not to do anything differently. I just do less. For example, I won't change my food shopping habits. I'll pick something else and stop spending money on that. Whatever it is, it's off the programme. Food budget comes first.

Of course, that approach has its logical denouement when there isn't anything else left that I can stop spending money on. I may get to find out what that's like real soon now.

IWYW,

Kirata

Hi Kirata,
I find myself doing less, too. I live in a smaller town without a lot of choices about places to shop. In the past that was not a problem because I could drive 35 miles or so to a bigger city and shop there. Now I don't, or I make sure I have several things to do while I am there.
I am also cutting coupons, looking for freebies, and cutting back on meat consumption, as well as dairy.  The price of milk is ridiculous.

So...does that mean Gentleman Jim still is on the grocery list?
lol

Hey Ygraine,

Lets see...the Yukon was traded in on a more economical mode of transport, the house was sold so we could live closer to work/town.

On a daily basis, instead of planning for dog shows every weekend, more circuits are hit.  (circuit=3-6 shows instead of 2).   Costco is our friend, Home Depot our favorite place to hang out as we learn how to do more things ourselves, instead of picking up the phone and perusing the yellow pages.   Thank goodness for those "dummy" books, they have em on just about everything now.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I hear talk of depression, recession, etc, I have a sudden urge to fill the garage with 50 gallon water bottles, canned goods and dry staples...impending disaster kind of stuff.

Thanks for the question,

Lisa

Greetings to everyone,

I'm not Gorean, so I hope my reply here is within bounds. Apologies if that isn't the case.

My suggestion, and something I'm looking forward to, is growing my own veggies. Tomatoes out the wazoo, zucchini, pepeprs, etc etc. Saves money plus the gardening itself is a nice reward, along with the enjoyment of showing up at your neighbors house to deliver the massive amount of veggies which might otherwise go to waste.

~PA

Edited to add - as far as milk and other things, when in season see if you can buy locally. Would be cheaper, and probably better all around for the fuel saved on delivery, etc.

Miss Ygraine,

with the costs of gas hitting $4.06 in chicago this week, we ar very thankful for our new used motorcycle that the Master bought with his 2007 taxes.  (1972 Honda cb350 for $500 off ebay) He grounded his gas guzzling van after the alternator went out and he's gone from spending nearly $150 every pay period in gasoline to $30-40 a pay period (2 weeks)

The Master is also a minimalist.  His household runs on the minimal monthly "necessities."  His one luxury is very basic cable because he is a scholar and cannot live w/o his History Channel.  LOL He does have cable internet so that this girl can run the ebay business.  He canceled one cell phone and dropped the minutes on the other to the lowest he could, prefering a small monthly fee to the extraordinary ones of a prepaid.  he has this slave grocery shop at discount markets and this girl does alot of cooking of fresh foods and very little boxed stuff unless the boxed/prepared stuff is on sale.  he keeps the temperature of the house at 69 in the winter (this girl wears a sweater!) and 74 in the summer. we use very few lights, even at night, prefering to use candles (only the ones in glass containers, never pillar candles that can be easily knocked over.  the dollar stores carry really inexpensive ones.  it has the added effect of being very pretty.

little hints for household stuff:  don't buy a bathroom cleaner, a kitchen cleaner, a window cleanser etc.  at $4 a pop you just spent $12.  There are many multipurpose cleaners that can go from bathroom to kitchen to windows and mirrors, lysol's is my favorite.  do alot of research online - vinegar is  inexpensive and when mixed with water in a spray bottle can be used to clean just about everything and used in laundry can eliminate most smells.  taking his lunch to work instead of going to the fast food option saved us alot and he quit a 2 pack a day smoking habit ($5 a pack is $70 a week) and picked up a pipe (much more aromatic smoke, less frequently, and good loose tobacco seems to be less expensive)  also, this girl switched from paper towels to zorbees, these ultra absorbant towels that are phenominal and saves a good deal of money (6 pack of paper towels $6-8 a week for a total of up to $30 a month the intial cost of zorbees is a bit high - 1.99 per xl towel on ebay + 1.99 shipping but the xl towels can be cut up.  so for around $30 you can stock up on them and never have to buy paper towels again.  if you buy them directly from the commercial you get lifetime replacements free.)  buying generics over name brands also saves up to $2 an item.  stop shopping at huge stores like walmart, start buying in bulk or at dollar stores.  you can get a bottle of generic tylenol for $1 at a dollar store in comparison to up to $6 at a walmart!

if you own your home/land growing your own fresh veggies in the summer and learning to can food can save hundreds of dollars over a year!

this slave has tons of other little ways we save.  in 6 months we have trimmed $350 at least off of our monthly budget.   Sorry this girl took up so much space, but this slave really enjoyed the challenge of coming up with ways to trim cents off here and there!  please Masters, FW, and slaves, feel free to cmail this girl if any of her other tricks can help!

the unnamed slave girl (for now)

Thank you folks for your contributions so far.
I have a few web sites I am reading lately:
the first is called Living on a Dime (google it) which has amazing amounts of information.
The best advice she gives, bottom line, is stop eating out. It costs so much! She also gives some good strategies on how to make that easier for you.  I know I have had a tendancy to just "get something quick" which has cost quite a bit of money.  A few simple ideas, like premade food or a little planning ahead helps alot.
The other is called MoneySavingMom and while she is a bit biblical she does find the good deals!
I am not a coupon clipper by choice, but it is helping a lot, especially when they are really good ones.
I am also making some tougher choices on my heating/airconditioning.  The expense for those is ugly, so we are using more fans/wearing more sweaters as the weather dictates.  Lucky for us it has not been a hot spring! A couple of years ago I got a programable thermostat which has saved 100's of dollars.
Keep 'em coming!
Ygraine

Hi ygraine,

First, I think you should win the Post Title of the Year Award. I'm still chuckling.

But second, your paraphrase omitted the middle part of your Shakespeare parody--some ACHIEVE frugality.

Why do you think I'm busting my butt expanding my orchard and gardens?????

Great topic. Thanks!

Tim

A common misreading. Goreans are, indeed, capable of long-term planning, and the best of the leaders in Norman's works practice such strategic thinking.

The world would be better off if "eating out" became more common.

Greetings YGraine,

I am just a normal person in my eyes, and live with my income on a basis of no overtime.  I make sure there is a budget and when I do the overtime I usually spend it on my young um going to the movies or ten pin bowling or just having lunch with her cousins and my sis, which I pay for with the little extra.  Or I use the overtime money for the car repair maintenance.  I have my bills set out through my basic pay, and nothing more.  If petrol goes through the roof, I am just 20 mins from work by walking there, don't rego the car and just catch the bus for a little while, simple.  I have all the adaptions that I can place in my life in moments, but I don't think that makes me fruigal, or does it.

Be well.

Frank Ar.

Hi Frank,
Not sure if that makes you frugal, but it sounds like you are a contented man, which is the best thing, in my opinion.

A treat for all of you determined to live within your means, and still drink all the coffee you want.........well, those of you in the U.S., that is.......

www.communitycoffee.com is having a special - unadvertised. If you put the Community Coffee-Fresh Canister Duo  in your cart ($9.99 for canister and coffee), (or select the same canister without the coffee, same price) then pick out 3, 1lb bags of coffee (an type, ground or whole bean, flavored or not, caffinated or non), then put in the offer code "COFFEE AT HOME" at checkout, you get the whol e shebang, plus free shipping, for the cost of the most expensive bag of coffee. my order went from $42.00 to $8.29

There are areas in which I feel "any brand will do", while in others, if I cant afford the brand I prefer, I'll just do without.  I look at the "any brand will do" practice as the means to pay for the "only this brand will do" items.

Regards-
Grace

This was actually an issue today because I just recently moved. Went from a 6 bedroom 3 bath home to a 4 bedroom one bath home. $150 cheaper to start off, but the problem was that isntead of loading up the riding lawnmower it was driven to the new house (about a mile away). Waste of gas and I made sure it was known.

The place has an acre of land and we use well water so we'll be growing vegetables and fruits. I buy meat and eggs mostly from a farmer versus the store. Can't beat a dozen eggs for a $1.

Carpooling is not only a thought but it is a must. Scheduling everything in oen trip can be a hassle sometimes but it is gallon for gallon so much cheaper.

Coupon clipping is also something I've begun practicing. The only things I refuse to be frugal on are my razors (mach3) and shave cream (gillette) as well as toilet tissue. 1 ply is not acceptable.

What we do before we go shopping is write a list of all the meals we are having during the week, we then buy the ingredients for those meals. Because we tend to fall into a routine with the food we enjoy if one of the staples comes on offer we buy enough to last a long time.

Our food bill has halved since doing that, we rarely throw food away now and we are eating a much healthier diet.

Howdy Cath,

In these high rising price days. I find that tipping the workers less money is a smart and frugal way to contribute to the problem.
