This is a bit too general to pin down.

In some parts of Gor,women were landholders and fully empowered. In other areas, they had less say.

But all in all,Gorean societies were either Patriarchies,or Republics of freeholders.

Can you be more specific?

I think that JustATop hit the nail on the head so to speak....the question about free women being part of a democracy........if in thier won town such as Tharna women were the ruling body there......but I agree with JustAtop again on the fact that you need to be more specfic

Greetings Masters,

thank you so much for your time in replying. I am sorry my question was not more specfic that is because I find it confusing. If everyone on earth embraced Gor , I was wondering what kind of government we would have?

All the Gorean Free or slaves I have met or read postings here have all been very patriotic but I was worried if Gorean philosophy went against the principles of democracy if that would make it unpatriotic? In a Republic of Free holders would they all vote?

well wishes,
kiss

My personal beliefs are that yes all free persons would be able to vote... I hesitate on the issue of slaves voting, only because they would be a scewing vote, as they would be voting however their master told them.

Hmmm, but this does present another interesting thought.... The first Gorean Political Party. What would the platform be? I can just imagine the commercials pro and con. Would we be able to generate more votes than Lyndon Larouche did while running from prison? Or would the neutered politically correct masses be to afraid to express their inner beliefs?

Just some food for thought.

Be well,
Thadius

Greetings kisshou,

Interesting question :) If the entire planet was ruled under Gorean laws and culture..I don't see slaves as having the vote. I mean...that would be akin to letting the family pet cast a ballot. Or...perhaps, the free would use their slaves to sway favor? If a slave is allowed to vote, but only those owned and only as directed...she could be quite useful to her owner in helping to pad their candidate of choice.

In reviewing the books, (or my vague rememberance of them), the planet was "ruled" by large insects, otherwise known as the Priest Kings. So, this was more along the lines of a Monarchy, in which case votes wouldn't be needed. The whole structure reminded me of the Dark Ages, with Ubars instead of Kings. There was a caste system and everyone knew where they fell...with the "Royal Family" being on top. (Royal Family=PK's)

So, in answer to your question, I personally don't feel a democracy would be observed, nor do I see slaves as having the vote, "IF" we took from the set of books that which was described. I am interested to see what others think :)

Grateful for the allowed voice,

lisa{Sea's}

The administrative class regulated things in most of the cities.

And an Ubar was more of a war leader, who was elected by the consensus of the warrior class. While they held status, it was only by the will of the free. Other cultures, such as the Torvaldslanders, had clan leaders, who held thier positions by right of arms. I don't think that any of the groups were particularly democratic-but if a ruler made things difficult enough for the people under them-they were likely to find thier head on a pike at the city gates.

In short, leadership positions were based on competence, not the tryanny of a majority. And when a majority of a people are lazy and incompetent themselves, that is exactly the sort of leadership that can be expected.

Greetings Master JustaTop,

Thank you for your view :) It did help me to see things a little differently. Just one thing still crops up though...

The PK's, since they instilled fear and ruled the planet, were they not the supreme rulers? I don't recall anyone killing a PK and using it as an example to others, (my memory is not always accurate though). Do you feel they, the PK's, were more of a religious leader then a ruler, such as a King?

Just more curiousity :o)

Best of wishes,

lisa{Sea's}

The Pk's pretty much stayed out of the affairs of men-until such time as they felt threatened by them.

The flame death surviellance for illegal weaponry was one example. Another was the razing and dissolution Or Koroba, for outright defiance of the Preist King's structure. All in all, they were pretty lenient, and left the majority of the affairs of men, to men.

To "love and kill each other,as they seem so fond of doing."

So individual gorventment was still left to social groupings at the micro level.

greetings
Gorean Society would not have democracy as we understand it. (Everyone is equal). The Cities did have a Council made up of the High Castes ie Builder, Phyisians, Scribes and Intitates. When an emergency came a Ubar was appointed as Leader and when it was over the Council was reenstated. So in a sense there were Republics.

In the Tarnsmen the head of the Black Caste tried to take the City of Ar to impose his view of democracy, he being head of the democracy but that failed.

Gor has a very structed society, castes, knowledge, etc and for the most part the Gorean viewed it as correct.

I Wish You Well

Tal and greetings all....

There are really two questions here...plus a bunch of misinformation. You have the Goreans from the books and the Goreans here on Earth.

Earth Goreans believe in all sorts of governmental types and live under a number of them. Democracies, republics, monarchies and probably even dictatorships of one type or another. We believe all of them exist. We practice the form we live in. Some slaves are allowed to vote in places where voting is allowed or required...some are not. Personally I think everyone, slave and Free should participate when you can.

As for the books....the most common form of government in the cities was an oligarchy. Rule by a small group of self-selected people. They were presided over by an Administrator. When a city went to war, the administrative council chose a warlord to temporarily rule them called an Ubar. This was the Greek model where a city at war sometimes elected or chose a Tyrant to lead them. The Tyrant or Ubar in the case of Goreans stepped down when the emergency was over. Usually. If not, there was often fighting within the city. Marlenius of Ar was the exception. A warlord, an Ubar who was so popular he kept his position. Most of the gamers easily forget that Marlenius was the exception, not the rule. Besides, they like the machoness of calling themselves Ubar of their chat channel.

Be well all....

Malkinius

The question your guys in the US need to ask is, would a Gorean Party rule the US better than George W Bush (Jnr)????? For this lil ol Koala and 'Roo loving peacefull (somwetimes) Aussie, I have to toss up between voating for "The Force" or "Gor Lifestyles" at our next Federal Elections. Anythin is better than re-electing "Jack Boot Johnny Howard, the arse kissing, boot licking of the US presidency (no mater who's in power)"

Just an obvservation. This question is a very valid one and that's why I read every responce with a lot of interest.... how quickly it got off topic and turned into a political bashing. I don't see how bashing Bush has anything to do with this person's question at all.

Thank you all for taking the time to answer. Master Malkinius gave me the answer I was looking for, though they were all quite interesting to read.

We don't like to talk much down here in Florida about voting since most of the country knows how that turns out down here.......many, many Mickey Mouse votes :)
