Status: offline 		To all you poor folks getting snow and ice.....my thoughts are with you......it's been raining all day, and it's like 40 degrees out!  The kittehs are out of cat food, so they are now eating my sliced ham for sandwiches......hey!  Gimme a break.....I hate going out in the rain on my scooter..that shit HURTS!

I remember the joys of winter driving.....the snow, the ice, the slush, the slip-sliding away, wonderful circles down the highway......hence, the relocation to Arizona!!  But one of the most surprising things about people with vehicles with automatic transmissions is that they don't realize you can DOWN SHIFT to slow down!  And to take off from a start!!!!  WTF do they think the little "2" and "1" are on the little dial? 

Ya'll drive careful, keep warm, stay inside....this too shall pass.  Hope none of you are part of the bunch without power due to the ice...been there, done that, burned the damn t-shirt for heat!

I'd always heard that it wasn't good to downshift on ice (the torque change was supposed to make you prone to skidding.)  I'll give it a try in the middle of a parking lot (away from the lights!)

I thought I was going to have to pull the seat cushion out of my bum tonight after I almost hit the curb.

Status: offline 		Thorny....combine the use of the brakes with the down shifting.....I've never had a a problem doing it on ice, but it helps knowing how to drive a manual transmission....you still have to be going pretty slow in order to safely downshift.

I've done a few "ballerina" spins on the ice......not a very good feeling at all.......the last time was in a full sized Dodge Ram pickup...was just driving along, and it was like the hand of God reached down and smacked the ass end.....I could feel it let loose, start to spin, and all I could do was hang on for the ride and hope I didn't hit anything......I didn't, but it took a good 10 minutes to pry my fingers loose from the steering wheel!  Thank goodness for the group of kids that came along and pushed me out of the ditch....it was in a storm, and I'd have been waiting for a tow truck for hours!

Don't miss the roadway acrobatics at all.......

Status: offline 		Oh, man that brings on memories.  I did a 360 with my Ford Ranger a few years ago. And surprisingly never swore or cursed.

Once upon a time I drove manuals, but got so sick of driving with them in rush hour traffic (quite the workout fer the left leg) that I surrendered to the glamour of the automatic.  I've lapsed from the sisterhood.

Status: offline 		The first time I drove the semi on snow & ice I had about 150 miles of compact to run on.  At one point a herd of cars decided that I wasn't going fast enough so got into a fairly tight line & passed me on the left.  One of them pulled back in front of me & spun out.  I had a heavy load, 90,000 + lbs, & there was no way I could do anything but watch & hope it wasn't this guy's time's-up!  He skidded across the road in front of me, overcorrected & back in front of me into the left lane, missing all the cars there, then back in front of me doing a 180, stopping facing me on the right shoulder.  Now *that* was exciting!!!
