Need advice for sex-positive newspaper column - 6/25/2008 7:13:07 PM

The paper I work on at my school is trying out a new column on the health and living page called "Risky Reads" The first few columns we did last semester were about safe sex, the need for comprehensive sexual education, and one about the new lap dance laws in South Carolina. After a disastrous attempt at a column dedicated to sex toys, where our adviser threatened to resign if we ran the story, we realized that we needed more of a helpful focus. Instead of running that particular story, we found one on the wire about female gynecological health and the importance of regular checkups.

While talking with the editor today, we decided that it would be best if the stories were written by students instead of someone who doesn't even go to our school. The problem with students writing, however, is that none of us are experts, so no advice column is possible. I brought up the idea of making our focus more sex-positive, which I explained to her as being accepting of any sexual expression our fellow humans see fit, and helping spread awareness of safe practices to keep those practices healthy. She loved the concept and added that she'd love to do an article on homosexual love/ marriage, and since one of our staff members is pregnant, she wants to write about how it's possible to be in college and have a baby.

The story we're doing this week is about how life drawing (nude models) helps form positive body-images, and nudity shouldn't be something we're ashamed of. I'm writing this week's column because every Saturday I go to the life drawing class offered by the head of the arts department.

Now, on to the question in this post...

What else should we write about? When the editor said that she wants to "come at it from all angles" of course my mind jumped to my own personal angle, which is bdsm. I thought of doing something on polyamory too, which might be more acceptable to our predominantly christian, white, horny college student readership than whips and chains, you know?

If I did do something on bdsm, I'd try to address the all players in the "scene", instead of your typical dominatrix-studded fare that overpowers the stereotype.

Your help and ideas are greatly appreciated!

Sheesh.
When *I* was a student I was an expert.
You're just not talking to the right people.

I'd suggest reading a lot of Savage Love for inspiration. That's got to be about the most sex positive column around.

you could try a "fact or fiction" approach, try and dispel myths.  that angle would work for any sex-related topic, I think.

Who has the final say on the content in your paper?  The advisor or the editor or the head of the journalism dept?  If sex toys are considered too risky I have doubts about anything Kink related being published.

Have you checked through the advice columns for men's and women's magazines?  Say "Playboy", "GQ", "Maxim", "Cosmo" and "Glamor"?  Savage Love is good as DomKen mentioned; how about LoveLine and Dr. Drew's book?  That should give you ample material for beginning research and potential stories.

You could do an article on the Sexual Power of Attorney.  The idea that you need to specify what your sexual wishes are (or will be) when you face dementia or elder care.

some thoughts that came to mind.
articles about
  • the mixed messages that occur between the genders
  • how to communicate with the opposite sex
  • that it's ok to say no and it's ok to say yes
  • the difference between fantasy and reality, and turning yourself and your partner on understanding and respecting limits (boundaries)
  • tantric
  • trust and respect in a sexual context.
  • fetishes .. she's turned on by shopping and he's turned on by (pick a sport) vs she's turned on by xxx and he's turned on by yyy

--  good one.

Do a piece on sizing up the credibility of this as well as other info.,

info with named sources are better.  describe the passionate left and right can upset the apple cart and ruin more lives then a train wreck.

I would also do a peice on suicide prevention, how to key the signs, where to point to kid to help.  the toll free 24 hour crises line, the battered womans shelter.  I would publish how PFAs work in your county, contrast that with another county- and explain how and when to get one.

Do the peices like papers, at bottem cite foot notes.  [for anyone to check your data]

...ild do a time machine piece;.   life at 30, 40,50  all the things to expect.  [PLEASE put in it that tooth lose effects the way food tastes!!!!]

In short- if every yard is tidy it makes for a lovely neighborhood.

I like the contrasting of countries, but the suicide prevention and other mental health is covered in an actual advice column we have called "ask Dr. Psych", where a psychologist at the school helps us out.

The time machine idea is a good one as well. thanks!

The staff has the ultimate say, even the editor has to defer to the majority. Technically our advisor has no say and just oversees and trains people, but she's one of the best we had and it would be a shame to lose her. I proofread the sex toys article and it wasn't just a "hey, sex toys are out there, you should try them out", it was going into way too much detail for a general audience paper. I love Dr. Drew, I can't even believe I didn't think of that, thanks for the advice!

I like that, it's a good chance to appease the "abstinence only" people by working something about safe sex in as well as opening up people's horizons about other things. thanks

If you had an advice column you'd be dealing with the students and what they wanted would go into the column.  Allow them to be anonymous and make it clear a student is the one dishing out advice.

Kids today, peer pressure?  STD's?  Get to know your own body?  Homosexuality and is it ok?  If I am gay how do I come out?  How to properly used a sex toy....you can do a story on a different one from time to time when you can't think of anything else.

The ideas are limitless.  The only limit you have is your advisor...work with him/her.

I should have put this up earlier... sigh. Forest for trees...

http://www.erotikey.com/topic.html

That's the topic list we are developing for Erotikey.  There are more than 500 topics covering a great deal of the sexual experience.  Hopefully it will give you some ideas.

I am excited for you.   Good journalism can make any topic interesting.

You see- language, attention span is morphing into fragmented semi-communication. so the real thing is getting harder to come by.

keep us posted- we love to help=particpate, etc.

Do you think I should post some of the articles I write onto the CM boards? This week I'm doing one on how nude modeling for art classes helps create positive body-images. Names of professors and such would be edited out for posting on here, of course. What do you think?
