[>:]NO eating of cuy on this thread THANK YOU! [>:]

About the allergies...my pigs lived on pine shavings, and had heaps of timothy hay. The cage got entirely changed every other day, or every day, even, if necessary.  Pig got a bath every three weeks or so.    My mom is *severely* allergic to cats, and had no trouble at all with the guinea pigs.  I have friends who have no issues with dogs or cats that can't get near a pig at all.  My best suggestion is to go to a pet shop and actually handle the pig for a bit.  Hold it up to your face, let it give you a sniff, maybe you'll get a lick with its little piggy tongue!!

<I am emo now...I miss my Pansy!>

The biggest possible drawback of the guinea pig is its short lifespan.  Six-eight years, max, rather like a big dog.   If you're really resilient and good with the whole heartbreak thing, run with it.  Fourteen years of keeping pigs, best time of my life.  Any future life partners will HAVE to like guinea pigs.  And the grey parrot, but that's another story.  I adore animals, but no creature has appealed to me the way pigs have.

I have really fallen in love with Mr. Wiggles Worth...he is so cute and friendly...he doesn't move a whole lot but I think thats b/c he was kept in a VERY small cage his entire life. (he's actually still in it...I wanted him to settle in a bit before buying him a bigger one...don't need to stress him out too much right away.) he will run when I try to pick him up...and whenever I clean his cage...he runs around in circles for ages when I first put him back in. LOL so I know he *can* run...he just doesn't much.

I generally use Carefresh for bedding...but this last time I bought Kaytee b/c it was a lot cheaper...and it really helps reduce the smell a lot. (especially with my rat...God, rat pee stinks! hehe) and my dwarf rabbit seems to love it...when I was using Carefresh he NEVER did a bunny flop inside his cage...now he's doing it constantly! [:D]

aaaaccckkkk!  i'll just have to be petless if spiders are my only chance of non-allergicness.  fuck.  i like snakes but i hear they get stinky.  thanks for the input darcyandthedark, i'm going to check out what kind of allergies my Sir has and hopefully i can find a pet that will suit him...maybe a bird or a goldfish lol.  i don't care what it is, i just love having an animal to take care of.

Hi christine - when i moved in with my Sir, i had to leave my cats and dogs behind. Sir is bad allergic - so he allowed my african grey to move in - and try to eat the house and his toes! Sir has said if he didn't know what i had given up to come to him ie the cats and dogs  - i would come home one day to parrot stew - lol.  Do some research on birds, and their care and personalities - they can be wonderful pets if you understand how they think. Beckette loves me (not in a good way) but there are ways to keep that under control, and when she isn't horny, she is a love. Not a cuddler like a dog, but she has her own unique personality and way of relating to me.   And she does a mean imitation of a whip! hehe

I also have a parakeet (budgie) and  a couple of conures - all have their own unique personalities and ways of relating to us.   very cool          [:)]

kiwisub12 -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 5:57:05 PM)

oh - and about snakes - they only get stinky if they defecate and it isn't cleaned out.   and they don't poop very often.

You might want to think about getting another gp. my ums and i used to have 2 and they were just precious together.  Made the cutest little moiking noises.

dollparts85 -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 6:32:03 PM)

I am thinking about getting another one. If I do, I'm gonna name him Pancake XD

LadyHibiscus -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 7:45:09 PM)

Well let us know, there are RULES about mixing gpigs, especially males!  They will FIGHT and believe me those front teeth are chisel sharp.

DomAviator -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 8:06:35 PM)

I would have started with something smaller like a gerbil to get comfortable but to each their own...[:D]

I used to have a Rhinkhals Cobra that would have loved one of those... LOL

christine1 -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 8:06:47 PM)

kiwi...when i was married we had an african grey.  it came with the husband and it hated my guts lol.  when i'd walk by his cage he'd fling water at me.  he was very funny in the things he'd mimick.  i'll have to keep my eyes open to what the possibilities could be.

GreedyTop -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 8:25:01 PM)

hiya Aynne!!  :D

LadyHibiscus -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 8:26:31 PM)

Gerbils and hams are cool, but they are TOO small for a grownup.  A piggen is like a cat, sits under your chin, sacks out, purrs, and demands snacks in peremptory WHEEK.  They don't call us cavyslaves for nothing...

DiurnalVampire -> RE: picture of my new guinea pig! (6/30/2008 8:31:01 PM)

piggens. just the name makes me want one
