BeachBear -> RFI: Of Collars and Colors (11/11/2005 7:19:13 AM)

Good Morning all, hope everyone is well today,

My new Domina and I have made tremendous progress in both my training, as
well as our relationship, and we wish to make a public expression that the
aforementioned relationship has gone to a new level of commitment at our
next BDSM group meeting. For reasons that are too long to go into, we cannot
enter into a formal collar at this time. Where I came from, some people in
the lifestyle recognized two submissive collars (they did not count the
utilitarian collar used for training, which carried no significance...
except that one was being trained). The collar of consideration, which was a
shade of blue (for males) or red (females). The Collar of Consideration
covered all aspects of a serious relationship up until it was superseded by
the (formal) Collar (usually black, silver, or gold).
A smaller group held that the Collar of Consideration was blue, which was
then replaced by a collar representing a higher level of commitment, that of
the training stage (here "Training" was held to be a symbolic stage, as well
as a practical one, the color used was red), finally being replaced by the
Formal Collar (see colors above).

I was hoping that some members of this fine group might be able to advise as
to what is considered appropriate for a submissive, at different stages of
the relationship, based on your understanding.

respectfully,

bear

What's appropriate is whatever you decide works in your own relationship.

Some people don't use collars at all. Some use 5, 4, 1. Some use tattoos. Some use wedding bands.

Symbols are symbols, we can make them whatever we want.

My latest thing is to give those who have served at my house two silver bands to be worn on the middle finger of the right hand. This is to match the antique door knocker that is on the huge door to our place (see attached picture - Waa...can we no longer attach pictures???).

Elle and I wear the same bands on our left hand...

I love symbols!

Update:

I suppose I should have made some attempt to reply to the OP, so here goes:

In the early days of BDSM, the world was a much more tolerant place. Slaves could walk around in their collars of various hues in the open daylight and it was easy to differentiate between the sky-blue of the Collar of Consideration and the Robin's Egg Blue of the Collar of Protection.

Unfortunately, the political climate changed for the worse, and we were driven into the dark recesses of places like The Hellfire and Paddles, where the daylight never reached. It was horrible! People kept confusing the slaves who were being "Considered" with those who were four or five months into their "Tutelage".

We all met one Thursday afternoon and decided to throw away the whole color coding scheme...so feel free to wear whatever color matches your eyes!

MistressYlwa -> RE: RFI: Of Collars and Colors (11/11/2005 9:35:22 AM)

Personally, I use black, in the beginning, as it suits me. When time has passed and I feel this is the right situation for me, I find a silver, decorative collar for my boy. One that he can wear in public. At home, the old black one is fine. lol

There is no protocol for collar colors other than mainly online and a (very) few select and private groups.
Protocol is what the couple make it.

I am extremely interested where you gained such knowledge?
Much thanks in advance and looking forward to your response.

Peace and Love

Sir; were You speaking "tongue in cheek" about these collars? Do people actually go through "Protection" to "Consideration" to "Mine"? Did i miss any stages/collars?

MrThorns -> RE: RFI: Of Collars and Colors (11/11/2005 10:13:55 AM)

The only places I have encountered this color-coding for collars are on Steel~Door.com and the book "Extreme Space"...both of which were created by Mistress Steel. (I have seen this in other publications, but they have all referenced M Steel as the source of information.)

If you choose to use colors to identify status within your relationships, hey...more power to ya, but there is no set standard for what those colors mean, other than the standards you create for yourself.

I am sorry, but that is classified information. *wink*

I am fairly certain that some people do go through those stages, with all the accompanying pomp, circumstance, and color coordinated fetish accessories. Then again, the lengths to which some people go with anything has ceased to surprise me.

Oh my yes...there is the Collar of Confusion, for those who try to make sense of real time BDSM after only experiencing online BDSM. There is the Collar of Condescension, for those subs who think that slaves are "doormats" (or for the slaves who think the subs are "players"). Then there are "Mentoring Collars", which mean that a slave is new enough to fuck once or twice, but not good enough to own. And "Training Collars" which mean that while I want you to do my dishes and mop my floors, don't unpack your bags.

I am sure there are others I am forgetting...there was a tiger-stripped one that I think meant "Collar of Cornflakes"...but, for the life of me, I can't recall exactly what that really meant.

P.S. Is there a Shopping Collar? i have many lovely things selected, and none of my Dom or Master friends will buy them for me *sigh*. i keep hearing "what does this do for Me?" LOL.

BeachBear -> RE: RFI: Of Collars and Colors (11/11/2005 12:52:13 PM)

As a Macro response, thanks to one and all. Since it's up to "us", I'm thinking some different grips for my Harley would be nice (though the fosted flakes collar would be "Greeeeaaat!". To Dark Angel, the small circle of folks that I hung around with, that were constantly on the go from Cal to AZ, but associated with my home group, APEX seemed to place significance on color. My collar has been a fairly ratted out real time training collar, but was never worn outside the house. Sometimes, when I went to a gathering with my Domme, or was loaned out as an escort to her freinds that would attend something similiar, I would wear a fairly discrete, thin collar on the inside of my regular shirt collar.

You forgot the Velcro collar, which I think made its first appearance in BDSM IRC chat rooms!

Not with pink fur.

Now, the silver leather one...absolutely.

LadySonelle -> RE: RFI: Of Collars and Colors (11/11/2005 1:00:21 PM)

In my Householding the collars are of substances as well as colours. This is in accordance with the sumptuary code of My Rule.

The first collar is a 5thin base metal kewellry chain, the Collar of Application. It is very temporary and soon replaced by the First Collar, the Collar of Consideration or Postulancy. It is a black or green collar made of nylon webbing and is not locked.
Black is for body slaves, gtreen is for distance and/or financial slaves.

The second or Year Collar is the Collar of the Novitiate or Training. It is black, brown or green leather and it is locked. It is worn for three years.

Afther the third year or when the slave proves himself worthy, the third Collar, the Collar of Chattel Slavery is bestowed. It is metal, either silver or steel and it is locked.

There has only been ONE Fourth Collar and that is of gold and bears a gold and diamond custom made lock. That is the Collar of the Life-slave, First Servitor.

Heh. Check this out, hopefully my latest find. I've been into bindi for the past year or so because I think they are elegant, unexpected, and have a lot of symbolism behind them. Lately I've been getting more into coronets and circlets.
