I care about people who are gracious enough to let me have fun topping them too much to put them at risk by being a "fucking cheapskate*.

I'd rather pay the price than risk them having to.

i guess it's all about perspective... i'm the only bottom subject to the risks of the toys i buy or build, so who cares if it breaks! [8D]

BTW, along with farm equipment stores, you can also get nice load-rated gear from stage rigging (theater) supply companies.

i've seen BDSM stores (including some of the reputable, long-established ones) selling the same junk pot-metal "panic snaps" that you find at the hardware store [>:]

The only DECENT panic snap is going to be a stainless steel one. And they don't come cheap.

90% of the plated silvery buckles out there are made of cast ZINC-which is extremely weak.

I only use solid steel wire buckles and heavy d rings on my bondage gear. And I will be looking into ways to make my own laser cut and drop forged stainless ones in the future.

If you are going to get a panic snap-look for at least cast iron, and don't get it with a stupid swivel. They are notorious for pulling out. If I was actually going to use one in suspension, I would go with the second one down in this link.

Ok, time for me to live up to my reputation as a heretic .....

I am not so quick to dismiss panic snaps. They are ok if you are talking about standing bondage, like for example againt a StAndrews cross and your cliping a set of leather cuffs to the ring bolts at the corners. In these cases the device is not load bearing.

The problem comes from the mindset of 'if its good for syanding bondage, it must be good for suspention also'.

Leatherist -> RE: Suspension rings: Why? (7/12/2008 9:02:16 AM)

Amen. And that is where I have usually used them. More as a convenience for someone going "weak in the knees" during sensation play than anything else. It's easier to be able to grab someone around the waist-then pop the snap to the hands and let them down gently.

But a full overhead things with the body up off the ground? Very very bad idea. Even ONE suspension point letting go suddenly can wrench a joint. And even if it doesn't, it can ruin the headspace for the bottom.

What the bloody hell .....

*MORE* people on CM are agreeing with me? This is just too strange

Voice of experience man. I've been doing heavy duty bondage for over a decade now.

Not one injury from hundreds of scenes during that time. I always erred on the side of caution.

And to be even more of a heretic. Nope, you do not always need to use a knot. I use them for convenince. Tucking an end under, or between coils can work the same way. You just need not to be *sloppy* laying your coils and cinches.

After all, this ain't no rodeo boy! The first one to hogtie that calf DOES not win! [:D]

I must be loosing my touch in my old age ..... back in the day I could have 100 people flaming me just by me saying 'And what do you do when the person is a switch?'

Leatherist -> RE: Suspension rings: Why? (7/12/2008 7:33:39 PM)

It's easy if you don't suffer from "I'm-so-pathetically-insecure-everyone-is-topping-from-the bottom-itis"

You ask thier Dom side for advice about torturing thier bottom side.

Then twist it 90 degrees. [:D]

Wrong context ..... It was a mailserve list for a local munch group in a city I lived in a while back. New person joined the group and anounced that their master had comanded them that they were only permited to speak with other slaves and they were forbiden to talk with masters .....

After I asked my question, the resulting flamewar was of truely monumental scope.

Well, to throw in my .02 here, I am a welder and a machinist, so I do know a thing or two about what we are talking about here.

Do you or can you make leatherwork hand tools?  If so, i am looking for a particular tool.  If interested, please PM me.

jro2020 -> RE: Suspension rings: Why? (7/16/2008 11:30:20 PM)

I wish it were as simple as An eye hook in the ceiling for me.    For one My subby is almost 6 foot tall blowing that 130 pound thing right out of the water, plus she is a chubby subby, blowing 200 right out of the water.

More importantly our apartment has radiant heat in the ceiling so no ceiling mount at all.  I need to work up a frame that is big enough to accommodate a 6 foot tall person Plus have room for me (6'3" 250b) to maneuver.  Ohh and it would be nice if could be dissasembled so I can get it through a door or two.

Also Mr. Beast is giving me a tool-gasm.
