Nikolette -> BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/13/2008 11:18:14 PM)

Hello all!

Recently I was reading some poetry to a fairly apathetic sub. It got me to wondering....

What is your favorite poem? Does it have any BDSM aspects? Did you notice this when it first caught your fancy? Or later? Or was it because of those elements that you like it so?

What is your favorite outright (or subtle, but obvious to you) BDSM themed poem?

Do you write poetry? If so, please share it with us!

One of my favorites:
What it is
By Erich Fried

It is madness
says reason
It is what it is
says love.

It is unhappiness
says caution
It is nothing but pain
says fear
It has no future
says insight
It is what it is
says love.

It is ridiculous
says pride
It is foolish
says caution
It is impossible
says experience
It is what it is
says love.

I feel like if I found someone to cat fight with, my thread may generate more interest... [:(]

It would be hard for me to claim one poem as my favorite, but this one sort of speaks to all that longing you feel for someone who set your world ablaze, and then walked out of your life.

Eighteen
Rod McKuen

I stood watching
as you crossed the street
               for the last time.
Trying hard to memorize you.
Knowing it would be important.
The way you walked,
the way you looked back over your shoulder at me.

Years later
I would hear the singing of the wind
and that day's singing would come back.
That time of going would return to me
every sun-gray day.
April or August it would be the same
        for years to come.

Man has not made the kind of bromide
that would let me sleep without your memory
or written erotically enough
to erase the excitement of just your hands.

These long years later it is worse
for I remember what it was
as well as what it might have been.

ChainedE: Ooooh, I agree. It does capture it well. I loved especially "to erase the excitement of just your hands"

Allondra -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 3:31:23 AM)

A favourite poem, and one that is often brought up when this topic is mentioned:  Shakespeare's sonnet 57.

Being your slave, what should I do but tend
Upon the hours and times of your desire?
I have no precious time at all to spend,
Nor services to do, till you require.
Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour
Whilst I, my sovereign, watch the clock for you,
Nor think the bitterness of absence sour
When you have bid your servant once adieu;
Nor dare I question with my jealous thought
Where you may be, or your affairs suppose,
But, like a sad slave, stay and think of nought
Save, where you are how happy you make those.
So true a fool is love that in your will,
Though you do anything, he thinks no ill.

stella41b -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 4:44:28 AM)

In the futile hours and moments of a day left empty
Among so much uncertainty, I feel the need to be
Held in the firm grip of your knowing mind
To be in that place I need to be, where you are all I see
To meet all your needs and each demand, and to understand
Yet I'm here cloud-gazing with answers yet to find

When the sunset brings weary colours to the evening sky
I long to catch that while, knowing both your warmth and smile
To come together with you as the hours unwind
To experience the pleasure, to feel the suffering and the pain
Where your heart and name forms my collar and chain
Yet I'm here cloud-gazing with answers yet to find

When raindrops make silvery puddles together with my tears
I need your confident hand to push me beyond my fears
So I learn to leave all what is meaningless behind
That home in your heart is it for me, my place to be?
Just a simple wish for you to look at me, and for you to see
Why I'm here cloud-gazing with answers yet to find..

DominantJenny -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 5:43:29 AM)

I'm a fan of poetry. Some I like:

may i feel said he

may i feel said he
(i'll squeal said she
just once said he)
it's fun said she

(may i touch said he
how much said she
a lot said he)
why not said she

(let's go said he
not too far said she
what's too far said he
where you are said she)

may i stay said he
(which way said she
like this said he
if you kiss said she

may i move said he
is it love said she)
if you're willing said he
(but you're killing said she

but it's life said he
but your wife said she
now said he)
ow said she

(tiptop said he
don't stop said she
oh no said he)
go slow said she

(cccome?said he
ummm said she)
you're divine!said he
(you are Mine said she)

- ee cummings
(There's more ee cummings, too, that is really good, imo. Google is your friend.)

This is one of my all-time favorites...it's the perfect flirt.

This Is Just To Say

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast.

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold.

- William Carlos Williams

And not technically poetry, but close enough to my mind:

And then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will yes. - James Joyce

Thanks for sharing this poem. It actually describes how I feel about someone that recently walked out of my life. He awakened so many things in me and really helped bring out the secret parts of me that no one I had ever been with before could understand. I wish he could've stayed....

afterforever -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 9:15:54 AM)

I love poetry, and I see elements of BDSM in lots, although I'm sure that wasn't the poet's intention. I just have a dirty mind or something I guess. I have so many favourite poems, but I'll just quote the bit of The Prophet that is on my profile, because choosing between others would take ages.

"When love beckons to you, follow him,
though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden" ~ The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran

Shakespeare's Sonnet 58 is also pretty good, but

No one matches A.C. Swinburne Here's an excerpt from  "Delores"

Cold eyelids that hide like a jewel
Hard eyes that grow soft for an hour;
The heavy white limbs, and the cruel
Red mouth like a venomous flower;
When these are gone by with their glories,
What shall rest of thee then, what remain,
O mystic and sombre Dolores,
Our Lady of Pain?
.......

There are sins it may be to discover,
There are deeds it may be to delight.
What new work wilt thou find for thy lover,
What new passions for daytime or night?
What spells that they know not a word of
Whose lives are as leaves overblown?
What tortures undreamt of, unheard of,
Unwritten, unknown?
Ah beautiful passionate body
That never has ached with a heart!
On thy mouth though the kisses are bloody,
Though they sting till it shudder and smart,
More kind than the love we adore is,
They hurt not the heart or the brain,
O bitter and tender Dolores,
Our Lady of Pain.

I think one of the most striking submissive poems I've come across is Alan Ginsberg's "Please Master".

I'm not going to quote it, it's still in copyright. And I didn't mention this link either.

opposingtwilight -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 1:42:44 PM)

I absolutely did not care for that piece of literature though I do see why you say its the most submissive piece. I feel dirty now. Like I peeked into someone's window and saw something I should not have seen. -frowns-

PainSmith -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 2:02:07 PM)

He's not shy and retiring, is he!

opposingtwilight -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 2:02:50 PM)

No. He is not.

abcbsex -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 2:41:24 PM)

One of my favorite poems could have Daddy/daughter sadomasochistic tones if one was to read it like that. I think it's more of a personal exploration for the author of her relationship with her father, with poetic exaggeration.

Sylvia Plath "Daddy"

my favorite part:

"And they stuck me together with glue.
And then I knew what to do.
I made a model of you,
A man in black with a Meinkampf look

And a love of the rack and the screw.
And I said I do, I do.
So daddy, I'm finally through."

Nikolette -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 4:57:55 PM)

I like that ee cumming poem too....

Also, I hadn't heard of that Ginsburg one! I don't know how that could have happened.

Thanks all who shared (I hope to see more)

Also- I'm glad I didn't have to resort to that catfight. But--- for the sake of poetry --- I wudda.

Warming Her Pearls.
By, Carol Anne Duffy.

Next to my own skin, her pearls. My mistress
bids me wear them, warm then, until evening
when I'll brush her hair. At six, I place them
round her cool, white throat. All day I think of her,

resting in the Yellow Room, contemplating silk
or taffeta, which gown tonight? She fans herself
whilst I work willingly, my slow heat entering
each pearl. Slack on my neck, her rope.

She's beautiful. I dream about her
in my attic bed; picture her dancing
with tall men, puzzled by my faint, persistent scent
beneath her French perfume, her milky stones.

I dust her shoulders with a rabbit's foot,
watch the soft blush seep through her skin
like an indolent sigh. In her looking-glass
my red lips part as though I want to speak.

Full moon. Her carriage brings her home. I see
her every movement in my head...Undressing,
taking off her jewels, her slim hand reaching
for the case, slipping naked into bed, the way

she always does...And I lie here awake,
knowing the pearls are cooling even now
in the room where my mistress sleeps. All night
I feel their absence and I burn.

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/14/2008 5:26:41 PM)

I love classic poetry.  Modern poetry less so.  Here's one of my favorites.  The last two lines are the most important with regard to my views on BDSM.

To Lucasta, going to the Wars
Richard Lovelace

TELL me not, Sweet, I am unkind,
  That from the nunnery
Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind
To war and arms I fly.

True, a new mistress now I chase,
  The first foe in the field;
And with a stronger faith embrace
 A sword, a horse, a shield.

Yet this inconstancy is such
   As thou too shalt adore;
I could not love thee, Dear, so much,
   Loved I not Honour more.

Amber: I had to read so much Carol Anne Duffy in school when I was 15 I went right off her, but I haven't heard that one, and I like it. So thank you!

joyinslavery -> RE: BDSM in Poetry, Poetry in BDSM (7/15/2008 9:17:04 PM)

Plenty of poetry about to be had here on CollarMe.  Just check out some of the original poetry already contained in many of the profiles.  Much of it definitely interesting but on the whole, I'd have to say thanks for sharing...

but don't quit your day job.

Have fun.
