http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/12/us/politics/12obama.html?ref=politics

There seems to be a trend starting to form with the Obama campaign, it would seem they don't like being in a townhall setting where they don't get to stack the audience.  He did his damndest to avoid them against Hillary in the last couple months of the primary, and now has turned down every offer made by McCain and other groups.  What is he afraid of?

They opted out of this townhall meeting organized by the American Veterans, Disabled American Veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Veterans for Common Sense and Military Spouse Corporate Career Network, with the following statement.
quote:

“While we unfortunately had a previously scheduled commitment on the date proposed, Senator Obama looks forward to continuing the dialogue he’s been having throughout the country with veterans on how we can better serve our men and women in uniform as they serve us.”

So what is he saying? That the vet organizers of this event are not worth his time?  Changing another appearance or plan hasn't been an issue for Obama in the past, as his moving his acceptance speech to the sports arena shows, he isn't all that worried about the conflicts it causes for folks that have had plans set for close to a year.  I won't mention the concerns he has raised overseas with insisting on speaking in front of the Brandenburg Gate.  It seems the senator from Illinois is more interested in grandstanding and the use of flowery prose, than he is in being specific about issues, or in meeting with those that have a legitimate voice in those issues.

Just my opinions, I would love to read yours,
Thadius

Edited to add the following...

quote:

The organizers then made it clear they would adjust their scheduling to accommodate Obamas, and even with that offer, the Obama campaign is refusing to commit.

He's not snubbed them in the past, so why would he suddenly snub them now?

Why won't he agree to such a meeting with the largest active duty military base in the country?  The organizers have even agreed to move the date to one that works with his schedule.

The only assumption I can come to (this is only my assumption based on opinion), that he doesn't see any benefit for himself to appear at this type of event without being able to pick the participants, and having to stand next to McCain.  I can't think of any other reason for him to decline the invitation, with the organizers being willing to fit it to his schedule (which is the excuse his campaign is using).

I see this as a snub.

Obama isn't a legitimate political candidate, hes a non-singing American Idol winner on tour...  Whats he afraid of? That people will realize that on the basis of his resume and experience hes not qualified to run the dog pound in a major US city much less to lead tthe country... The biggest thing the man ever managed was a non profit with 13 employees and a 400K annual budget. Your average fast food outlet has more than 13 employees and a 400K cash flow.  Think Im kidding about the dog pound? The non profit Obama ran was less than 1/10th the size of the Houston Humane Society. (Hell just the new adoption location they are building is $3,000,000!) Obama has no management experience, no military experience, hes a freshman senator who hasnt accomplished anything of any substance besides learning how to vote "present". He is nothing but a law professor. Thats great in theory, but thats just the point - all theory no practice. Even as a lawyer, I wouldnt let him do a real estate closing or write my will as he has no relevant experience. The Dems really screwed up when they shat upon Hillary, but Im glad to see it a a Republican... BTW - Have you seen The New Yorker cover? I dont usually read it but Im gonna pick one up as a collectible.

Then again it could be he doesn't want to have it broadcast on national networks his desires to use the same "surge strategy", that he claims is a failure, in Afghanistan.

From his op-ed for the NY times today....
quote:

As president, I would pursue a new strategy, and begin by providing at least two additional combat brigades to support our effort in Afghanistan. We need more troops, more helicopters, better intelligence-gathering and more nonmilitary assistance to accomplish the mission there.

I can't wait to see how he tap-dances around this one.
