OK, so periodically I run across slaves with their 12 digit serial numbers.  Linkage Here

What I'm not getting is the "why".  OK, so I could run on over there and provide some information and, I guess, get myself a slave number.  Clearly, as the site owner says in his own treatise, it's all about external validation.  Personally, I find the idea of being "validated" by a faceless web site with a php script behind it somewhat ... well... thin.

I'd love to hear the opinions of anyone who actually has a slave number or has commanded theirs to get one.  What's the deal?  Inquiring minds want to know.

It was only a gimmic to begin with. I knew a girl who had one she used to joke that if I had the UPC then I owned her.

It is an Objectification concept.

I don;t really get it either and agree that if you need a BarCode to feel good about yourself or to Prove your place as a Slave then to me you missed the point.

I did it as a suprise to my Dominant. He had mentioned in passing that it was a cute way to show your devotion with out having to do some drastic body modification or something.

It's not something I was told to do, nor was it something i was expected to do. I did it because I knew it would bring a smile to his face if nothing else.

It was just another little way of saying, I yours willingly because i want to be and I have no problem with the world knowing about it.

I'm not going to go get my slnr tattooed on me or anything but he does have the registration put away in a safe place. His sock drawer i think hehe

I have a slave registry number, but only because I was directed to by a former dom of mine. At the time it added to the feeling of being owned. Now, it really doesn't hold much of a meaning to me. Although, the whole concept is kinda hot in fantasy slave trade sort of way.

i have one...just recently my Master registered me and showed me my number.  He wanted it.  it is simply something He wanted and if it makes Him happy then it makes me happy.   i don't find it validating in any way, i'm no more or less of a sub/slave since i've gotten that number.  i do have to say having a barcode number is a bit humiliating when i think about it...but i like that kind of thing.

The site owner's opinions and the opinions of those who register at the site don't necessarily have to have anything at all in common. I have one of those tucked away somewhere in some directory. I thought they looked kinda cool. I had forgotten about it until this thread. So, yeah... it must be about validation.

Well.....I suppose if one could have the bar code accurately tatooed on their body, along with an instruction to drop you in a mailbox if found and postage would be guaranteed....

Actually...one of my friends registered his woman over there. Hey...if it makes somebody smile, what is the harm? Like one poster said, there is a bit of objectification to it......

It's the BDSM version of "The International Star Registry." It's something of a leather and latex version of giving someone a "Love is..." cartoon book.

The only slave number that has any real relevance to any of us is your "wage slave" number... otherwise known as your SSN.

No, no, no... everyone knows the best way to apply a registration number to property is to brand it on... Go to American Science and Surplus online, and look at the "mule branding kit" there...

Why?

It's an idea, that can capture imagination.

It works in a lot of ways.

One part is a kind of "objectification". "Just a number." Which appeals to some. It isn't so much that you need a bar code to feel good about yourself, but more that it's a way of demonstrating how serious you are, and exploring some parts of surrender that are less tangible. Not everyone's cup of tea, to be sure.

The other side for some is "continuity". When "release" happens, there can be a kind of emotional hangover, and part of that is if a sub/slave has really started to identify with the role, when the relationship ends, that identity get's shaken. One of the positives I've encountered with the Registry is that validation that "owned" might change, but "what i am" remains constant.

Do we *need* that? No. Does it help and serve some? Yes.

Tangibly does it "mean something?" No. All meaning is in context.

Hope that helps.

Actually, I thought about that, since I'm going to be picking up my cautery branding pen this week -- but I like the blood... a servant should spill lifeblood to wear the number I got for him.

You could always tattoo it on along with images of a half dozen of those Forever Stamps and see if that would get her back to ya... come to think of it... maybe I'll have to add some Forever Stamps on mine, too -- and tattoo my return address on his ass.

What's the deal?  Inquiring minds want to know.

The deal is that it is a registry like any other registry: a professional register, a registry license in state marriage, or a credit card number. In other words a registered number gets you what you expect it to get you.
So you could just have easily asked the question:
what's the deal with an engagement ring?
what's the deal with a collar?
what's the deal with an eternity ring?
what's the deal with an eternity collar?
what's the deal with a verbal contract?
what's the deal with a written contract?
what's the deal with a piercing?
what's the deal with a tattoo?
what's the deal with handcuffs?
what's the deal with shackles?
what's the deal with a cage?
what's the deal with a body bag?
what's the deal with a certain look?
what's the deal with a pair of leather boots?
what's the deal with a  (..............................................)?

i agree with this completely, an SRN is as individual in meaning & its context for the person that has it, as is anything else.. a collar, a piercing, anything.. A friend of mine has hers tattoo'd on the back of her neck.. i would never even consider it.

i have an SRN and its been mine for a long time.. For me its mostly an objectification kick, not validation at all.. Though its meant more and less to me in different contexts throughout my journey.

Thanks all so far.  I hadn't considered the objectification angle because, in general, me and mine don't deal in kink all that much but yes, that makes sense if that was someone's fantasy.

Inosfar as it being a symbol like a collar, ring, etc. I'd be fine with that, but I'm kind of struggling as to how that symbolism got loaded onto it for the people involved.  It just seems so... impersonal... at least to me anyway.  That's why I posted here.  I mean, seriously.  For a wedding ring, there is a specific object.  There is an elaborate ceremony attached to the giving of that object.  The whole thing symbolizes a commonly understood thing (marriage).  So it's easy to see how wedding rings get loaded with emotional signficance (mine has only come off once, during surgery, we timed how long it was off and it was put on again before I even reached consciousness... and I STILL hated it being off.  Hers has never come off.  For either of us, the thought of taking off our wedding rings is emotionally traumatic.)  I could say the same thing about collars.

In the end, there may be no answer to that...  It could be that for whatever reasons, two people decide that a registry number has emotional significance and so presto, it does.

Yeah, IF you needed a "barcode" for those things.  That's a big IF.  There's other reasons obviously.  Very individual thing.........luci

Well, go over on the Seek Discipline forum (formerly TSR) and ask the slaves...nicely. They'll give you honest responses.

I had a friend who did that. Every time I saw it it made me think of the people from the concentration camps in Auschwitz.

i have an SRN, i have it tattooed on my back between my shoulder blades.  i have my Master's collar that i wear 24/7.  these things just reinforce in my mind who and what i am. if the collar is taken back, if my Master dismisses me, i am still a slave.  the number just reminds me of that.
