Tal and greetings,

When citing the books, I see two very different kinds of references being made.

1. References to fact, as for example the fact that there are homosexuals, Dommes, and male silk slaves on Gor, not to mention the city of Tharna and the community of Sames.

References to fact depend on the notion that if it's in the books, it's Gorean. The people in the books are Goreans.

2. References to philosophy, where excerpts are presented which express the Gorean view of the facts.

References to philosophy depend on the notion that the Gorean view of the facts is probably (duh) the Gorean view.

The italics are my opinions. This thread is for yours, if you'd like to comment.

IWYW,

Kirata

Interesting Kirata.

When I look at the books I see them broken into different sections myself but my sections are different to yours.

1) The story, usually some sort of moral but also a good science fiction story. The good guys win the bad guys loose, the oldest and best type one that feels “right” to most people.

2) Caricature, I suspect this is related to 1 as it’s easier to show morals when you have extremes, the foolish, the brave, the foolhardy, the cautious, the bitch, the kind to strangers, the slut, the virgin.

3) The battle between the sexes, and the differences between the sexes shown through master slave relationships.

4) The philosophy, usually this is contained in monologues contrasting how Gorean’s think and how Earth people think, there are times however when it is mentioned that both Earth and Gor are wrong and that you should seek some type of balance between the two. You have to take into account that there are caricatures and sarcasm within them and they are extremely broad generalisations designed to make you think and reassess.

5) Master slave moralities.

6) The problems of an unreliable narrator.

7) The customs and practices of the different places on Gor, the laws and society of an alien world and its opposing forces used as a backdrop to illustrate the morals and philosophy not necessarily to illustrate the right way.

Cheryl

it seems clear by book 8 that the battle of the sexes is always won by the males.

"The Beauty Trilogy"

What do you think? Have you read them?

I enjoyed this series, I respect The Gorean Lyfestyle as a very sadistic Domina.

 Sunn,
The books in question are The Gor series, not Anne Rice's S&M novels. But to answer your question, I enjoy her writing style, but I like it a lot better since she's now writing Christian Historical fiction.

Anne Rice is writing WHAT? Holy cow ...

----

Mary, I think the point was that the battle of the sexes could be won by both sexes if they would stop fighting and just deal with the fact that their differences simply allowed them to compliment each other. Or something like that, anyway.

----

And I think Cheryl was 100% spot on on her assessment of the books, themselves though Kirata has a point in that people tend to use quotes from the books in one of two ways. And, unfortunately, when you do that you sometimes miss the point entirely.

 Greetings twilight,
Yep, she came back to the fold about 3 years ago, you can find all the news at her website, http://www.annerice.com
I've written her a few times, and gotten some charming personal e-mail from her. A truly gifted writer. Her two latest are in the Christ The Lord series. Out of Egypt, and The road to Cana.

Seriously?

I think I know where the cheque my father sent me is going to now.  I love historical fiction, I love religious oriented fiction, and I love Anne Rice.

Sounds like a 3 time winner to me.

I once heard that Lange thought people were nutters for wanting to live by his books.

I wonder if he's mindfuckin y'all in revenge?

maybe he will write "sissy pants of gor" just for fun one day?

 Howdy Leatherist,
Actually, what he's stated is that he thinks those who try to take all the plot devices, etc ( livestock like branding of girls i.e.) are nuts. Dr. Lange is most pleased to see people taking the Philosophy behind the books to heart, and using it to better their own lives, and the lives of others. There's a thread on this on the official Gor site at http://www.gorchronicles.com, along with reviews and discussions of the books, including all the new updates (thus bringing the discussion back to the Gor series...sneaky amn't I!)

Cool,nice to know that.

But wasn't his origional intent to write an entertainent series?

Rather than to support "consistency in the gorean lifestyle?"

Not being Dr. Lange, I realy can't say, but considering that if he'd wanted to write simply entertainment, he wouldn't have put all the philosophy in the books, even starting at Tarnsman. And he certainly would not have continued writing in a manner guaranteed to piss off all the feminist types who were bigwigs in sci-fi/fantasy publishing at the time. (Betty Balentine, et.al)
The novels are done in the form of fables, or parables, and therefore use an entertaining medium to get the message across, but they are not simply stories, told only for the purpose of telling stories.

While I agree that Lange loves to stir up feminists, that may just be one of his quirks-eh? Something to generate sales?

I've always wondered if you folks read more into it than he intended-and how much you let yourselves be manipulated by him.

As to Dr. Lange's intents, and such, I think I'll let Simon, or one of the others who has a working relationship with him pop in on this one. First hand info being more accurate and all :-)
I'll look forward to that response!

Greetings Thadius... you were not manipulated it.. you did however manipulate it to suit your needs.. and perhaps.. ONLY perhaps... the same can be said of the books.. The original intent was to sell books and entertain.. perhaps they have been manipulated by the readers into more than was their orignial intent or purpose. If that it is true then you must weigh in your own mind how much relevance that manipulation has in the application of the intent and how much in the manipulation distortion has occured to the purpose and intent...hope that makes sense...

Regards
SD

About as much intent that any story has when it uses philosophy, morals and such. I am sure everyone remembers the phrase "the moral behind the story". As far as manipulation, that tales active intent usually, and a better word may be perception.

Live well,
Orion
