This thread reminds me of a couple things Jack Sparrow said, in the Pirates of the Carribbean flicks.  At one point, he extoles the virtue of "awaiting the opportune moment".  Later, he quips to young Turner, who has just exhibited abysmally poor timing, "If you were waiting for the opportune moment, that was it."

Gotta love that Jack...

Howdy Folks,

For me it depends on where/who/when/what.  There are some things I'm incredibly patient, and others, not in the slightest.    I too am a Merchant, a salesperson and have been for *mumblestwentyfiveyears*, and if I believe an customer "needs" my product I have tons of patience.  In fact, after 7 years finally the customer realized how right I was, and signed a contract with me.

Now, IF it comes to other things, for example, the Gathering, I want done what I want done and when I want it done, and oh yes how I want it done.   And as long as the girls do it, I'm happy.   I have little to none.  So my patience is situational.   I think of Brule, and I've seen him have tons of patience as well, AND I've seen him zilch, zip, nada and zero.  Maybe this is something that is situational for most everyone, and not as much gender related.

Now I know for a fact, Babs has none whatsoever!  ~laughs~  The fiery red head gets her horns in a uproar quickly.    I"m not saying that is a bad thing, it just is her.

Take care,

Liz

Great topic Lisa!  Thanks!

gemmie, you do realize that this statement makes it seem as if you feel that violent tendencies go hand in hand with being a Gorean ... Or at least a Gorean master, right? Which, I would wager is not the case as the rest of your post did not come across that way at all.

Might he have punished you? Oh probably. But punishment is not akin to "being beaten to a pulp" ... I only say this so that anyone else who comes along won't read and think, Dang! Gorean men are crazy! They beat their women to a pulp when they speak out of turn! ... 'Cause, thats not true.

If it was, I'd be pulpified many times over. -ahem-

greetings Masters and Mistresses
greetings slaves
greetings twilight

thanks for pointing that out.  i didn't mean it that way in any manner ....... but the Gorean Men i know, if i had been Theirs?   oh yeah, punishment would have abounded.  of course, if i had been then who i am now - i would have never have spoken.

well wishes,
gemmie

Patience comes from the latin word pati..to suffer, to endure, to bear. Patience is something that can be learned, honed and used as a tool.  It's a double-edged sword and knowing when to use it seems pretty important to me. Showing too much patience in the wrong situation can give imply weakness and/or indifference, while showing patience in the right situation will imply strength of character and self-control.
Knowing when to use it and when not to, I believe, is called wisdom.

Greetings Anarrus,

Your post resonates with me. When i said above that i am working on my impatient nature, i am and while difficult - it is very rewarding. i have 2   writings saved that i read frequently when impatience flirts with a situation.

" Patience is a hard discipline.  It is not just waiting until something happens over which we have no control:  the arrival of the bus, the end of the rain, the return of a friend, the resolution of a conflict. Patience is not a waiting passivity until someone else does something.

Patience asks us to live the moment to the fullest, to be completely present to the moment, to taste the here and now, to be where we are. When we are impatient we try to get away from where we are.  We behave as if the real thing will happen tomorrow, later and somewhere else.

Let's be patient and trust that the treasure we look for is hidden in the ground on which we stand.

Henri Nouwen, Bread for the Journey.

For someone learning the value of living in the moment - the above was revelationary to me.

This other is a quote that regularly finds its way to my bathroom mirror whenever i feel impatient with major change in my life:

" Do you have patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?"
Lao Tzu~

Just wanted to share :-)

Patience = Tolerance or forebarance.

quote:

the ability to wait, or to continue doing something despite difficulties, or to suffer without complaining or becoming annoyed
Cambridge Dictionary Online

quote:

Middle English pacient, from Anglo-French, from Latin patient-, patiens, from present participle of pati to suffer; perhaps akin to Greek pēma suffering
Date: 14th century

1: bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint2: manifesting forbearance under provocation or strain3: not hasty or impetuous 4: steadfast despite opposition, difficulty, or adversity5 a: able or willing to bear
Merriam-Webster Dictonary

no I am not particularly patient I am impetous and hasty.. I am an interanl complainant.. I have learned to be less vocal in my complaint process

Serene
quote:

Middle English, from Latin serenus clear, cloudless, untroubled
Date: 15th century

1 a: clear and free of storms or unpleasant change <serene skies> b: shining bright and steady <the moon, serene in glory — Alexander Pope>2: august —used as part of a title <His Serene Highness>3: marked by or suggestive of utter calm and unruffled repose or quietude <a serene smile>
Cambridge Dictionary
quote:

–adjective

1.
calm, peaceful, or tranquil; unruffled: a serene landscape; serene old age.

2.
clear; fair: serene weather.

3.
(usually initial capital letter) most high or august (used as a royal epithet, usually prec. by his, your,
etc.): His Serene Highness. –noun

4.
serenity; tranquillity.

5.
Archaic. a clear or tranquil expanse of sea or sky.

Yes I have the quality of serenity .. but it's likea duck in the water.. the feet are paddling relentlessly.

I think that one is not exclusive or inclusive of the other.. I smile politely nod make the appropriate encouraging sounds but inside I am not at all patient about it.. I do not tolerate it with forebarance. My father used to say “Patience is a virtue, Virtue is a grace; Both put together Make a very pretty face”.. where that comes from I have no idea. I've learned to control my impatience as I have matured but it is a character trait of mine.. whereas the ability to be serene is something that I have garnered over the years inorder to deal with my internal impatience.

Greetings to the Free
and to the property,

i have had a hard time with patience. i'm ADHD, very fidgety, and had trouble waiting for things. As was mentioned earlier, time in the Army did help me master the waiting part of 'hurry up and wait'. *lol* i have gotten to the point where i can sit quietly for long periods of time while waiting for something to happen. It is a problem i never have while in my Master's presence because He has a calming effect on me.

Serenity is different, and won the hard way. you learn to let the things that cannot be changed wash over you, bending with the flow instead of being stomped flat by them. you learn not to get upset about little things, only things that really matter. It's a stillness carried inside. It helps with the patience, but one is not necessary for the other.

That's about the best i can explain it.

Urm.... i was going to have my essay ready on time, but my cat is going to eat it before i can. Sorry!

wishing You well,

g

Tal to the Free and property,
Tal Anarrus,

My compliments not only on the content of your original post, on this thread, but the way you phrased it as well. I did sales for many years and like any profession, if you want to be good you study your craft. If you want to be a 3% 'er you learn patience and study the ones that came befor you. I learned to love the english language and the way a tapestry of words can be woven together to create a verbal image.

I wish you well,

In my experience, patience is a personal trait that is shapely partly by temperment and partly by environment and training.  Some people have more or less of it than the average lump sum in the middle.

I also think that men and women tend to be patient about different issues.  Men tend to be patient when handling military or political strategy.  However, women usually have a higher level of patience dealing with unmentionables and other forms of caretaking.

Edited to add an Erma Bombeck joke -

Greetings,

Ok, I admit it.  I have a patience problem.  My middle name should have been patience for all the times I heard that word.  I want it yesterday.

The gorean men I have met, seem to have no problems with that particular attribute.  Is it the level of mastery they have acheived?  Part of "master yourself"...first?   Or does it come with the personal character of a man who naturally finds themselves moved by the series?

The responses state that it is a learned skill...I was wondering if there was a specific inherited personality that made it easier to learn for some and more difficult for others?

It's Friday...the mind is on high gear... :)

Lisa

Tal Orion,

As I teased the smiley one in my reply to her essay, I thought holding back my critique would be a good lesson in patience.

She did a very good job of it, and most miss her truest example of patience, that of waiting for Thorns return.  While it was tested at times, it never broke, for that I give her very much credit.  Too, the man that owns her deserves a salute, for having the foresight and patience of owning such a treasure.

I wish you well,
Thadius

Tal Orion and Thadius,

Agreed on all counts. Thorns has a slave to be proud of. Her essay was original and surprised the hell out of me. Her originality and humor was pleasing.

I wish you both well
