I doubt anyone will be brave enough to tackle something like this, but: If some blanket statements about Gorean culture could be listed in the style of the 10 Commandments, what would they be? There are moral "codes" for Gorean men. What specifically are they? I know, read the books. But are they literally posted somewhere as a list? Gorean Free Companions? Gorean slaves?

Frequently when someone is asked, "what is Gorean?", they are told, "read the books". I think that is the "easy" answer, but not the right one. When one asks of a pastor, "what is Christianity?", is he told, "go read the bible"?...

To do what you are sugesting Jason is to do what many role-players do and have a list given to them by their mentors and happly role play Gor without ever having read the books. If you want to know what it is to be Gorean from a lifestyle point, it is imperative that you read the books to learn the nuances of the life, to see the attitudes, to understand many areas you need to see them at work albeit in badly written fiction. The nearest I've seen is the Warriors Codes for the Scarlet Cast which although was never codified as such in the books it was dome by a RP group (or so I'm told). I have a copy of that because it is well written, but I'd never claim it is book.

Hah! See? "Read the books"...lol I am personally in the process of reading the books. I am on Book 7 at the moment. However, when someone asks, what the major priciples and beliefs of Gor are (which was the main idea of my post. sorry I wasn't clear...), the answer leads me to believe that is it something that must not be clearly understood...

Are Christians "role-players" because they were drawn to Christianity by the 10 Commandments?

What about the cornerstones listed here: http://www.homestone.org/cornerstones-withquotes.html

Does this sound like a good start to you? Or do you disagree?

Howdy :)

I'm taking a stab at it but keep in mind, this is just what my observations have been in reading the books and associating with people who call themselves Gorean.

These are 10 things that I believe would be requirements to be a good Gorean, not just Gorean per se.

1. Know yourself - Shed societal conditioning and be in touch with who you are on a primal level as well as with nature.

2. Do not compromise personal principles to ease your path.

3. Take responsibility and be accountable for yourself and to those whom you encourage to rely on you.

4. Do the right thing, even when no one is looking.

5. Men embrace your masculinity (women, your femininity) and understand & appreciate beauty and do these things without shame.

6. Value and practice things such as integrity, probity, fidelity, loyalty, honesty.

7. Read the Gorean novels (and even perhaps Lange's non-fiction too), and have an understanding of the philosopy behind them and how it applies to humankind.

8. Do not let others dictate how you live but rather let your life be a testament as to who you are. (Excepting the law of course - they get to dictate that stuff)

9. Value Gorean concepts, such as the Home Stone, Free Companionship, & Caste Codes.

10. Make the choice to wear that mantle (Gorean) and accept the responsibility for doing so.

Those are just my thoughts on it. If I had to sum it up into 10 items, those would be it.

Everyone else's mileage probably varies.

Well wishes :)

Tal yA4me,

I remember not so long ago in a private chat with several of my Gorean Peers in the US, and there was a man present who asked a similar question, only his was regarding how to live the Gorean livestyle. One of my Gorean brothers (and yes for those interested, he and I have shared salt in the Tahari bonding ritual as per book), posted the following quote which I now give to you...

"Do not ask the stones or the trees how to live , they can not tell you ; they do not have tongues; do not ask the wise man how to live for, if he knows , he will know he cannot tell you; if you would learn how to live , do not ask the question; its answer is not in the question but in the answer, which is not in words; do not ask how to live, but, instead, proceed to do so." From Marauders of Gor pg9

As to what it is to be a Gprean Man, I'll give you this quote:

My delirium this time , interestingly to me, had been much different than it had when, long ago, the poison had first raged in my body. At that time I had been miserable, and weak, even calling out to a woman, who was only a slave, to love me. But, somehow, in the North, in Torvaldsland, I had changed. this I knew. There was a different Tarl Cabot than ever there had been. Once there had been a boy by his name, one with simple dreams, naive, vain, one shattered by betrayal of his codes, the discovery of a weakness, where he thought there was only strength. That boy had died in the delta of the Vosk; in his place had come Bosk of Port Kar, ruthless and torn, but grown into his manhood: and now there was another, one whom I might, if I wished, choose to call again Tarl Cabot. I had changed. Here, with the Forkbeard, with the sea, the wind, in his hall and in battle, I had become, somehow , much different. In the North my blood had found itself, learning itself; in the north I had learned strength, and how to stand alone. I thought of the Kurri. They were terrible foes. Suddenly, incredibly, I felt love for them. I recollected the head of the giant Kur, mounted on its stake, in the ruins of the hall of Svein Blue Tooth. One cannot be weak who meets such beasts. I laughed at the weakness instilled into the men of earth. Only men who are strong, without weakness, can meet such Beasts. One must match them in strength, in intellect, in terribleness, in ferocity. In the north I had grown strong. I suddenly realized the supreme power of the united Gorean will, not divided against itself, not weak, not crippled like the wills of earth. I felt a surge of power, of unprecedented, unexpected joy. I had discovered what it was to be Gorean. I had discovered what is was, truly, to be male, to be a man. I was Gorean.
From Marauders of Gor pg290

Sure it's fiction but my friend, take the time to close your eyes and think past the fiction, those words are telling you what it is to be a man.

Pwerhaps this will encourage you to read, not just browse but to wade through the badly written characterisations, bad plots, typos and repeditive comments and try to see what it is to actually be Gorean within your heart and then the question becomes "How do I live this on earth as part of a greater civilisation?" My first quote will guide you there.

Dave Letterman style:

10. Don't feed the Tarn.

9. If you require more than one bolt of fabric for a slave cloth...you aren't a kajira...you're a kettle girl.

8. Don't drink your paga and then attempt to drive even a giant lizard...the lizard may mistake you for a pickled delicacy and eat you.

7. When serving Free men sip the drink first delicately to prove it is not poisoned then deliver the drink with a gaze down...unless ofcourse you have acid reflux...most Gorean Free men don't prefer backwash in their drink.

6. If when you do your slave dance, china falls from the shelves and a suspicious crack appears in the tile floor...you aren't a kajira. (See also 9 as it likely applies to you.)

5. Be sure none of Your Masters dogs have been trained by Pavlov before doing a bell dance with them in the room...beastiality is just sick and wrong.

4. If the closest thing you have ever come into combat with is your little brother over the last cookie, you aren't a warrior...deal with it...move on..pick an appropriate caste.

3. Learn how to say "yes, Mistress" and actually mean it...hell hath no fury like a Harpie, err coughing...she means free Woman, scorned.

2. The appropriate response to anything except being on fire is "yes, Master". If on fire then say "yes, Master, and oh by the way this girl is on fire, Sir." And do it smiling and demurely damn it.

1. And the number one commandemnt to being Gorean is DON'T TAKE YOURSELF SO FRIGGIN SERIOUSLY!

Tal and greetings

I am finding all this rather amuzing so here is my 10 Commandments of Gor. Some are funny..so are a bit more serious. And yes they do come from the books.

1. Honor and Respect above life, for without them there is no life.

2. The Home Stone, For it is the one thing that unites all of Gor.

3. He is not your enemy, He is your Sword Brother.

4. Gor is Harsh, Gor is Cruel, Gor is Unfair, Gor is Gor.

5. A Free Woman is a slave without a collar.

6. A slave is happiest when serving.

7. Above The Law, is the Heart.

8. A Master without a slave, is only a man, a slave without a Master is only a woman, together they are complete.

9. We are All Warriors.

10. If You are ever asked to come to a meeting and not bring a sword....BRING ONE.

I Wish You Well

Bravo, allyC! That was exactly the type of thing I was looking for... No role-playing crap (sorry, rper's...). Real life points that someone could understand immediately, then wish to read the books to expand on the concepts... I like it.

(However, the David Letterman list was also amazingly clever...lol)

Tal all,
I'm a newcomer to this site, but see a few familiar faces, so thought I'd jump in on the discussion. A few years back I posted this elsewhere, and some thought it worth starting a discussion over.

As far as introducing myself, I'll let my words speak for me.

I wish you well,
Arthur
------------------------------------------------
What is it to be “Gorean”, and who decides? Each can only decide for himself; consensus will emerge. Below is my definition of what it means to be Gorean.

The Ten Commandments of Gor.

1. The world is what it is, not what we would have it be.
Should have, would have and could have are useless phrases. What IS? Always begin with an honest appraisal of what is, not how or what you would like things to be. True change isn’t possible unless you know where you begin from. You can change the world, but know what it is you’re changing.
2. To thine own self be true.
Take time to discover your own true nature, who and what you are, and try to become the best “you” possible. If your nature is that of a slave, become beautiful and perfectly obedient. If your nature is that of a Master, master yourself and then learn to master others. If your nature is to follow, become a loyal and trusted follower. If your nature is to lead, become worthy of leading and inspire the best in those who follow you. Do not ignore your natural or instinctual nature, but understand and control it, rather than letting it control you. “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
3. Practice honesty and integrity in everything you do.
Let your word be your bond. Give your trust to few, but let that trust be absolute. Have a code of conduct, and stick to it. Be true to those you call friend, for there is no honor without loyalty.
4. Be one with your world and environment.
This includes knowing and understanding your surroundings, understanding it’s natural ebb and flow. Maintain your environment, and let all your actions be in harmony with it. Know your place in the scheme of things, nature and society, and act accordingly.
5. Give honor where honor is due.
Recognize worth in others and respect that worth. If anyone acts with honor and in accord with their nature and station, give them the respect you yourself would expect in that station. If a woman is by nature free, and acts accordingly, honor her as a Free Woman. If a man is by nature a Master, but acts the part of a liar or servant, give him no respect. If a woman is by nature a slave, recognize the freedoms and limitations that places upon her.
6. Whatsoever you do, do it fully and with your heart.
If any act is worth doing, it is worth doing well. Don’t be satisfied with “good enough”, strive for perfection. Whether you are working in wood or stone, writing a poem or software program, cooking a meal, planning a battle or designing a cathedral - take pride in your product and make it the very best you can.
7. Live each day as if it will be your last.
Let no needful thing go undone. Make plans for the future, but with the assumption you might not be there. Love fully, mourn freely, celebrate openly and fight valiantly. Live without regrets.
8. Accept responsibility for yourself, your actions, and those things dependent upon you.
Defend yourself, your rights as you see them, those dependent upon you and your property. Blame none for the consequences of your own actions, or the vagaries of fate, except yourself. Expect no one else to defend or provide for you without a prior arrangement. Understand that the world isn’t fair, nor does it owe you anything. Take charge of your own destiny.
9. Respect in their places wisdom, strength and beauty.
Give any one or thing that exemplifies any of these three their due. Recognize and praise these things wherever they are found, in proportion to their worth. It takes wisdom to ordain, strength to perform, and beauty to adorn all great and important undertakings.
10. Find some work or purpose and excel at it.
Discover those things in you that are unique and valuable, and glory in them. He is most blessed that loves his work, that spends his days doing what gives him joy.

Ten Commandments of Gor From a Free Womans Perspective.

1st Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World of Gor Can Survive Even Its Owner Giving Up. Buy The Books.
*I stopped work on the twenty-sixth, Witness of Gor, when
the blacklisting became clear. There was no point in finishing it.
John Normans own words published, 1996 When he gave up the 20 year
battle against his being blacklisted.
In 2001, New World Publishers emerged, combining conventional
publishing methods and the technology era of the internet, and,
in partnership with ereads.com, re-released Tarnsman of Gor.
NWP announced plans to release all of John Norman’s Gor series
again, as well as a promise to publish the 26th in the series,
Witness of Gor,for the writer. Released Jan.2003
http://www.scifan.com/writers/nn/NormanJohn.asp
ITS IN A GOREANS WEAKEST OF TIMES THAT HIS TRUE STRENTHS BECOME REVEILED.*

2nd Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World of Gor Knowns Nothing More Important Than [Homestone.]
In Gorean, the term GOR means "Homestone." The planet itself is,
quite literally, the Homestone of its people. Further
As Bluto of Treve has said "a HomeStone is the physical,
spiritual, social and emotional anchor of a Gorean.
It is a the place a FreePerson owes loyalty, fealty
and honor.. for most it is the place of their birth..
for others it is an adopted home...for a peasant it
is no more than a rock in his hut, but each defends
his HomeStone with his life."one who speaks of Home
Stones should stand, for matters of honor are here
involved, and honor is respected in the barbaric codes
of Gor

3rd Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World of Gor Knows Nothing More Important Besides Homestone Then Honor.
There are no mere points of Honor.
Vagabonds of Gor

4th Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World of Gor Is Commanded By a Higher Being to be Respected.
He had been destroyed by the PriestKings as casually as
one might jerk loose the thong of a sandal. He had disobeyed
and he had been destroyed, immediately and with grotesque
dispatch, but the important thing was, I told myself, that
he had disobeyed, that he could disobey, that he had been
able to disobey and choose the ignominious death he knew
must follow. He had won his freedom though it had, as the
Goreans say, led him to the Cities of Dust, where I think,
not even the Priest-Kings care to follow. He had, as a man,
lifted his fist against the might of the Priest-Kings and
so he had died, defiantly, though horribly, with great nobility.
*Priest Kings of Gor*

5th Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World of Gor Is Ruled by The Sword.
there is nothing-- no justice, no civilization, no society,
no community, no peace. WITHOUT THE SWORD THERE IS NOTHING.
Before the sword he said, there is no right, no wrong,
only fact--a world of what is and what is not, rather than
a world of what should be and should not be. There is no
justice until the sword creates it, establishes it,
guarantees it, gives it substance and significance.
He lifted the weapon, wielding the heavy metal blade as
though it were a straw. First the sword--he said,
then government--then law--then justice."
* Tarnsman Of Gor*

6th Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World Of Gor's Main Labor Comes From The Free Not Slaves"
Male slaves, on Gor, are not particularly valuable, and do
not command high prices. Most labor is performed by free men.
Hunters of Gor

7TH Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World Of Gor Is Not Fair,Equal Or Always Taught By Man.
I turned away from her and following Samos, left
.the chamber She will have to learn Gorean and quickly
said Samos referring to the blondish earth slave. LET
MY SLAVES WITH SWITCHES TEACH HER I SAID. I will said
Samos. THERE WAS NO SWIFTER WAY FOR AN EARTH GURL
TO LEARN GOREAN WAYS.
*Tribesmen of Gor*

8TH Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World Does Not Always Have Its Start In A Free Man.
What have I here?" I asked. Tab said it, and quietly,
"The Home Stone of Port Kar." "Now," said I, facing the
man who had told me there was but one choice, that of
flight, "Shall we fly?" He looked at the simple rock,
wonderingly. "I have never had a Home Stone before,"
he said. "Shall we fly?" I asked. "Not if we have a
Home Stone," he said. I held up the rock. "Do we have
a Home Stone?" I asked the men. "I will accept it as
my Home Stone," said the slave boy, Fish. None of the
men laughed. THE FIRST TO ACCEPT THE HOMESTONE OF PORT KAR
WAS ONLY A BOY, AND A SLAVE BUT HE HAD SPOKEN AS A UBAR.
*Raiders of Gor*

9TH Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World Does Not Always Have Him Commanding
Verna removed her sleen knife from her belt. She handed
it to me. I stood there, holding the knife. The other
girls stood ready, some half crouching. All had removed
their knives from their sheaths. The place of which of
these said Verna will you take? I do not understand I
said ONE OF THESE SAID VERNA YOU WILL TAKE OR MY SELF
YOU WILL FIGHT TO THE DEATH.
*Captive of Gor*

10th Commandment From a Free Womans Perspective
A Man Ruled World Does Not Always Mean He'll Be The Victor Over Woman
Sometimes slave girls are forced to fight slave girls,
perhaps with steel claws fastened on their fingers, or
several girls, variously armed, will be forced to fight
a single man, or a small number of men. Surviving girls,
of course, become the property of those whom they have
fought; MEN WHO LOSE ARE, OF COURSE, SLAIN.
*Assassin of Gor*

Tal Iron Bear,

What most miss in those quotes is pretty important. The classic battle between good and evil in the books, personafied by the battle between Priest Kings and Kurri is an even more classic battle than most understand or believe. In its most simplistic form it is that battle that rages inside every man - between weakness and strength, between cowardice and courage, between being all that you can be or choosing something less. Lange was a more than competant philosopher, and the fantasy is a compositon of icons that represent the world around us. There is virtually nothing from the flora and fauna to the people and places that does not stand for some higher order thought or ideal. My suggestion to the new members of our fraternity is not to read the books. It would be to reread the books, and do so not with your Earth centric eyes. Understand in your heart that what this world has taught you about what to be and who you are is a lie. Then read with that lie forced from you. Then, and only then, will the words Norman wrote take on the meaning that he intended to convey to us.

Be well,

Omega

Be well,

Tal Omega,
I most heartely concure. The first thing I was told of Gor is that Gor lives in your heart. If that is true then you will read far beyond the "stories" of Gor in the books, and you will learn both what you can be and how to live so that you can achieve it. Somewhere on this personal sword quest you have undertaken, you will become Gorean.

If I were Gorean or anything....................
it would be 01 thru 10...........

It would be:
What will be carved on your gravestone, because of this...........
because that is the last homestone you can defend...
