Untouched1282 -> "A WebMD Nation?" (11/8/2008 9:35:31 AM)

It's been awhile since I posted one of my oft-controversial threads so I decided it was time to leave my mark on the collective backside of CollarMe once again.

Today's question has to deal with safety. In particular, I'm curious to know how upfront and honest you are with medical professionals before (and after) you partake in particularly dangerous actions. How do YOU learn your craft? Do you visit other dominants who've been practicing certain techniques for years? Do you read up and/or watch video online? Do you make a visit to your family doctor and ask him/her about the dangers of cutting someone to deep or thrusting a bit too far?

How do you know where to draw the line?

(A rather tame yet important thread, I think. Feel free to elaborate and expand upon the topic. I'm quite limited with experience and knowledge of many of the styles of play out there so feel free to have at it, CM!)

...51 views (and counting) but no responses haha

I thought it was an interesting post, anyhow.

Might do better in Health and Safety?

Personally, I don't have health insurance, so I don't have to worry about explaining bruises and other suspicious marks.

When it comes to marking others, I use a healthy dose of common sense, and a muddled past in medical training. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to think that perhaps I *shouldn't* plunge the scalpel directly into someone's chest. Likewise, if it starts bleeding too much for comfort, common sense says pack some gauze onto it.

I haven't experimented too much with cutting, staples and a needle or two is more in my comfort zone, plus, I have failed to find a submissive that will actually follow through with all of his bragging. [8|] I'm limited to a friend that I play with occasionally, and myself, although I don't doodle on myself as much anymore.

Untouched1282 -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/9/2008 12:41:17 PM)

Thank you very much for your candid respone, Ms Lynnxz.

And I will repost this thread in health and safety. ALthough, I am not looking for advice as much as I am the past history of others.

Thanks

We are very honest with My lil ones Doctors. They all know we are lifestyle. We have no reason to hide it. It is really hard to shock people in the medical field. They could probably tell us things that would shock us. I had to ask about the affects of certain medication that My lil one is on. I had to make some adjustments on what we do but such is life.

Sylverdawn -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/9/2008 7:00:58 PM)

I tell my doctors what they need to know.. and we try to use kinky friendly professionals..as to learning my craft.. I read.. I research.. and I get training from people who know what they are doing.. I was taught rope bondage by someone who has been doing it for more than twenty years.. and he let me use his submissive and showed me knot by knot.. I have been to many a Jay Wiseman seminar as well as Midori.. I attend conferences where how to do the following is done..and I never do something without practicing it ... I dont break my toys.

I'm glad to see your open with your lifestyle even in your most vulnerable of circumtances. Have they ever attempted to talk you out of doing something?

Miss Sylverdawn --

I love the way you ended your thread: "[You] don't break [your] toys". I love that. It shows a stewardship, a true ownership of your property. It shows a concern for both of your well beings :)

well done.

After taking the time to learn about a kink, master a craft, have you ever lost your interest for it, either due to how much work was required do it properly or the potential dangers that you witnessed/learned about, or maybe even found it to be less stimulating that you originally imagined?

FullfigRIMaam -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 1:56:04 AM)

I don't do anything that would deliberately break skin, and absolutely not into cutting or using sharps.   I do use insertable things, and if into delicate areas, sterile tecnique; this guarantees nothing, and still I would want my sub/slave to simply describe his symptoms honestly, without further elaboration whenever possible.   M

Do potential health risks impact your likes/dislikes, or what you desire to do? Does the potential of having to seek medical attention, possibly "go public" enter into your decision-making process? ?(I know it sound far more scandalous than it really is. I apologize for the melodrama haha)

Yes.   I'm fair game for a number of things whether I think of them or the toy/"guinea pig"  thinks of them.  My considerations are 1)does he trust me to do this, and knows my ultimate goal is to protect him and do no harm, and 2) will he sell me out to authorities, if god forbid something goes wrong while I was acting on something that should only be done to patients who've consented and know the risks.   I try to spend time only with people whom I can trust, and whom I care about enough to protect to the best of my ability.

Absolutely!   Not only do I have a somewhat conservative family (and some of these things would embarrass them), I have a job that I could lose should I prove myself to be an irresponsible or careless human being.   M

tsatske -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 3:29:31 AM)

This is in Ask a Mistress, and I'm a slave.
But for me, all of my primary docs know I actively practice consentual BDSM, and have notes on my chart to that effect (because they have large practices and another doc may see me.)
It is easy to say in advance, 'if you sometimes see bruises and marks they come from consentual sex play', and then back that up with, 'that was from consentual play', then to try to convince a doc worried about it when he sees it that you are not being battered.
Further more, I am adament about being able to discuss health issues with my doc.
On the top of my list of examples of what I probably would never tell a doctor, used to be - I participate in bastinado. I am a brittle diabetic, so, i thought - i just don't want to have that discussion.
A year ago i got a toe infection. Just a random thing that happens - but I got a celulitose and ended up sitting in the ER, very frightened about the fate of my leg.
I said to the doctor - 'I practice bastinado with my partner. Did we cause this? is this safe?'
after asking for a definition and precise description, the doctor said, if you don't break the skin, you should be fine. (Master does my foot inspections for me, he is very aware of my condition.)
I had a friend nearly die of food poisoining because she was unwilling to go to the ER covered in bruises from the previous nights play.
I tell my doctor everything. I count on medical confidentailty. I am not willing to risk my health by lying to my doctor. When I was hospitalized early in our relationship, Master spent a few days sitting my my hospital bed and chuckling, surprised, i guess, by how forth coming I am with doctors. How can they treat me if i lie to them?

PeonForHer -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 4:36:38 AM)

When explaining an unfortunate result to a medic at the accident dept of a hospital, Untouched, it's a complete waste of time trying to make something up.  They  "collect" anecdotes of the BS they've heard.  My bro, who's an ambulance paramedic, has a wealth of these.  Things like,

"How did that matchstick become inserted in your penis"?
- "I was trying to light a cig while sitting on the toilet and it slipped, then just slid in"

- "I didn't insert that goldfish into my vagina.  I was changing its aquarium water when I slipped and fell on it.  Then it just swam so far up I couldn't reach it."

Anyway, all the medics I've come across have been very "relaxed" (not to say downright crude) about their sexual interests (especially nurses, for some reason).  They've not only seen it, but probably done it themselves before, too.

UmbraDomina -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 9:32:04 AM)

we are not open with our doctors, becouse my beloved hubbypet is in the medical field/world in upper managment. Unfortunaly even though there is supposed to be confidential, we do worry over either of us being outed from it.
We do avoid playing a week before he has a check up to avoid the questions, but in a emergency we would just deal with it, and the risk to go to the ER or such.
We do play rough..... I openly admit I am a sexual sadist, I enjoy seeing bruises, blood, welts...... mmmmmmmm.
I do also do everything possible to keep my beloved hubbypet safe. Breaks in skin, are cleaned and banadged after play, all injuries are monitored.
I have taken basic and advanced first aid classes to help me keep up with any care that might be needed, and also have a very well stocked first aid kit.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 9:51:48 AM)

After a long time of playing rough, I have never needed to do anything beyond basic first aid.  I have the examples of others before me as a terrible warning--like my friend who had to have surgery to remove that glass candlestick from his lower intestine...

That said, emergencies do not require explanations, they require *treatment*.   I work hard to avoid them.

mztresn0w -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/10/2008 4:00:05 PM)

No none of her doctors have tried to talk us out of anything. I am very cautious with her on blood thinners and watch our impact play. What I use to spend hours doing to her and getting the results she sought in bruising now happens alot quicker. I just change things up more often when we do have time to play. It is more control on my part then hers. I have to be careful and not forget myself or I could really hurt her.  My first concerns is her health. I plan on spending the rest of my life with her.

SweetDommes -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/11/2008 7:43:38 AM)

As I'm a nurse and Holly has a solid medical background as well, we have a better concept than the "average person" with that kind of thing - however, Holly and I do have a policy that if we are doing something new, we try it on each other first rather than risking a boy.  I also think that, in general, you will find that the people who post here are either medically inclined or have someone that they can go to before doing something risky.  I know that all of the active people in the munch that we used to go to were CPR and first aid certified, and at the one we go to now, they don't start their play party until there are at least two CPR/first aid trained people there (in case one wants to play, then the other is "on call")

RealSub58 -> RE: "A WebMD Nation?" (11/12/2008 12:45:38 PM)

Scratching me head cause I dont understand what my "real" primary care physcisian has to do with what the website http://webmd.com is all about.As to being honest with my PCP about our kinks...sure am upfront cause they always ask the question:  "Do you feel afraid or in danger with anyone you know?"

I did my PhD in Literature but it crossed into the medical field and Monday mornings passing the ER were always good for stories.... You need a strong stomach to go with your cup of coffee... Bathing by candlelight and slipping seemed to be a convenient excuse for rather large candles up the rectum and too far in to get out, and the hoovering accidents... They actually had a trophy vitrine... Amazing how many local politicians with strong moral and family values do tend to take baths by candlelight and slip repeatedly, obviously their pay is lousy and doesn't stretch to those mats that should avoid those accidents or they are so energy aware that they rather use candles than electric lights, usually also happens when the wife and kids are away
