Tal all,

Discussions about recreating a sticky Gorean FAQ thread continually restart. Additionally, holidays typically see a spike in the curious wandering to the Gorean board, asking "What IS Gor?" and setting off a new round of discussions.

While none of these are going to fit the bill, they are at least enough of an overview that the newbie can recognize and avoid missteps, and posters who've been around a while may restart the discussion if they will from a point of knowledge, rather than rehashing.

So here are a few past discussions, all with different intents and purposes:

Trevalyan's "For those wishing to learn about Gor"
Stephann's "Starting FAQ Thread!"
Thadius' "Everything you ever wanted to know about Goreans, but were to afraid to ask."
Tim's "The Newcomer"

Moving beyond that "introductory" information is this thread:
Bull's "What is beyond the simple definition of 'What is this Gor stuff all about?'"
...and many other threads address discussions among the Free about deeper looks into Gor.

Why don't we have a Sticky FAQ thread? Here's a discussion:
Karenn's "Volunteering for an Undefined 'Job' on the Forum"
[The original "Editor Nominations Thread" appears to be gone--too bad, because it was a good, open, civil, frank discussion that showed us at our best, and it also clearly delineated the difficulties of creating a sticky FAQ thread.]

Perhaps other folks will post other significant threads I've overlooked.

And for newbies---in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Click it, and you'll see you can make it specific to the Gorean board, as well as narrow your search to Topics only and in a variety of other ways.

Live well, all.

Tim

Tal Tim,

A very noble attempt. Let's hope it works...but as they say....
"You can lead a horse to water...."
No that's not a Gorean quote, but applicable in this case.

Tal Tim,

As Anarrus said "let's hope it works". For it to be more than a temporary fix though, someone will need to periodically "renew" the thread to keep it on the front page of threads where the casual visitor would be more likely to see it.

Have a happy thanksgiving,
T

Seems time has been a major factor, too, in getting anywhere, so I suppose this may be the best thing.

I certainly did not feel comfortable progressing with it myself without someone with an opposing view to "play ball" with.

Health,

If people here are generally happy with this, I don't might rewriting the post so it's innocuous, anonymous, and thus more appropriate for a sticky thread--simply stating that we do have threads discussing FAQs, giving the links, and leaving it at that.

I don't know what the mods might think of the idea, but we can always politely ask. They were, remember, open to the general idea originally.

Tal Tim,

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Listing FAQ threads and/or "reference"/"must-read" threads may be the closest we'll get to a real FAQ any time soon, and will certainly be quite useful to many.

And, as others said: thanks.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Tal all,

Well, as I did offer to rewrite this as something potentially appropriate for a sticky thread, as the reaction on the board seems supportive, and as this thread has seen regular hits (and we didn't have any holiday "What is Gor?" trouibles as in the past), here's my suggestion:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those new to Gor, these threads address Frequently Asked Questions:

For those wishing to learn about Gor
Starting FAQ Thread!
Everything you ever wanted to know about Goreans, but were to afraid to ask
The Newcomer

What is beyond the simple definition of "What is this Gor stuff all about?" might interest those with Gor experience/knowledge. You can also find a host of discussions on specific points--in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Click it, and you'll see you can make it specific to the Gorean board, as well as narrow your search to Topics only and in a variety of other ways

Here is a link to a list of the Gor books

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to add a thread about where to get the books--I always have great luck with Amazon, but others have great resources for dBooks. We can't be a marketplace, but does anyone have a thread to suggest that addresses this?

Note that no one (including me) would be credited--just a post offering information for the curious and the newbies. Also note I did not include the thread about why we don't have a specific FAQ thread, as this seems irrelevant for a new visitor, and I want to eliminate anything that the Mods might find beyond the scope of a sticky FAQ thread.

And, of course, I've no idea how the mods feel. I haven't seen any sign for a while of Mod 6 (under that name at least), for first suggested it. I don't want to do end-runs. Is he still in the Mod business? In fact, I've only seen signs of Mods 11 and 16.

Anyway---consider this the comment period!

Live well,

Tim

Tal and greetings

I am all for  some stickys on here re the lifestyle  it will stop the repeated questions we get weekly.
in the cm chatrooms is our room called  A Gorean Stepstone  its not a roleplay room there is  links there  via keeper the bot who gives information like this
!gor
[07:00] <****Keeper>  What is Gor?
[07:00] <****Keeper>  Gor is basically a fantasy novel series written by John Norman. The story plays on a fictional planet called Gor. John Norman as Professor of Philosophy describes in his tales the basics of natural order. In the very basics that’s what Gor is about: Natural Order, Honour and beauty. Gor is a barbaric world, ruled by steel and concerned with honor, where the institution of human slavery is an accepted and integral part of the Gorean culture.
[07:00] <****Keeper>  The Natural Order says that in mammal life the male is stronger, and therefore the ruler in a more basic world. The females job is to care for the men. As a result of that some Women are Free, others are enslaved.
[07:00] <****Keeper>  Honour is the most precious thing to a man, they rule each other with honour. Men are judged by their actions and staying to a given word. This sense of honour also allows groups of dominant males to interact with each other, accepting the others status and judging them by their actions.
[07:01] <****Keeper>  Beauty is to see not only as in good looking, goreans are able to see beauty in small things, in perfection, in a pleasing girl, in a growing flower or a sunset. Goreans are passionate, emotional, its not bad to be what one is, either Male or female.
[07:01] <****Keeper>  Gor is about honesty as to who you are and why.
07:01] <****Keeper>  Gor exists on Earth, as a daily part of life for those who live by the philosophy and beliefs set forth in the books of Gor. Gor is a State of Mind, a set of beliefs. Gor exists in the head, and in the hearts of Goreans. We choose to follow the teachings and codes, the honor and beliefs in real life.
[07:01] <****Keeper>  To read more, type !basic (please be patient, Keeper will need almost 3 Minutes to post all to you)

!basic
[07:02] <****Keeper>  Basic Gorean Protocols and Philosophies: (please be patient, Keeper will need almost 3 Minutes to post all to you)
[07:02] <****Keeper>  In Gorean mythology it is said that there was once a war between men and women and that the women lost, and that the Priest-Kings, not wishing the women to be killed, made them beautiful, but as the price of this gift decreed that they, and their daughters, to the end of time, would be the slaves of men....~Dancer of Gor, page 352
[07:03] <****Keeper>  1) Gor is a man's dominion. His Home Stone, his place of living, is first and foremost, followed by his Caste/Clan, that which he does for a living. A man takes great pride in both and, if need be, will defend each to his death. He is vibrant, alive, strong, both in will and in the physical sense; strong enough that he is secure to express his emotions, openly. All free men are addressed by a slave or even a man of lower caste as Master.
[07:03] <****Keeper>  2) All woman are weaker and most are submissive to man; the vast majority are free and are respected. A Free Woman is the epitome of propriety and decorum. It is said that the free woman, answering to her family or companion, as to her comings and goings, has less freedom than a slave does.
07:03] <****Keeper>  A free woman walks a fine line within her Home Stone and although a man may deign to allow her to be mouthy and disrespectful to him, he can as well, reduce her as easily to slavery. Not all free women practice or are of a Caste; some have run-away from their homes and families and are vagabonds. All free women are addressed by a slave as Mistress.
[07:03] <****Keeper>  3) Whereas a free man or free woman is always a Master or Mistress, a slave is only a property, that which is owned, and is valued as such. All slaves are taught and expected to be pleasing, to obey, and to be exquisitely beautiful.
[07:03] <****Keeper>  They are subject to expressing such behavior to all free, not just the one whom literally owns them and can be disciplined by any free person. They generally do not speak to a free person unless spoken too and will kneel when in their presence, and, depending upon the situation, will often lower their head to the ground.
[07:04] <****Keeper>  In the books Free women hate them and treat them with much cruelty; it is one of a slave's greatest fears, that she will be sold to a free woman. Some slaves are freed, winning love, or to bear their Master's child. It is, however, said, that only a true slave, begs for her freedom; and that she, then, is never set free.
[07:04] <****Keeper>  4) A woman's station in life, be it freedom in status or freedom within the collar, is never considered a gift given to a man. Although each, free and slave, in their own way, are prized and of great value to men, their station in life, if anything, is the gift of the man to the woman, where he sees her, where he wants her, at his side, or, at his feet.
07:04] <****Keeper>  A Quote on this: "Masculinity and femininity are complementary properties," I told her. “If a man wishes a woman to be more feminine, he must be more masculine. If a woman wishes a man to be more masculine, she must be more feminine." EXPLORERS OF GOR; 13; Page 205 Men celebrate and rejoice in a woman's femininity.
[07:04] <****Keeper>  5) The position of Gor, in many ways, if not the majority, is counter to Earth, both in physical position and metaphysically, with its supernatural beings and profound, albeit simple, theory of natural order. Whereas Earth is on one side of the sun, Gor is on the other. Whereas those of Earth celebrate equality between the sexes, Goreans celebrate natural order, man is, in all things, superior to woman.
[07:04] <****Keeper>  6) The lifestyle of Goreans is barbaric, rich in tradition and beliefs; free of electricity, automobiles, and weaponry is held to lances, bows, and the alike. They love life and living. They value their life, what they do with it, and all things, animal, mineral, or vegetable, living within it.
7:05] <****Keeper>  A Gorean will spend their time enjoying the beauty or pleasure in something, be it a discussion, a song, a poem, a sunset, a flower, or a woman rather than spend all their waking hours working, building their fortunes. To them, the fortune lies in the beauty of life itself.
[07:05] <****Keeper>  7) All strangers, someone unknown to them, is an enemy. It does not take long for a Gorean to discern if the stranger they encounter is to be friend or foe. This is true in the books as well as in the lifestyle. A Quote: The Gorean is suspicious of the stranger, particularly in the vicinity of his native walls. Indeed, in Gorean the same word is used for both stranger and enemy.~ Outlaws of Gor, page 49
[07:05] <****Keeper>  These are the very basics presented within the Gorean series. There are, of course, exceptions. However, the exceptions are few and far between and generally come with a clarifier. The best way to learn about Gor however is to read the books.

Tal
I can understand the desire for not repeating the basics of What is Gor/Gorean Philosphy, etc, but with regard to other (often repetitive) threads, there are those of us who would not only like to have information, but would like to be a participant in discussion.  Also one might want the opinions of people who were not original participants.  Some of those may be gone from CollarMe now, and if one wanted a clarification of some point, the only way to get it would be in a new thread, from one with similar thinking.  Then there may be someone with completely refreshing or novel views or even a humourous response that many will enjoy.  It is also interesting to see how (some) people have modified their opinions, etc. over time, on a similar topic.  The boards are a place where people get to know others in the lifestyle.  How many times has someone suggested reading and posting to the boards as a way of at the very least separating the real from the wankers?  If we only send links, and have no new discussion, the effect is twofold.  First it suggests that we do not want new/more potential friends, and second it suggests that we are hidebound and incapable of modifying our opinions.

Greetings manxcat,

The FAQ's are a way to answer many of the basic questions, so there is at least a foundation of understanding to start a discussion with. By all means get involved and ask questions. If it is about an old thread then I recommend posting a new topic with your thoughts and include a link to the old thread for reference.

Live well,
Orion

Mitzie the thread was started because, no one could agree on the basic facts, there are many things in your chat room thread that I do not agree with myself.

This was a thread for links to discussions in collar me not a staging post for our own personal views.

If you wanted to post your own views you should have started your own thread and linked it here.

Tal Cheryl,

It actually looked like just a contribution from something a Gorean area put together. It did not look like a personal view to me, and I actually liked reading it. You do not agree with it, which is your personal opinion, which you have now posted, but you are chastizing someone else for sharing what you believe their personal opinion to be. Seems pretty hypocritical on the surface.

Orion

P.S. Back to just calling them as I see them, and not worry about the fluff and nicey/nice anymore.

Tal, Mitzie.

Yeah, that file you posted was pretty rough. And in some places a bit wrong-headed, in my opinion. Meaning some of it was off the mark, or could have been stated better.

But as an example of the TYPE of resource one might use, it did the job.

I wish you well,

Thank you for your words I appreciate them.

I didnt post the above keeper one for it to be used exactly as written but as  some sort of a guideline, all to often someone will post what is  Gor ect  so a sticky saying a brief guide to what is Gor  have someone wrie out a post see if most agree with it  then post and lock the topic but with another  sticky saying all replies  post here re the what is Gor   thread sticky.

It would certainly clear up a lot leaving the forum free for more meaningful posts.
