Musicmystery -> RE: FAQ Threads (12/11/2008 3:01:35 PM)

OK, I located the "where to find the books" thread I was seeking, so here's the final version:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For those new to Gor, these threads address Frequently Asked Questions:

For those wishing to learn about Gor
Starting FAQ Thread
Everything you wanted to know about Goreans, but were afraid to ask
The Newcomer

What is beyond the simple definition of "What is this Gor stuff all about?" might interest those with Gor experience/knowledge. You can also find a host of discussions on specific points--in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Click it, and you'll see you can make it specific to the Gorean board, as well as narrow your search to Topics only and in a variety of other ways.

Here is a link to a list of the Gor books
Where can I find the Gor books?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Still have no idea what the mods think or if Mod 6 still mods, but that's what I'd propose.

Thoughts?

Tim

~FR~

Recommendation for an addition "What is this Gorean Honor thing?"

Musicmystery -> RE: FAQ Threads (12/11/2008 3:56:30 PM)

Tal Orion,

I love that thread. I'm assuming you mean along with the "What is beyond the simple definition" thread?

What do the rest of you think?

Live well,

Tim

Musicmystery -> RE: FAQ Threads (12/16/2008 8:01:02 AM)

Seriously, some input here would be great.

Seems we're sort of OK with it as it's probably our best shot at a sticky thread.

Is that the case? And thoughts on Orion's suggestion?

For that matter, thoughts on how to then proceed, since this still needs to pass the mods?

Thanks,

Tim

OrionTheWolf -> RE: FAQ Threads (12/16/2008 8:35:59 AM)

Tal Tim,

I would call it silent agreement at this point.

Live well,
Orion

Tal Tim,

Personally I would say go forward with what you've put together and include Orion's suggestion. Newcomers may or may not utilize it but it would be a better referral than search the archives.

I wish you well,
T

Musicmystery -> RE: FAQ Threads (12/23/2008 5:08:08 PM)

Hi all,

I've incorporated Orion's suggestion (Orion, I'm assuming I've got the correct thread, as it's titled differently than your link), and I've also asked Marcus for permission to link to his Gor FAQs at Silk and Steel (he has quite graciously and enthusiastically agreed). So here's the FINAL "final" version I propose. Thoughts?

Live well,

Tim

What is beyond the simple definition of "What is this Gor stuff all about?" might interest those with Gor experience/knowledge, as might Honor, Code, and your Life. You can, in fact, find a host of discussions on specific points--in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Silk and Steel also has a good "WHAT IS GOR: THE FUNDAMENTAL BASICS" thread.

And welcome to the Gorean forum!

Tal Tim,

Looks good to me. Good luck with working with the powers that be.

FR

This is great! I've just started exploring Gor, due mainly to posts Orion made in the 'Female Supremacy' thread. Prior to that I had many of the same misconceptions and pre-conceptions of Gor, that I am sure many people had or have. So far I've managed to find the first three books and I'm rather liking them. This FAQ will definitely come in handy for me, thanks.

You're welcome, HypnoticShadow. That's exactly what we're hoping with this thread.

Hello All!

Thank you for creating this thread, and I do hope the mods will make it a Sticky.  From the little bit on Gorean philosophy I have read other places, my curiosity has been piqued.  I truly appreciate having quick access to your FAQ threads, and to the complete list of Norman's books.  I was able to download and read the first, and look forward to reading more.

Wishing you well,

juguete

I really hope you are talking a LEGAL e-book you purchased.  Anything else would be against the law, and could have serious consequences.

I wish you well,

ElizabethAnne

Kobane -> RE: FAQ Threads (1/5/2009 5:25:41 PM)

Thanks.

I'm saving it for a quick reference.

And, even worse, it would not be an honorable thing to do.

If one wishes to learn about honor, methinks that not stealing the books that contain that knowledge would be a good place to start.

sujuguete -> RE: FAQ Threads (1/6/2009 5:42:05 PM)

Thank you for your concern, and I agree completely.  I have an aversion to illegally obtained manuscripts (illegally obtained anything, for that matter).

Stephann -> RE: FAQ Threads (1/7/2009 4:44:26 AM)

Hi Tim,

Ditto the astute 'Silent Agreement' comment Orion made.  People yell loudest when their toe's been stepped on.

Hi folks,

Thanks to all who posted.

Just to let you know, I have asked Mod 11 about making this a sticky thread, and she has kindly responded that she will take up the matter with the owners of the site.

Live well,

Tim

Tal all,

Discussions about recreating a sticky Gorean FAQ thread continually restart. Additionally, holidays typically see a spike in the curious wandering to the Gorean board, asking "What IS Gor?" and setting off a new round of discussions.

While none of these are going to fit the bill, they are at least enough of an overview that the newbie can recognize and avoid missteps, and posters who've been around a while may restart the discussion if they will from a point of knowledge, rather than rehashing.

So here are a few past discussions, all with different intents and purposes:

Trevalyan's "For those wishing to learn about Gor"
Stephann's "Starting FAQ Thread!"
Thadius' "Everything you ever wanted to know about Goreans, but were to afraid to ask."
Tim's "The Newcomer"

Moving beyond that "introductory" information is this thread:
Bull's "What is beyond the simple definition of 'What is this Gor stuff all about?'"
...and many other threads address discussions among the Free about deeper looks into Gor.

Why don't we have a Sticky FAQ thread? Here's a discussion:
Karenn's "Volunteering for an Undefined 'Job' on the Forum"
[The original "Editor Nominations Thread" appears to be gone--too bad, because it was a good, open, civil, frank discussion that showed us at our best, and it also clearly delineated the difficulties of creating a sticky FAQ thread.]

Perhaps other folks will post other significant threads I've overlooked.

And for newbies---in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Click it, and you'll see you can make it specific to the Gorean board, as well as narrow your search to Topics only and in a variety of other ways.

Live well, all.

Tim

Thank you for posting these links.  i especially related to the "Newcomer" thread...since that's what i am and i am hoping not to fall into the first category of newbies...lol.

Also, the link for the online purchase of the books....i think that is an awesome link for everyone who visits the forum, although i'm weird in that i like vintage stuff, so i'm waiting on my books from ebay.  i'm a dork like that.  It will make me a newbie longer, which is why i'm going to stick a bit more in lurker mode (if i can....[;)]...) but then i'll have what i consider to be "cool" copies of the books.  Really didn't like the new editions' cover art.[:-]

And....why haven't they stickied this thing????

i mentioned earlier, on another thread, that i was surprised that, having worked in a major bookstore for like 7 years, and having read almost every Edgar Rice Burroughs book, that i had never discovered John Norman's books - just as a matter of happenstance.  Now i know. No books store carries them! [>:]  i just spent hours going to every books store in town, including a decent sized used books store...so, it's wait for ebay for me....sigh.

Oh well, patience is a virtue i need to learn more about anyway...[8|]

Musicmystery -> RE: FAQ Threads (2/4/2009 5:54:43 AM)

Thanks, Stroke.

All--

Since there's a cyclical questioning of the status of slaves, I thought I'd add the "Livestock" thread to our collection.

Thus:

For those new to Gor, these threads address Frequently Asked Questions:

For those wishing to learn about Gor
Starting FAQ Thread
Everything you wanted to know about Goreans, but were afraid to ask
The Newcomer

What is beyond the simple definition of "What is this Gor stuff all about?" might interest those with Gor experience/knowledge, as might Honor, Code, and your Life. You can also find a host of discussions on specific points--in the upper right hand corner is a "search" link. Where can I find the Gor books?

Silk and Steel also has a good "WHAT IS GOR: THE FUNDAMENTAL BASICS" thread

Lots of people have questions about how slaves are considered livestock in the books.
This thread, Livestock, Gor, BDSM, Vanilla, and Reading the Books, discusses that issue.

And welcome to the Gorean forum!

Tim
