Christmas only in recent history became celebrated on Dec. 25th. Christmas was originally celebrated on January 7th, the old Julian Calendar. The last country to accept Christmas on December 25th was Greece( I believe that was in the 1950's). The government forced the Church to change the day. They sent soldiers to the Churches which did not follow the orders and arrested priest.  Leon is correct that Romans had a pagan celebration. As they original Church felt many people were refusing to convert because of not wanting to give up celebrations which were familiar, they changed the celebration. The Church is very understanding of human nature. Hence, a man doesn't have to become circumcised to be a Christian. Also, the Church still celebrates the Epiphany. It is a much larger celebration. Typically, believers do not take down thier tree until after the Epiphany occurs. The Epiphany is when Christ was Baptised, it is not celebrated as when the Magi arrived. It truely is the celebration of all our baptisim, as we were born again. It is a beautiful sacrament.
For those of you who are believers: Christ is Born. Glorify Him
For those of you who are nonbelievers :Christ is Born.

Russian Orthodox still celebrate on the 7th of January.

I know the Serbian Orthodox celebrate still on January 7th and I believe the Romanians also do.

Mitzie, I regret the news regarding your father. I hope your remaining time with him is filled with happiness.

In my house Christmas is celebrated. I am christian as are those in my household. Our celebration includes the spiritual side of Christmas as well as Santa and all the trimmings.

I wish all a Merry Christmas and a joyous season.

That is a great truth!!!!!  I exceeded my sacrificial intentions by double what I had intended.  They just kept demanding more!!!

I had a wonderful Christmas :) I'm in Chicago for the forseeable future until I can get back to AU and marry SFM, and I spent it at my mom's. I saw my brother and grandma too, my dad came over (they're divorced but still friends), and my cousin drove down from Minnesota and we got to compare our engagement rings. Mine's 1/3 carat of lil diamonds arranged, hers is a big bling of 1 carat CZ. I like mine better :)

Also I think this is the first Christmas I had without my family getting into a huge argument, and I really appreciated it. It came close though when Sarah (my cousin) and I got to defend voting McCain/Palin against my hippy mom and socialist dad, but that was all in good fun. Kind of.

Merry Christmas, you all! I hope your holidays were truly blessed!

Don't really celebrate Christmas.  I have family members who do, and I honor their celebrations with the proper greetings and the ritual sacrifices to the Gods of Retail that are customary where I live.

Christmas is actually Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (The Birthday of the Unconquered Sun).  It was celebrated by the Romans on December 25; the first day after the solstice when the sun stayed for a measurably longer time in the sky.  It was celebrated from the time of Aurelian until the time of Theodosius, who made Christianity the official religion of the Empire.

Kind funny how the Christians changed the holiday from the "Birth of the Sun" to the "Birth of the Son" ain't it?  They did that with several holidays.  It allowed people to continue celebrating their traditional festivals while gradually introducing a completely different meaning to them.  Those sneaky Christians, I'll tell 'ya.  Jesus was actually, most likely, born in the Spring.

We humans have been using landmarks on the calendar to observe the passage of time and season for a long time.  The landmarks themselves are kind of arbitrary and change over time.  It's the human desire to observe them that's the constant.

Merry Christmas, Mitzie.

I'm currently reading an excellent book called "The Jesus Mysteries" which compares the story of Christ with a hybrid of similar Gods they term Osiris-Dionysis. I'm not sure if they get into the comparisons with Mithras (Sol Invictus) because I haven't finished, but if you're interested in that sort of thing I do recommend it.

Im a father so hell yeah. I happen to agree with Leonides that he was probably born in the spring. My upbringing into verification of details was quite thorough and even moreso into the religious areas. That said, I don't care as far as I'm concerned we don't have enough national holidays so I'm willing to look over the illegitimate aspects of those we do have.

I'll comment on this one seeing as it is that time of year again

We don't celebrate Christmas.
Rather it is the solstice which receives our attention this time of year since we walk a more or less pagan path in this household.

Seasons greetings to all.

Christmas time again...since my family is in the US and his is out of state (and the states in AU are freaking HUGE) I'll be cooking a Christmas dinner for me, him, and one of his friends who he invited over since he's not doing anything with his family either.

I get to try cooking asparagus. It's intimidating. I hate boiling stuff, it's so hard to tell if it's cooked right, and half a minute too long will ruin the whole thing.

ETA: I'm not Christian, I'm not really anything (I'd say eclectic pagan if I had to pick one) and he's...well he's not Christian, but if he had to pick one he would pick Christian. You know?

Anyway to me Christmas is less about the birth of Christ (or Mithras for that matter) and more about a time to spend together with family, a warm fuzzy time (which is supposed to have snow but I digress, oh I digress) to get together and show your love for your loved ones.

Hello everyone,

My husband has taken to calling Christmas "Feast-mas" (from his explanation, it was a term used in a recent episode of  "How I Met Your Mother".  He told me that he likes the term a lot better than the proper one, so he's going to take to using it).  He sees Christmas as a time to share company, presents and food with family and those you love.

Not since I was young do I personally see Christmas as a religious thing.  Over the years, it has become a time of gatherings of family and loved ones for me.  It is the only time of year that I actually see my biological family, so it's become very precious to me.

Bella, as an aside, do your asparagus in the microwave.  They are absolutely amazing done like this!!.

Wash the asparagus in the sink.  Lop the woody bottoms off them, chop them into your desired lengths, whack them in a microwave safe dish, add a small amount of water to the asparagus in the dish (not too much, otherwise they'll stew rather than nicely tenderise!) cover, then microwave for 2-3 minutes (depending on how crunchy you like them).  Add things like margarine/butter/olive oil/salt/pepper/any other seasonings that you like after cooking, and enjoy :).

I wish you well.

Hmmmm....how to explain...by heritage, I am Jewish, but not by faith.  I guess I would consider myself a polytheistic Deist.  As such, Christmas is not really my holiday...however, with that said, I love the pagentry and music and such (and have a WAY too big collection of Christmas ties).
Almost every society in a moderate clime has developed a holiday in the middle of the coldest, most miserable, dark time of year which involves visiting friends and relatives, and, often, the exchange of gifts, and, yes, I do love both giving and getting gifts.  Working in retail for lo, these past 26 years, I do consider Christmas to be the end of, well, hell, and, as such, see it as a perfectly good day on which to exchange gifts and do the visitation thing.

HOWEVER...with that said...I do have a certain, specific annual activity, as a matter of principle...

I refuse to accept the entire world being closed for a religious holiday, so, every Christmas day, I go out for a meal, and, by Gods, I will find something open and buy something, even if it is only a magazine (and no, 7-11 doesn't count).  This year, I will drag tazzy along to the local Jewish enclave, Squirrel Hill, for deli and wandering, and maybe a movie.  Other years, it has been asian food, however, with her working in an asian restaurant, somehow, that just doesn't seem right.

Just my way.

Hey Xian,

I think I love you for this! I'm new to the whole cooking thing, I'm both looking forward to Christmas and dreading it because I'm going to try to go all out in the kitchen...I've never made a holiday dinner before and even though it's just for two people other than myself it's still incredibly intimidating.

I know how it feels to only see your family on holidays - for me it was Christmas, Thanksgiving, my birthday and my brother's that I'd be sure to see my dad, he wasn't 'out of the picture' or anything but as I grew older and moved out of my mom's house I never really saw him. I'd see her at least once a month, and it's really a great feeling that I know there's going to be a family get together.

Alas, I'm now 10,000 miles away from my family, but I'm hoping in a few years to make the trip back for Christmas with my (soon to be) husband on my arm. Or me on his arm, more likely

I hope you have a great holiday!

I wish you well,
Bella

Hello everyone,

Hihi Bella,

Lol...no worries *grins*.  I've been on the receiving end of quite a few intensive "cooking seminars" and practical "lessons" since I've known the hubby, and I'd be very happy to share what he's taught me with you if you find you need it.

I'd also be interested to hear how your meal turned out.

I hope you have a wonderful christmas as well!

I wish you well.

My grandmother had a good idea to remove some of the commercialism, or at least exploitation of the holidays by businesses.  If you decide to celebrate the christian holidays, simply do so after the calendar date of the holiday.  That way all of the items are on clearance.

I usually don't celebrate Christmas.  It seems to me as a failure as a secular or religious holiday.  In either usage it is a shade of what it should be.  If it is secular, it should be more decadent and if religious, more pious.

Or....

People could be true to themselves, instead of slaves to their surroundings.

I've no patience for the "They've ruined Christmas" crowd. If anyone has found their Christmas lacking, the lack is theirs.

Whatever anyone's tradition/background, it's a recognition that dark returns to light. Literally, hope in a darker time.

Greetings Elisabella,

The good point about Australia is that you do not freeze your bottom of at the beach on Christmas day. And as most of the beaches are white you can still enjoy a good old fashioned Christmas. That is where the family of verity use to go on Boxing day or Christmas day, depending on if we where with the family of verity's father (NSW) or verity's mother (QLD). The states are not that big, you are just use to so many small states.

verity wishes all a great holiday time (whatever you celebrate) and may the time bring many good memories, warm wishes and joy. May you spend the time in joy with those you hold close to your heart.

verity
