Greetings Mistress Mitzie,

This girl hopes that this last Christmas with your father is all you want it to be.

This girl is Christian, as is Master.  girl hand crafts gifts to give to Master and family.  she made chocolates for friends and family, a knitted lap robe for her 95 year old father, and needlepoint tissue box covers (with their names on them) for her grands.

Master's house is decorated using His family things from many past years.

slave's apartment is not decorated except for the Christmas cards she has received from friends on Collarme and from her family.

Greetings all,

Yes I do celebrate Christmas. My mother is Danish so the meal is a bit different. In honor of the Danish side of the family we add the red cabbage cooked with vinegar and sugar to the meal and the traditional dessert of rice pudding with whipped cream and finely chopped almonds served with defrosted frozen strawberries or raspberries. There are also Danish almond cookies to munch on.

Christmas Eve is when we have the meal, with family and friends to help us celebrate. Christmas Day is gifts and moaning about having eaten too much day.

Merry Christmas to all who celebrate!

zeph

Tal All,

I celebrate Christmas, born and raised Baptist. Does it make me part of the machine? Nah, as I get older it's less about presents for me and more about family time. With my parents raising three of my cousins, (Amazing they'd do that so late in life) I look forward to their smiles as the kids open gifts and enjoy the day more than anything. I'll have plenty of pictures to share this year like last.

Mitzie, I wish you the best in the coming days. months, years.

I wish you all well,
Scott

I celebrate Yule. I do Christmas for the lil ones. my offsprings were taught both traditions. Christian and Pagan. When they got older 2 chose to be pagans , one chose to be Catholic. Spend yesterday with Master's Catholic family making puerto rican eggnog, traditional pr. rice pudding and his figgy pudding. i also do the Ephinany as is traditional in my native land. the lil ones put out food and water for the 3 Wise Men's camels in return they leave a gift on january 6th. this way the birth we are celebrating is not forgotten

A yearly reminder to say hello and catch up with family and friends often living far away these days, often with little or no other contact, seems a worthy effort.

Just like Sabbath does for the household.

Couldn't agree more.

Mine's 1/3 carat of lil diamonds arranged, hers is a big bling of 1 carat CZ. I like mine better :)

We use plain gold bands. Due to US influence and heavy work by DeBeers on consolidating a jewelers' monopoly to push for diamond rings, we are starting to see some rings featuring diamonds. Men universally stick to the gold band, though some couples have started using white gold or tungsten instead. I have thought about molybdenum and cubic boron nitride, but I figure that's not going to go over all too well. Go figure. How's Aussie customs on such things?

Ooh... and... can we prod SFM into a conspiracy to introduce Hogswatch to the Aussies?

What actually amazes me about Christmas today is that Christians treat Advent as "the Christmas Season," then pack it up on Dec. 26, or at least Jan. 1 ("the Holidays"). What happened to the Twelve Days of Christmas? That Feast of the Epiphany seems damn important, as this is when the Magi arrive and (at least according to Christians) Jesus is revealed as the Son of God. Wouldn't that seem important, the culmination of the birth of this Prince of Peace?

...

Greetings,

I hope nobody minds my uninvited intrusion, but I saw this part of your post, and would like to add, that while we only celebrate 2 days of actual Christmas in Germany, the Christmas season is still considered to last till January 6th, the festival of the 3 Holy Kings, and generally the trees stay up till that day too, decorations, tree and all other trappings come down on the 7th.

Some interesting (hopefully) asides on this...
The first use of gold bands for men was in World War One, which was the first time that large quantities of men went off to war (rather than warring relatively near their homes), and many wanted a token to remind them of what they had at home to return to.
The diamond solitaire engagement ring goes back somewhat farther...and was originally worn by the man, usually on his left thumb (Henry VIII had one he wore there, as an example).
Oh...and the gold hoop earrings worn by pirates?  Actually, most sailors had them, actually welded in place into the ear.  The purpose was so that, if the sailor were to fall overboard, if the body washed up on a shore somewhere, hopefully whoever found it, would accept that gold hoop earring as payment of sort for a respectable burial.
As to the new, tungsten, titanium and steel rings which some guys think look macho, consider this for a moment...if your hand is injured, and the EMTs have to remove the ring in order to save the finger, or the hand (or even your life, since blood poisoning is a possibility in this case), well, the standard ring cutters that every jeweler and EMT has will not cut that ring off....and if they can't get it off that way, well, guess what?  They will take off the finger.  Once we realized that, many in the jewelry industry refused to sell those rings.  The big chain stores still have them, since they really don't give a flying fuck about the health and well being of their clientele, only their money.

Food for thought.

Actually, the oldest gold band in the family predates WWI, so I'm not certain that's a crosscultural starting point for that tradition.

As for rings, macho has nothing to do with it. An interest in the properties of the materials, and a fondness for their appearance, is the relevant part. With regard to cutting them off, that is not a task for the EMT crews, and is performed in the emergency room with a diamond blade saw, as always. When immediate field care is required, we dispatch airborne ER teams with a lot of equipment, since this is a pretty rural country with state health care. Don't know how it works in the US. Yes, there are occasions where it could be a problem, but those aren't particularly frequent. Might as well say it's safer, as you can block a door that might crush a bare hand with a refractory ring. That's a pretty rare scenario, too. If I'm concerned, I'll have the local EMTs take a shot at a ring.

Cutting back on red meat is probably a bigger factor than your choice of rings in terms of lifetime risks, though.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Greetings (or even Grusse) calamitysandra,

I was thinking this too. I used to live in Munich and I remember vaguely (it was over 20 years ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy) that the children used to come around to the houses dressed as the three kings and I think they gave out candy or something- I can't remember if we gave them candy or they gave us candy, but I think it was the latter. Christmas itself seemed to be a much quieter more religious event than it is here- but perhaps it is different nowadays too. Still have fond memories of the Weihnachtsmarkt in Marienplatz...

Well wishes,
anna

Hello Anna,

the kids who go around clothed as the three kings offer blessings. They write in chalk, or nowadays often give you a sticker for, over your doorjamb. They write 20*C+M+B+09  (the 09 part obvisously changing every year)
It stands not for Caspar, Melchior and Baltasar, as one might guess, but for Christus mansionem benedicat, meaning Christ bless this house. The star is for the star of Betlehem, and the crosses for God, Jesus, and the holy gost. They sing songs and collect money for charity. Many people give candy to the children in addition to the money they offer.

My oldest was a Sternsinger last year. I have a hilarious picture of him in his outfit, the brightly purple cloak clashing horribly with the blue his hair was died in at the time.

I don't know abot the Marienplatz, as I grew up in, and still live near cologne, and we regard Bayern to be hostile teritory, but I love the Weinachtsmarkt on Altermarkt in Cologne.

Hi Aswad! Merry Christmas!

You're right about the titanium...SFM has a titanium wedding ring (after so many hints that he should get a gold one I just gave up. It's his ring, he can get the one he wants) and so I looked it up and yeah, it should be fine so long as we aren't in the middle of nowhere. Which we aren't. http://www.cascadiadesignstudio.com/faq-cut-off-ring.htm

Anyway I know that there's a bit of a backlash against diamonds, mostly because of the huge marketing hype surrounding them that increases the price, but I have a weak spot for gemstones and jewellery in general. In fact one of the parts of the Gor books that sticks in my mind most, above all the others, is the part in Savages where the girl was brought from Earth and right when she was about to be auctioned the auctioneer took the fake pearls she was wearing and crushed them under his foot...there was a great part about how Goreans hated falsehood and they were appalled by the thought of wearing fake gemstones.

That's how I feel...I think CZ is a fine stone for costume jewellery but if you're wearing a CZ to pass it off as a diamond I'll only say it's nice to be polite if I don't feel like getting into a discussion over it. Same with gold-plated jewellery, moissanite-as-fake-diamond, and lab created stones. I admit I've been tempted with the lab created stones but I just can not let myself buy one. I'll take pale sapphires and dark sapphires over a bright blue lab created sapphire.

Anyway that's my ramble for the day. Hope you and Anja had a great holiday season.

I wish you well,
Bella

Hi Zeph,

it is a tradition all over the country, and not really affected by religion either. While it is the catholic church that does the sending out of the children, they do not require the kids to go to communiun or even really belong to the congregation (mine don't).
The children go to every home, and for the most part, they are welcomed in every home, regardless of the religous feelings of the inhabitants.
The children do it to collect money for a good cause, always something childrelated, and the people opening the doors and giving money do it out of a sense of tradition, and because they simply enjoy seeing the dressed up kids and hearing them sing.
If you are religous, the blessing has a deeper meaning too, but even to me, who does not really count herself as a christian, the blessing of innocent children can not be anything else than good, and leaves a positive feeling.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Boys%27_Singing_Procession#Central_Europe

The part about Central Europe in this Wikipedia Artikle has some typical pictures of Sternsinger and the blessing. And yes, even today delegations of the Sternsinger are received by the Bundespresident as shown in the one picture. As do the Bundeskanzlerin and the Ministerpräsidenten of the Bundesländer.

The pictures in the article, while typical are slightly out of date, so here is one that shows you what they do look like today:

http://www.skivent.de/640/2008-01-04%20Sternsinger%20Essen-Frintrop%201.jpg

Oh, and Anna?

It occured to me that you might have mixed the sweets giving up with Sankt Martin.
On november 11th German children treck the streets with lanterns they made, most times in kindergarten or elementary school (often very beautiful and elaborate pieces of art). They congregate in groups and go from house to house. When they ring at your door and you open them, they will sing you one of the traditional Sankt Martins songs, and you pay them in sweets.

http://www.sauerlaender-kleinbahn.de/wp-content/uploads/myfotos/fahrtage/09%20Laternenfahrten.jpg

This is a fairly typical group of children on Sankt Martin.
