ORIGINAL: LotusSong I didn't even visit Canada without knowing the language a bit. ...which one? i mean, there's English and Quebecois obviously. But then there's Michif, Cree, Inuit...........oh the list goes on........ Parisian French didn't work real well for me there :) ..it wouldn't. Quebecois is not really the same as French. One of the things i really like about Canada is the tolerance for language here. Learning the language of ones cultural heritage is not seen as somehow disloyal to the state. i'm from Wales, and there are still some English who are deeply uncomfortable with us having our own language. i see echoes of that dynamic in the US too.....even though, as i understand it, there is no official language in the US. So someone calls beer, cervesa or cwrw......who cares? Learn the language and get over it ...or don't. i find it odd that some people who can be counted on to argue for personal responsibility can also be the ones least likely (not you LS, but others) to take personal responsibility for making themselves understood.
