Is speaking the language of your fathers somehow an insult?

lol... Nice spin.

Care to project what this country would be like if every immigrant in history here insisted on honoring their father with continuing to speak his language and refusing to learn English?

slvemike4u -> RE: May Day March (5/6/2009 8:22:30 PM)

Yeah,but isn't that the King's English?

Who said anything about refusing to learn English?....you have heard of being multi-lingual,sort of like bi-sexual ....emphasis on the oral.

Is the spelling lesson aimed at me? If so thanks,but during my more lucid moments I can usually be counted on to spell c-o-l-o-r.or l-a-b-o-r right.[8|]

..it wouldn't.
Quebecois is not really the same as French. One of the things i really like about Canada is the tolerance for language here. Learning the language of ones cultural heritage is not seen as somehow disloyal to the state. i'm from Wales, and there are still some English who are deeply uncomfortable with us having our own language. i see echoes of that dynamic in the US too.....even though, as i understand it, there is no official language in the US.
So someone calls beer, cervesa or cwrw......who cares? Learn the language and get over it ...or don't. i find it odd that some people who can be counted on to argue for personal responsibility can also be the ones least likely (not you LS, but others) to take personal responsibility for making themselves understood.

Its not discomfort over the Welsh having a language, its discomfort about the language depleting the world supply of vowels, especially the sometimes "y"

Since we're on the subject of missing letters, did you deliberately omit one from your nickname?

No you don't, you speak Canadian.  The English language doesn't contain the word "Aboot", or "Goona.". ;)

I like Canadian better anyway, you have words like "hoser", and have money called "loonies".

Never any offence taken :)
What started as a mild rant on my part is now just me trying to understand what the heck people expect. America has many diversities. It'd be impopssible to learn all the languages spoken here. Why is it just the Spanish speaking sector is so insistant that everything being printed in English has to be printed in Spanish? Mandarin is the most widly spoken language in the world, shouldn't we all be catering to the Mandarin speaking crowd then? All I'm saying is when one goes to another person's turf.. you play by their rules, not your own. Eventually, English will be the officil language

Its a sign at the US's oldest continuing purveyor of ale, McSorley's Ale House. It is an inducement for the uninitiated to purchase the next round.
