rfd1 -> The End of Free Speech? (5/8/2009 11:21:09 AM)

Collarchat.com is a member of the Free Speech Coalition
The author, Paul Craig Roberts, was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Reagan.
He asks some VERY hard questions about FREEDOM of SPEECH.
American ideals support FREE SPEECH. Sadly, today there are forces at work to take that right away. Freedom of speech is NOT about hearing pleasant talk everyone agrees with, it is about hearing ALL VIEWPOINTS: the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The End of Free Speech?

Ask the democrats in Congress about the 'Fairness Doctrine'?? They are trying to silence conservative talk radio....

Sounds like the writer has some serious issues. I hope he gets help for that.

kittinSol -> RE: The End of Free Speech? (5/8/2009 11:30:25 AM)

I'm starting to wonder whether certain people on the right aren't actually getting off on being 'the persecuted minority' (even though they are not). Do you feel it's your turn to stomp your feet?

Termyn8or -> RE: The End of Free Speech? (5/8/2009 12:44:29 PM)

Matters not, it will be gone soon. I don't have free speech, why should you ?

Fora like this will be gone or so limited that it won't matter. We will be reduced to sending and amending emails to one another. This will make it more difficult, but not impossible. The problem will be making initial contact because of the noise floor of spam.

Control, that is the next step in the greed game, and guess where I learned this. Oh wait, I can't tell you.

Geesh, you would think that some people would get a life.

No one has freedom of speech. If they think they do, they are living in another galaxy.

Every right guaranteed to us under the constitution comes with restrictions attatched.

Here, there and everywhere!

Yeah, I was trying to read the article but his obvious bias kept pushing me away.

No one has freedom of speech...

Sure they do. They just have to move it to the Free Speech Zone a few blocks away from the action... [;)]

DomKen -> RE: The End of Free Speech? (5/8/2009 9:12:25 PM)

That essay was one of the most poorly argued arguments I've ever had the misfortune to read. The number of flat out lies was staggering. Freedom of Speech and the Press is not in any trouble and this guys freedom to be a blithering idiot hate monger will only be limited if the lovers of the english language starting killing those who abuse it.

God forbid that should ever happen. We would be mourning misspell59 on very short order.

An interesting exercise in trying to compress a lot of words into very little thought.

Mike, Thanks for putting me straight, they all sound alike to me.

Well,Polite given their lack of ideas and originality....who could blame you for that

SilverMark -> RE: The End of Free Speech? (5/11/2009 6:55:57 AM)

I feel a bit tarnished in reading such anti-semitic crap as the article I just finished.....think I need a shower....

Crush -> RE: The End of Free Speech? (5/11/2009 7:42:54 AM)

Freedom of Speech has been under attack from both sides for a while.  Freedom of Speech doesn't guarantee you "Required Audience" for your speech.  Heck, you can even yell fire in a crowded theater.

Of course, there are consequences to saying what you say.  Slander/libel prosecution..a civil matter, not criminal.   And even criminal, in certain cases.  Think "hate crimes" and "Political Correctness."

In some countries, it is a criminal matter. At least in the US (I know, in Britian YMMMV. )   But in, oh, say China or North Korea, speaking out against the government will get you a grimy cell and 1 square a day.   Good thing that's not the case in the US or a significant portion of those on this board would have been in jail over the last 8 years.  And the others would have started being picked up over the next 4 years...

I personally love having that freedom and having others have it as well.  Sure, it means you have to develop a thick skin sometimes.  But at least I KNOW where some people stand. (And who to stand with and who to stand against, come the Revolution.)   A "speech profiling" so to speak.

Consider how people dress.  You can tell a lot, though yes, some can dress to deceive.  Baggy pants vs khakis and loafers.  Leather or lace or both?

Considering that when you communicate  ~10% is the "text" of your words, ~30% is the tone and over 50% is visual, it is important to try to get ALL the information you can to make a best judgement.

Controlling speech isn't about speech...it is about control.

on a side note:  +2, subrob ;)
