For the record: I am not a Christian. My primary beef against the religion being the concept of Hell. I refuse to believe that God is a hypocritical, sadist, prick. “How dare you not use the free will I have given you to love me and do everything I command? Burn for it!” Also, I’ve never been keen on the idea of believing oneself to have sole possession of the truth. I regard all positions as provisional – or at least, subject to skeptical inquiry. That aside, religion (believing oneself to have sole possession of the truth – often with the flimsiest, if any, evidence) has indeed done terrible damage to human society down through the ages (though to be fair, there have been plenty of secular ideologies that have done tremendous damage as well). But I am a firm believer that one must respect the rights of others if they are to have any basis upon which to assert there own. I think it should also be noted that those who truly do good in the name of religion tend not to make the headlines. Down the street from where I work there live a group of Nuns and a sweeter, humbler, kinder and more compassionate group of women you will never meet. They are the polar opposite of the pushy, judgmental, Evangelicals. The world needs more people like them. My admiration for these women aside, if anyone is interested in other problems with the facts of Christianity, I recommend two books: The Bible Against Itself, by Randel McCraw Helms. It does an excellent job in explaining why the Bible contradicts itself so often. The Making of the Messiah, by Robert Sheaffer. It explains how the Gospels (particularly the Synoptic Gospels) were altered to counter objections to the new religion.
