What should the US or International response be?

"In the nuclear case, we send them a message: Today the Islamic Republic of Iran is running the show," Ahmadinejad said in his speech. "We say to the superpowers, 'Who of you dare to threaten the Iranian nation? Raise your hand!' But they all stand there with their hands behind their backs."

Coincidentally, I believe they have an election coming up. I suppose we can expect several weeks of tiresome posturing.

You know after I posted this link, I thought about the same thing. I just hate the day that we ignore something and write it off as saber rattling, and it isn't.

I don't see why we (The U.S.) should "do" anything.
It's like walking in a big city and you pass a wet-brained drunk on a corner screaming at people who walk by him, you just walk around him.
We have Nuclear Submarines, President Obama should just mention that once in a while in a few of his speeches.
"Oh, and I'd like to recognise Commander Callahan here for his successful tour aboard the U.S.S. JIHAD a NUCLEAR SUBMARINE capable of turning the entire Middle East into a sheet of glass!" "What's that Commander?"
"Oh, "THREE TIMES OVER."

There are mixed reports, but yes I read somewhere that the moderates are gaining more ground. Now if enough of them can stay out of Iranian jails to vote, it may make a difference.

Now you suggest a response.

The last thing we should do is threaten them with war/annihilation/whatever the neo-cons were threatening. The rad-fundies (radical-fundamentalists) would use that as reason to vote in a nut, like their present pres.

That`s pretty much what happened with bush put the "axis of evil" label on them just as moderates were gaining there.

I would have to find it again, but the biggest problem Iran had a few years back, was that the moderates pushed a bit too hard. This caused the Ayatollah to feel threatened, and some of the organizers were jailed for various religious infractions. The crap with Iraq did not help, I agree, and it contributed, but at the time in Iran it was not the leading cause of the moderates loosing ground.

I have an Iranian aquaintence that used to keep me informed and interested in the politics of Iran.

Hi Owner

I don't believe he is anything but a mouthpiece...It will not make any difference who is elected...he will have to be approved by Khamenei so nothing will change.

Orion, how is that "responding" to the Irainians? That's simply a "warning" to *all countries* in the Middle East.
The Irainians or any other country can take it to mean anything they want.
I just don't think it's a good thing for my government to "react" everytime a foreign country sneezes. We need to look out for our own interests and stop worrying about what foreign countries might "think." We are NOT "all in this together" as the cum-bay-ah people would have us think!
I'm waiting for the "Change" that President Obama promised us during the campaign. So far things seem very,........ "Bushy."

Popeye you can stop acting dumb. If we do as you suggest, in response to what the Prez of Iran said, then it is responding.

This may be a little more than a sneeze. I would hope that our foreign intelligence and diplomats would be analyzing this to make sure that it is not a precursor to a puke. If a country sabre rattles enough, when they are actually beginning to draw the sword, everyone will assume it is just another rattle. Sun Tzu knew this.

quote:

Never stated we were. You assume too much into things that are not written. We have interest, troops and access to oil, in the Middle East. Like it or not, those are facts.

quote:

I'm waiting for the "Change" that President Obama promised us during the campaign. So far things seem very,........ "Bushy."

How does this comment relate to the OP, except to bait a bickering match again?

What should the US or International response be?

This, from your link, is what our response should be:

Obama acknowledged Monday that there is "deepening concern" in the global community about Iran's nuclear ambitions. But the White House is pushing Israel, which receives nearly $3 billion in annual military aid from the United States and has its own undeclared nuclear arsenal, to focus on better relations with its Arab neighbors as a way to step up international pressure on Iran.

Obama said Monday that he would wait until after Iran's presidential election next month to directly engage its leaders. Obama said he should know by the end of the year whether talks and international pressure are dissuading Iran's leadership from pursuing nuclear weapons.

Bush pursued a confrontational policy that did not work.  It seems reasonable to give a limited try in the other direction.

I do not disagree. Personally I am in the Popeye camp about foreign intervention, but the problem is that we are already in it, and have too much at stake to just pull out now.
