Tal,

I am a die hard hockey fan. I can come up with way more than grunts and groans when men make some brutal phyiscal contact with one another. lol. I am so hoping I get to make the Pensic wars this summer. But, as an unowned female kajira it would not be safe to go alone so was hoping a Gorean fighting clan might invite me along (hint, wink wink) Nothing sexier than armoured men beating the sh*t out of each other. lol.

Tal Leonidas....

The Tuchux and the Kassar are two groups who fight in the SCA here in the states who fight as "Goreans". The Kassar are actually a lifestyle group who live in one big clan. The Tuchux are more weekend warriors who restrict their "Gorean-ness" to their play acting. I personally stopped fighting when they stopped paying me to do it. Doing it for free wouldn't be my idea of an enjoyable weekend.

I have never heard of the Kassars doing any SCA fighting, at least not as a group. Or, you have some group different than the ones I know of out there on the west coast. I have met the Tuchux and they don't pretend to be Goreans. The only thing Gorean about them is their name and it has been that way for a couple of decades now. Weekend fantasy barbarians is the best description of them.

quote:

There isn't enough of the codes of the Warriors in the books to fight by. Just a few oblique descriptions of them and a few aphorisms is all you'll find in the books. There are lots of different kinds of weapons described in the books, but they wouldn't be a whole lot different from what SCA folks in general use. The Priest-Kings proscribed body armor, so I guess your Gorean play-fighers (if they wanted to be true to the books) would get a whole lot more bruised up than the other guys.

Gorean weapons are all weapons used in the SCA. Many of the fighting tactics as well, tho the phalanx hasn't been tried too many times that I know of. For liability reasons, the SCA does require much more armor than is allowed on Gor. Other than that, you can learn the same weapons and styles there that were used on Gor from the ax to the scimitar. Roman equipment is popular in some areas.

One thing I have learned in over 20 years of armored fighting and a decade plus of rapier is that the weapon style matters much less than the person using it. Remember that Tarl spent weeks and months learning new weapon styles and then kept practicing them after that. That, in addition to being one of the natural fighters, and yes, they do exist, I know at least two in the SCA, is what made him so good.

Be well all....

I concur with the SCA Comments based on the many years I was an active member, I too know members who are natural fighters as i do in metal weapons groups.

Being other, and welcome to reply, I am involved in martial arts (it aint as romantic as the books when you get older...btw) I can give a good account of myself to most my age; having really fought face-to-face for a living before, I can tell you that I am not the man I was a year ago, let alone a decade...
I think that any reasonably apt 21 to 30 year old in excellent condition with a modicum of street smarts (they are not as numerous as one might think) that could stay even with me real-time in a real fight for 15 seconds would have me begging for him to kill me at 16 seconds because of the pain, but he would know he was in the fight of his life for those 15.

But I rather enjoy it..........

LOL,
Ron

Well being a martial artist as well as NHB fighting enthusist myself I hear where you are coming from. Do remember though a couple of old guys [near 40 ] have dominated the UFC as of late. My son who also is around the fight game swears that his instructor who is mid 50 can not only take him but probably anyone..the guy is still fast as hell and benches 300 in regular workouts. I think perhaps you under estimate what you can still do, I think however the real question is the want to..at a certain age you might win but you spend the next week recovering lol..
Those of us who are older and wiser would probably rather spend that week with a delicious girl than changing our bandages.

Thorns is a member of the SCA. He is part of The Black Talon. (got Mercs?) *grinz* He constantly voices His thoughts on getting me suited up in armor and putting me on the shield wall. *chucklez*

I think if i ever did this, i would prefer the one on one combat though. It's a thought.

Happy Friday!

Stand behind the shield wall and do a running leap over then take out those near by whilst the wall charges.... Should work..
