Brule...

However....beating someone who does not take pleasure from it, for your pleasure (rather than as discipline), because giving pain to the unwilling merely for the sake of pain turns you on,which is what sadism is, could indeed make you less Gorean.  Again, it all falls to motive and meaning to one's actions, which define one's self.
I do enjoy flogging someone who enjoys being flogged...I don't enjoy flogging someone who does not enjoy it.  One is "gratification", the other is sadism.  That, however, is my belief structure, it might not be that of someone else.

I like flogging or causing pain to a willing recipient, what does that have to do with being Gorean or not being Gorean?

Just in case you missed it before will make it easier to read. There are many words that we use that  have different meanings then just a dictionary's definition. Slave is not acceptable or even legal  in society, in our lifestyle it is. Slut has a demeaning  connotation, we use it is a compliment to a slave. As this lifestyle is consentual, someone that I enjoy sadistic play with also would be also be consentual. Someone that takes pleasure for being cruel and mean to a unwilling MAY be considered less Gorean, may be considered wrong. Is it wrong for someone that does get pleasure from pain wanting it? Many enjoy it and want it and are afraid to admit it because of societies views of it. If it happens in private and between willing adults what makes it wrong on either side?

What happens if the friendship fails because suddenly people who use to say that person is Gorean (even though they haven't read the books as in the instant discusion or even HAS in some cases) and this person starts being questioned as NOT being Gorean even though as friends they were validated as Gorean before and accepted as their identification, what knowledgeable basis does this person have to validate himself as a Gorean? None -- all of his information is third party. He has no personal knowledge of what the identification actually entails based on his personal interpretation and knowledge. All he has is what he believes himself to be because it sounded cool at the time and his friends were doing it and explained it to him and told him he seems like one.

It's called having double standards.
Something that runs amuck unfortunately, all too often.

Tal and greetings,

Freindships is not what makes a Gorean or not, and a friendship ending is not a reason to say someone is or is not a Gorean. What I see happening from time to time is that a friendship will let some get away with things and forget that everyone is accountable for thier actions. When someone stops being Gorean and lies, makes up things to get pitty from others and stops being what they say they are, then they are no longer Gorean. It is sometimes hard for friends to see past the friendship in these cases.
The sad part is when these people are finely held accountable for thier actions all you hear is how everyone "picking" on them. Others tend to think that these people are being picked on as well because they only see and hear what is read on here and not the true story.
To Me it is a shame that so many people want to judge others for small things like likes and interests but fail to see, alot of times, how someone truely is and acts, they can be so fooled by good words and quotes on here and not know the truth about the real person.

Just My 2 cents

The word sadist has changed over the years to mean something different than originally intended.

A sadist in the Gorean sense is a person who takes pleasure from the pain and fear of their victims. A person who gets their sexual kinks from torturing an unwilling victim.

The majority of people who call themselves sadists today would be horrified if the person they are flogging or beating wasn’t enjoying it because their partner’s pleasure enhances their own pleasure.

They are no more sadists than Gorean Earth slaves are slaves or today’s gay people are "happy", it’s a classic case of a words meaning being changed by the people using it.

Tal Brule.

I feel your pain.  I have known more than one person online, who when they were across the table from me, wasn't worth the fresh water it would take to flush them down the toilet.  There was one fellow in particular who's wife I had talked to on occasion. She was *unhappy* that he seemed to be irresponsible, allowing her to earn the families living while he played games online and off. He could quote the books tho... had a quote for every dilemma. He seemed to know the books forward and backwards. The problem came up tho... when met in person.  The guy was a whining bitch. He whined about how his food was cooked, he whined about how the slaves didn't defer to him properly...he whined about how... *he* didn't plan sufficiently to meet his obligations to the other men who traveled to meet *him*, and could someone please bail him out. To my dismay, the host of the doggle did bail him out....
I spent 13 hours on the road, each way,  from Chicago to Philly, he refused to drive 45 minutes to meet his obligations.

I kinda wish I had made the trip to meet his wife... even if I didn't get to fuck her.

I wish you well

No Brule, you are absolutely correct that Friendships do not define a Gorean but sadly, some learn that the very hard way.
Not by getting down dirty and actually finding out and listening to the truth, seeing the truth right in front of them, That would be the right way. but instead allow friendship to cause a blind eye to be turned to things they fully know are wrong.
IMO, that person gets what they deserve in the long run, for allowing friendship to cloud over what is right and let wrong prevail.
However, if that person can take what has happened and move on, knowing they are much better off, then some good has come of it.

We can only hope that this person will not be doomed to make the same mistakes over and over and over again, because if nothing is learned, then the pain and deciet will just continue.
