Tal Everyone,

Something I wrote recently and have thought to share with everyone. Granted I wrote this while speaking from a position on bettering oneself as a man but this can apply to Free and slave alike. We all have room to improve. Please comment and if you wish do the exercise at the end. The article below is written describing a "Way" those who've read Art of War, Go Rin No Sho, Hagakure, will understand a bit more when I write about Gorean Living as a Way, for it is that. It is a way of life.

Begin
To become a better Gorean man or even simply a better man, one must not only be unconquerable but he must have core values. These are what make you. It is not how smart you are nor how good you debate. Those are tools. Core Values are the surgical hands that guide those tools.

A man without defined core values is a man who does not know any Way at all. There are many Ways a person can walk but this Way, the one of a Gorean man is a test of not only knowledge, skill and desire. It is a smelting of things, when you have begun along the Way you will notice how you change. It is profound and through that test of fire you will be tempered. This tempering cannot begin until you know your core values. Anything less is simply a man like many in today’s society that floats freely, adrift, waiting for the next best thing. A Gorean man is not satisfied with simply waiting his whole life.

Why is defining my core values important?

Defining your core values immediately solves the issue of feeling adrift. By defining what you stand for you give yourself purpose. You would be navigating through life with a sense of wholeness not crumbling to social pressure, circumstances or living a life based on someone else perception of you. A Gorean man does not live his life that way, it is exhausting and will leave you feeling empty, lifeless. A sense of purpose will guide you through life and instead of feeling like you have wasted it you will be happy, wholesome, and pleased with it.

By defining your core values you will be a more confident man. Confidence gives you the tools to do better in your day to day life. Knowing that you made a choice that did not go against the grain of the values you hold dear will make you happier. Actually writing your values down with paper and pen will make them seem more tangible. You should do this as tangible reminders make the best ones.

Your core values is your shield, it protects you from making the bad choices that men who simply wait for something to happen make. Instead you grasp things forthright and do as you wish. Making decisions against your core values is essentially laying down your shield. Always make sure that your core values are clearly defined, if not you will make bad choices that go against your values and that will not only leave you unhappy, but it will leave you with a mess to clean up.

We all prefer to lead a more simple life. This can be obtained by defining your core values. In doing so you provide yourself with the steel backbone you need to stand by your decisions. Your values are an internal compass. Instead of fretting over a decision ask yourself, “Does this decision go along with my values?” If it does then choose the proper option. If it does not, then do not. It really is that simple. Study this and remember it.

How do I define my core values?

This may be no easy task but there is some advice I can give you.
  • Firstly, you must relax. Find a quiet room away from commotion if you can. If not drive to somewhere peaceful.
  • Use pen and paper, do not use a computer. It is far too easy to be distracted.
  • Ask yourself what your core values are and then write them down as they come to you. Don’t pick and choose write down whatever comes to you.
  • Once you have a list of your values, star the ones that are definitely important. Set those aside and then compare two of the remaining values together. Cull the least important and continue pairing them until only five values (Including the ones you starred) remain.
  • Lastly, prioritize them. In doing so you will understand that the most important value will always supersede the lower values. This is imperative if you are in a situation and your values conflict. Ideally they compliment one another but there may always be a rogue situation out there.

You have the tools. You are as unconquerable as an Ubar. Do you have the Values? If you do not then I fear that this Way may not be for you. Define your values and become a better man and I promise one day another shall gladly call you Brother.
End

The exercise is to write down those values and possibly discuss them here. No one's value's are wrong, nor is their order wrong. It is how you choose to live your life. If you wish to alter your Values then re-evaluate all of them until you are without doubt.

I wish you all well,
Scott

Hello Scot

I always thin of my core value as the code I follow.
It is simple for I am simple man it goes as follows:
I will always speak the truth and be courteous to all ( exceptions are those that troll).
I will offer aid to anyone it is uyp to them if they wish to accept if they refuse I must abide by their decision if they accept I wil do all I can to help them.
I think this represents who I am, what I am is something else.
To me they form the foundation of my life.
I wish you well

Coyote
