Leonidas -> Pussy Nation (6/22/2009 5:04:06 PM)

No, not the good kind.

Our duly elected Senators have been holding public hearings (at our expense) into the outrage of crimes aboard cruise ships.  The FBI, it seems, has opened 184 cases of these crimes in in the 5 years between 2002 and 2007.  This is from about 65 million people who took a cruise in the same period of time.  Our Senators were particularly distraught to hear from one of those 184, who apperantly was trapped in a lounge and forced to give a blow job to some Portugese crewman.  I'm not sure what the relevance of him being Portugese is, but the Senators and assembled media were suitably horrified.

Thank God for our wise and learned Senators (John Kerry, Mass & Doris Matsui, CA) though.  They have crafted the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2009, which will require peepholes and security latches on cruise ship doors.  Thank God, too, for concerned citizens like Ken Carver, who is president of International Cruise Victims, a non-profit group whose membership is presumably something less than 184.

I couldn't make this shit up if I tried.  Senate hearings on something that effects an infintessimally small percentage of people.  At all.  I would like to propose the Frightened Little Bitch act of 2009.  It would mandate that people who would like to live their lives without taking any risk at all should lock themselves in their houses and stay the fuck home.  It would further mandate that any lawmaker caught pandering to the media on behalf of a Frightened Little Bitch be locked in with one of them for the remainder of their elected term.

The above is a symptom if the fact that we've built a world that isn't fit for humans.  Our brains are designed to process and react to signs of danger, but in a world where the electronic media makes the irrelavant and distant sound just as important as something that might actually kill us, we're overloaded, and we're wringing our hands over shit that just flat doesn't fucking matter.

To paraphrase the good Dr. Lange, let those who fear to board the cruise ships not board the cruise ships.  By catering to the media stoked fears of the Frightened Little Bitches among us, we are heaping layer upon layer of regulation upon our lives that will ultimately make them not worth living.

Hello Leonidas,

Hmmm, why can't the cruise liners offer up a Frightened little Bitch section?

lol,

Tal Leonidas,

I believe the answer may lie in scrutinizing politicians and what they really want....to look good with minimal risk. That's what this is....good PR opportunitywith minimal risk of anyone saying they're on the wrong side on the issue. This replaces them actually dealing with real problems where they might be criticized by one group or another.

Live well,
T

Hi Leonidas,

I've mentioned before the nanny government and culture in which we now live. I can't agree more, yes we've truly become a "pussy nation" in which every little glitch is analyzed, scrutinized, prioritized and sensationalized. Soon enough I'm sure an organization will be formed for victims of shadows and the ensuing Senate and House subcommittees will be formed and hearings will commence. We've truly become a nation afraid of our own shadows. Pretty fuckin sad isn't it?

Be well

Sounds to me like cruising is considerably safer than driving a car or walking into a convenience store after 10 PM...what an outrage!

Speaking as someone who's been there, done that, got the t-shirt when it comes to having been raped, I'd be the first to say the fellow, Portugese or not, would be on my personal extermination list.  That doens't mean I think he deserves a slot on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted.  I'd also be the first to say what with all the hienous crimes perpetuated in our society, not the least of which is the ever increasing erosion of liberty, it isn't the worst thing that can happen to someone - not by a long shot.  Without all the facts, it sounds to me like a terrible, regretable, bad thing to have happened to someone, but to elevate it to such prominant standing on the Horrors and Atrocities List is a major insult to the many who've endured far worse, with nary a word spoken in their defense by a Senator.

OK, that was crass, crude, and terribly funny.  You make a good point there.  It is a sad state of affairs when individuals are willing to rush into prisons of their own make, forged of their own unreasonable fears, demanding that society free them from those prisons to which only the inmate holds the key.  What isn't so funny is how many of those inmates reside in the good ol' US of A.

That is what happens when people buy the lie that life is safe, that all people are gentle, caring, and have the best interests of others at heart.  It is what happens when we insist on ignoring instincts honed over millenia for the preservation of the species.  It is the result of majoring on minors, and minoring on majors.  We have here the result of refusal to look at the world and its occupants in a manner devoid of rose colored glasses and halucinogens.  This is what happens when individuals abdicate the health and safety of themselves and their loved ones to "society" and "government".  Welcome to the Darwin Awards on a society-sized scope.

News flash - It isn't just "Frightened Little Bitches".  There are more than a few Terrified Little Bastards cross pollinating with them, even as we type.

So. then I can assume that if it was your daughter forced to give oral sex to a crewman on a cruise ship you would just tell her that shit happens and she needs to stop whining?

mnottertail -> RE: Pussy Nation (6/23/2009 5:43:21 PM)

Well, that isn't a Michael Dukakis sorta assumption you should be making rulemylife....

I expect it wouldn't take an act of congress to enact what sort of rule of law would be applied.....

Furthermore, if 185 cases have happened (and there aren't thousands of cruise ships are there?) wouldn't it be about as easy as finding the Weapons of Mass Destruction as the government has in times past?

AlwaysLisa -> RE: Pussy Nation (6/24/2009 6:54:42 AM)

Greetings...

How come when Catholic Priests were caught with their pants down, so to speak, it didn't attract as much attention in high ranking offices as the situation you just described?    When young men started coming forward to profess they had been molested by their local clergyman, it became evident your chance of being sodomized by a priest was greater then your risk of being forced to give head on a cruise ship.    And yet...

Not much was discussed in senate I'm guessing on the matter of priests who couldn't keep it zipped.    Nor did anyone stop attending Sunday mass or recommend the Priest Castration Act of 2009.   Sort of enlightening, it tells me where our priorities lie as a society.

Pretty messed up, in my opinion.

tazzygirl -> RE: Pussy Nation (6/24/2009 7:04:11 AM)

hi Lisa

i think its partly due to the fact that many in office were (are) catholic.  and those who lobby for the religious sides are extremely influential.  no one wants to admit a man of the cloth could do something so heinous, so, of course, the children are liars.

the attacks on cruise ships are an easier issue to take on as a whole.  this one in particular was done by a non american... such an easy target, and no money loss for taking up arms against "him and his kind".

so many in office are sanctimonious assholes.

well wishes

When was the last time you stayed in a hotel/motel room that didn't have these basic protections?

Is it really so much to ask to extend that to cruise ships, which are basically floating hotels?

tazzygirl -> RE: Pussy Nation (6/24/2009 9:23:14 AM)

hi rule

how would that have prevented the "forced" blow job in the lounge?

i have cruised a few times.  yes, the passage ways are often empty, no peep holes in the doors, you are basically on your own.  then again... a cock between my lips... could be quite uncomfortable for a man if i didnt want it there... hmmm.

well wishes

Personally, I think that cruise ships should require the 1 quart zip-lock bags with the 3 oz or smaller bottles of shampoo, etc... I feel so much safer flying on planes now due to this protective measure, and I am very thankful to Homeland Security for enforcing it.

*wipes the coffee off my screen, still chuckling*

Understanding that we are meant to work as complementary teams is often a difficult goal to achieve, what with the antagonistic roles society has forced upon men & women. We are not enemies & the women who make that mistake are coming to a proverbial gunfight armed with a paring knife.

IT wouldn't work...they have not accessed
their "inner pussy" either.[;)][:-].

its too late ...globally we all have created a shit fest/cess pool in certain areas

and in order to climb out we begin bit by bit...honoring each other..earth...gender partnership..(rather than phallocentrism)..

small steps as we are able..without giving up ...without thinking a small step cannot make a difference..

( even if it is reclaiming one word and its dibilitating use)

then in another 4000 years maybe things will be at peace again.

Sybilla -> RE: Pussy Nation (6/24/2009 12:19:55 PM)

From what I've read, this not only involves regulations to prevent sexual attack, but kidnapping and possible murder as well as improving the ability to investigate after the fact.  And because the crimes are committed in international waters which are the jurisdiction of the FBI, Congress is the only place the matter can be dealt with.  I think it's a question of the legal structure rather than an indication of the importance it's been given.

I think it's good.  Better to have Congress' and the FBI's time and energy given to the benefit and protection of those who pay their salaries than spying, obfuscation and underhanded political machinations.

I agree with what you say of the loss of our fight/flight abilities, but I'm not sure we're irreparably damaged by it.  Either way, it's still a good idea to deal with present realities where possible.  Personally, I'm not in the position of needing to weigh my physical safety against my desire to go where I'd like or see what I want to, but many are.  If this helps remove that difficulty for them, I have no complaint.

I couldn't find anything to indicate that these 184 cases were meant to represent the total number of travelers who have been victimized - my guess it's only a sampling of those occurances that make the point most strongly.  And because people probably don't behave any better while at sea than on land, the rate of crime would likely be similar.

I found this here.

Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), the subcommittee chairman, noted that the cruise industry lacks mandatory, standardized procedures to prevent and respond to criminal acts on board ships. Terry Dale, president and CEO of Cruise Lines International Association, stated that mandatory procedures were unnecessary because cruise lines implemented voluntary processes to protect passengers. Among these, Dale noted, were ongoing meetings with federal officials, FBI-approved training materials for crew, and sexual assault training for guest care employees.

To try and codify security standards, Kerry has introduced a bill (S.3204) that would require cruise lines to implement physical security features, such as peep holes, security latches on cabin doors, and CCTV. The bill would require that all ships have crew members aboard who are trained in crime scene investigation. Cruise lines would be required to report all incidents of criminal activity to the Coast Guard, who would then make that information available to the public via the Internet. Under the bill, members of the Coast Guard would be dispatched to cruise ships to ensure that they comply with the law.

*Yawns* Yes yes I have a dick so therefore must be a god with the power to enslave at a thought and change change the ph balance of pussies with a whisper. I really must reign in those powers.

Looking back at human history, it is patriarchy which has allowed us to thrive. But neither Prick nation or pussy nation is good. Balance is always needed. There are some people and situations that talks and hugs won't fix, only worsen. And there are some that can't be bombed into a solution.
