OttersSwim -> Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/1/2009 6:16:30 AM)

So I wanted to bring up the topic of putting sticky topics on each of the forums.  I think this would be a good thing!  How many times do we need to answer the "What makes a good profile." question in each of the Mistress and Master forums..."How do I please my Dom?"...

Sticky topics that automatically come up at the top would help keep this incessant junk down, and would be most helpful to people looking for information easily.

Further, we could do sticky topics on "Not a Fetish Delivery Device", "How to approach a Dom/Domme" etc.

So I am asking the Mods to consider allowing us to have sticky topics.  In most forums, this is done when either enough members in the forum ask for a topic to be stickied, or if a Mod sees a topic of common discussion and makes the executive decision to make it sticky.

Thanks for considering it!  [:)]

VideoAdminAlpha -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/1/2009 12:39:50 PM)

Just out of curiosity, would there be a limit, or would there be like 30 at the top of each column making it hard to see the new topics?  [;)]
Seriously though, there are instructions on how to search the forums, and when I was new here, I used the search feature constantly. Most forums have the feature, so it is not singular to Collarme. If they don't bother to search, they will probably not read the stickies at the top.....just sayin......

Cute! A new mod.

Certainly you could ( and likely should) limit the number of sticky topics per forum.  I would suggest 3-5 to avoid crowding the new topics in the forum on user's screens.  I would think it would be an additional tool to using the search engines - good as they are.  Regular users could point folk to the stickies where good info about repeat subjects was captured and readily available.

I was thinking the same thing.

We might as well go ahead and say hello now.  I have a feeling the new Mod and I will see plenty of each other.

LadyPact......somehow I think we both will. Given that the others are already such big fans.

Psst... I don't think VideoAdminAlpha is new.  Her profile has been active for almost a year and she has 148 posts; though only 8 show up in a search... don't know how that works.

I agree that people who don't bother to search, probably won't bother reading stickies.  I would point out, though, that CollarChat's search function leaves much to be desired.  Whether it's a limitation to the programming or in the database, finding stuff can be difficult at times... even if it's a specific comment where you have exact wording to search on.

DesFIP -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/1/2009 3:47:24 PM)

Move the stickies to a new (closed) forum maybe? Because yeah, we could easily fill the first page of each forum with a page of stickies. Like FAQ, except FA Forum Topics.

Of course then we'd be complaining that the boards are dead!

Edited to post under Ottersswim.  Duh...[;)]

OttersSwim -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/1/2009 9:51:01 PM)

I think that not having to incessantly answer the -overandoverandover- newbie questions might lead to more productive forum topics.  And it would give us a place to collect some of the group wisdom about these newbie issues and questions rather than having it go into the ether and become lost in the search fodder.

Not gonna solve the world, or stop stupid people who refuse to read and understand where they are, but I think it will help those that come and are serious - looking for good information faster than wading through search topics. [;)]

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/1/2009 11:13:49 PM)

I play on way too many forums, have moderated a couple
I have yet to see any number of "Stickies" read enough to really be worth the effort to actually have them
seriously, nobody reads them ever.
The search feature could use some work, but I dont know what sort of system CM is actually running on, whether it is some version of Alexa or something much better ((Which wouldnt be too difficult, but I digress))
Otter, I feel your pain, however there is always the option of simply not posting on the 3-4 threads a month dealing with the same topics. In theory it is polite to answer any question that you know the solution to, but if it is bothering you too much to do so, what is the point?

OttersSwim -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/2/2009 9:08:18 AM)

I thought it would improve things a bit.  We get the same junk coming through not 3-4 times a month but 3-4 times a week.  If we could cut that down even to half, it would be an improvement.

Arpig -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/2/2009 10:37:10 AM)

I fail to see how the newbies posting the same basic questions in any way detracts from the boards, or how getting rid of them would improve the boards. If you don't like reading/responding to those questions don't. You calling these posts "junk" is kind of elitist of you, what you consider junk the people posting probably consider very important. I don't think the old-timers on here have any particular right to the boards, without the newbies the site would stagnate.
So I say if you have a question, post it, that's what a message board is for, after all.

OttersSwim -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/2/2009 11:55:15 AM)

Nope, you misunderstand me.  The newbies that come here with genuine questions might actually be helped by a sticky topic covering facts for getting into the lifestyle, how to write a profile, how to approach a dom/domme, etc.  Those folks might actually read it and benefit.

So you type a really good response to someone new on Tuesday.  By the next week that topic, and what you wrote are buried in a mountain of posts and someone new coming in with a similar question has to wade through the search engine to try to find it.  Having a sticky post eliminates that.

We cannot make everyone read them, but they would help those who were here genuinely seeking.

There are also folks who come here with stupid questions and assumptions - for instance, the Ask a Mistress forum gets at least one a week where the male posting is making the mistaken assumption that a Domme is just a fetish delivery device.  Not all of them are wankers, most just come from the view of porn, or mistaken assumptions about how D/s relationships actually work.  Some might actually read a sticky topic and realize their misunderstanding of the situation and not ask the questions that points to their ignorance.

Sticky topics are a feature of forums for a reason - they work.  Not on everyone, but on those who are really there looking for good information.  We lose so many good posts into the miasma of the search engines.  Why not put the common and well established features of the forum to good use like thousands of other forums have?

Makes no sense to me.  [&:]

My vote.

Why not have a voting system on particular threads as well, and ones which meet a certain criteria get moved over to a "permanent sticky forum"?

SthrnCom4t -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/3/2009 8:14:50 AM)

Actually, I found the sticky notes on the FetLife site to be very helpful and refreshing. However, there is a marked difference between the forums there and the one's here on CM. The boards here tend to digress much more from the main subject and have a sort of 'chat room' feel a lot of the time.

In the beginning, this was very bothersome for me, and yes, I know Otter contributes to that feeling as much as anyone.

So, honestly, I just decided that CM forums are for social entertainment, and if I want to get to any real information without wasting a lot of my time, I either email a question directly to those posters here that I admire or I post it on Fetlife for a more focused response.

Hmmmmm.....(I think you're just checking out the new talent).

FullCircle -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/4/2009 11:25:55 AM)

Good idea but I see a possible flaw…

This would be equivalent to that Microsoft putting drawing pins on your recent files list in Word or Excel. Have you noticed that since they've done this your list of recent files now contains a load of files stuck there and you can't remember why you stuck them there? Similarly some of us work in cubicles at work and we've got loads of irrelevant stuff stuck on our cubicle walls that we can't get out because pulling out these drawing pins would be akin to tearing your finger nails off one by one with a set of pliers?

SassyBird -> RE: Collarme Needs Stickies! (7/4/2009 11:33:56 AM)

Sometimes it just feels better, and more helpful and informative if said "newbie" gets to ask his or her question in their own wording. They get answers personalized for them (which makes them happy), along with the usual comments (use the search function, DUHHHH, this has only been asked 200 times before, etc. which scares them off).

Just think about it, if the regulars don't get to ridicule and flame the "newbies" there might come too much fresh blood and too many new opinions on the forums. The horror.

That said, I'm not a newbie. I just don't post.

I am not a mod[:)]. I just look into the forums now and then. I do not think you would get anything from me unless it concerns other areas such as vid chat.

**Yes I admit to looking at new talent, lol.
