DemonKia -> Burning Man 2010 (9/29/2009 10:28:47 AM)

August 30 to September 6, 2010

Black Rock City, Nevada, USA
(several miles east-ish of Gerlach, NV)

Burning Man

Ticket cost to be announced, but will probably be in the $300 to $400 range.

(Never been? Thinking of going? Please, please, please, browse the Survival Guide, first. Thanx!)

2010's theme is Metropolis: The Life Of Cities . . . .

I know, insanely early, right? But Burning Man is a mad thing to do, & so intense & huge that it requires way extra planning. I start thinking about next year's Burn during this year's Burn, & most definitely the Tuesday after Labor Day my mind has clicked to: next year? & this year, the answer is yes, I'm going to Burning Man 2010 . . . .

What is Burning Man? & why would anybody pay that kinda money to camp on a dry lake bed, in the desert, at nearly 4,000 feet elevation, to participate in what's really as much endurance event as it is a party?

If you've only heard about it, chances are you've heard it's a big booze-&-drug soaked orgy, sprinkled liberally with sand. Well, yeah, that's some of what goes on at the Burn, but it's also a few other things more fundamentally.

It's a free-expression festival.

It's the world's largest art fest, featuring some of the world's largest art. (Also some of the most innovative . . . . )

& it's the world's largest intentional community, for it's mayfly existence.

It is a participatory experience, which can be as minimal as costuming up every day, havin' a 'good attitude', & getting out & doin' stuff. Or it can mean putting together a full-scale theme camp & hosting stuff.

&, really, within the necessary parameters, one's imagination is the limit. Which is really one of the biggest points of Burning Man . . . . . . .

Ahhhh, & why post this on a kink site? Cuz there is all kinds of sexual & BDSM expression going on, individually & in a more organized manner. The contingent of pony people have a parade. Nudity of all kinds. Fetishwear, cross-dressing, & cosplay are de rigeur. There are BDSM camps offering classes & dungeons with socials & play parties & slave auctions. My first classes in lifestyle topics were at Burning Man . . . . .

Hope to see some of you out on the playa . . . . . .

I've always wanted to go, I doubt that I can convince my desert-hating husband to do it.

Yeah, that's a tough one.

It's such an arduous endurance test of an experience I'm reluctant to push people to go . . . . Even those who really really really wanna go may discover it's too much to tolerate -- desert, altitude, minimal infrastructure of civilization, etc etc . .. . .

I'll be there, 3rd year in a row. I'm surprised you didn't get more replies in this thread - judging from the people who go, I would expect about half of them are into BDSM! It's probably the largest "community" out there, other than really broad categories like "artist".

There are tons of "free spankings" camps, workshops, a whole village for poly, tons of D/s lectures, BDSM demonstrations, and so forth.

My girl (at the time) almost got spanked walking down the road one time my first year. A guy offered candy, she ran over, and he produced a paddle and wound up. My "I don't think so" halted the paddle's advance, and I took her away from there. I'm sure he meant it in good fun (or maybe just a little bit of a sleazy attempt to get his rocks off), but still, I'm not about to let anyone beat my girl, even as a joke, without permission.

That's not true. Tickets this year, as they are every year, are on the tier system. You pay what you can afford. They have a certain number of tickets at $210, $240, $270, and $300. I bought at $210 in January. That tier sold out in a day. The next tier sold out in a few more days, and since then, all the $270 tickets have been bought up. All that's left is $300 tickets now. But $300 for a week vacation is pretty incredible. If you already have a tent and some tarps etc, you can go for $600 (about 200 for ticket, 200 for food, and 200 for costumes, art supplies, and beer). $600 that will be the best money you ever spent.
