I admit that I'm upset with myself, because I had to visit a supermarket today twice.
I admit that I'm okay with supermarkets generally, but less so on Fridays and much less so on Saturdays.
All my worst experiences in a supermarket happen on a Saturday.
First time I only went for curry powder, hot Madras curry powder. So I walk into the supermarket with a basket for curry powder. But they've changed the aisles round, so by the time I've trawled round half the store to find curry powder I've somehow managed to also buy lentils, muesli, and a light bulb. There's only mild curry powder, but I want hot Madras curry powder, so I try the 'World Foods' section, and by this time I have also managed to pick up a bottle of washing up liquid, stock cubes, and a packet of ground coffee. But they've changed the 'World Foods' section, and I'm directed to Customer Service.
I ask about hot curry powder, and the woman in customer service says that they're out of stock (on a Saturday?) but they have a new fish seasoning on special offer, which I decline. But on my way to the checkout I've also managed to pick up pears on special offer, oranges on special offer, and kale.
But there are other reasons why I don't like supermarkets on Saturday. People who jump queues. 'Oh is there a queue? I'm so sorry.' (No we're not a queue, we're waiting for the music to start so we can dance the conga all round the meat section).
Why also does it seem on a Saturday I always manage to stand in a queue behind someone with an item needs checking? Why does it always seem to be an item from the bakery section like crumpets which requires three members of staff to check the price and get another item? The bakery section of course is right on the other side of the store. (Here, I'll pay for it. I'll pay you a quid for the crumpets. Here, take two quid.)
And then you get the woman with two friends who just has to pay cash in the right amount. Her total is £29.35 and she can't find her purse in her handbag, and then she's asking her friends if they have 10p or 50p so you end up with three women looking through their handbags and purses and trying to make up the bill..
It's also on a Saturday that I always seem to lose the ability to open the plastic bags at the end of the checkout. I'm there, my items are flying down the checkout, and I have this plastic bag between finger and thumb trying to open it and then as I turn to pay I see an entire queue of people looking at me and so I panic and I'm rubbing the plastic bags between the palms of my hands and I still can't get them open.
And if that wasn't bad enough.. I went a second time because I thought I forgot the curry powder.
